This is a classic Cape Cod summer house with lots of character and charm, including antique furnishings, period architectural details, original Provincetown art, wide-board floors, and an outdoor shower. The owner of Leeward Cottage has added a new well-equipped upscale kitchen, plus two new Kohler-fixtured bathrooms. The house includes four double bedrooms, one with an additional single bed. Situated on a roomy protected lot set back on Bradford Street in the middle East End, with a white picket fence, a Chinese maple tree out front, and perennial gardens all around, this unique historic house is one short block from the Provincetown harbor beach, and within an easy 15-minute walk of the town center.
The updated kitchen has white beadboard cupboards with soapstone countertops, a stainless steel professional-type five-burner gas stove with gas oven and warming drawer, a stainless steel dishwasher, recessed stainless steel refrigerator with ice maker, filtered ice water dispenser, and freezer. There is also a new stainless steel microwave oven. A sound system connects to built-in speakers in the kitchen, dining room and upstairs bathroom.
A 48-inch square dining room table seats four people generously. Add two leaves and you can seat eight. Blue Willow dinnerware and a wide choice of wine, beer and drinking glasses and coffee mugs are provided, with a large kitchen drawer full of every other utensil you are likely to need. In the morning doors open onto either side of the property allowing you to enjoy the sun, songbirds and garden views along with your breakfast. In the evening a gas grill is available on the patio just outside.
After renting this house for four years (1992-96) the lady whose family had owned it since 1901 agreed to sell. It was as quintessential Cape Cod as you could find, and had been very well maintained down through the years but, luckily, not "improved."
Tom Thurston purchased this house in 1996
Many houses in Provincetown sit on small lots and are in noisy areas, particularly when the bars close at 1AM. This house is in the East End, on a nice-sized tree-shaded lot in a quiet residential area that is still within an easy walk or bike ride to and from the town center.
You can see from the photos that this house on the outside looks like it has its entire life. If you know the 1950's song "Old Cape Cod" by Patti Page, and you'd like to spend your vacation in the place she describes, this is the house to rent.
My friends and I had a wonderful stay. The house had plenty of room for five guests, all the amenities of home, and was super quiet, both day and night. We all rented bikes, so getting downtown was never an issue, even during Carnival week. Plus, the owner was incredibly easy and pleasant to work with.
Provincetown is a wonderful place. We loved the free and easy atmosphere and found the locals friendly and helpful with no sign of 'Augustitis '. We rented bikes for 3 days so we could explore easily and also rented a boat from Flyers and did a sunset whale watch. We saw more than 16 individual whales several times including a mother and calf - fantastic! The beaches are beautiful and unspoilt. There are many good restaurants in town and there is much to do and see of historical and artistic interest as well as exploring the coast.
Tom was extremely helpful and the house is wonderful to stay in - great character and charm - the pictures on the site do not do it justice at all!
Overall, we were impressed with the house. The photos didn't really do it justice - the living room/dining/kitchen area was more spacious than we expected. The washer/dryer was a great inclusion when hosting a group this large. We were able to BBQ outside and used the kitchen a lot. The walk to the center of town was about 20 minutes - but a nice walk along the main street, which we were expecting (with the option to cab home late at night if needed). This also meant that the neighbourhood around the house was quiet. 3 minute walk to a small public beach was much appreciated. I would suggest renters complete a thorough and documented walk through of the house with the owner upon arrival so there are no issues with receiving the deposit upon completion of the stay (ultimately had no issues, but took a bit of arguing around minor details that our group wasn't expecting). During our stay, the host was accessible if we needed, but very much left us alone to enjoy our week in Ptown.
A group of 8 Londoners and we had a great stay. The pictures do not at all give the place any justice - it is beautiful. Has EVERYTHING you could ask for in the kitchen - like everything! Location is on the Easy Side bikes recommended but across the street from a pool resort which you can use for a small fee.
Only thing missing for us was an outside table and chairs big enough for our group.
Oh and Tom the owner was very very helpful!
We had a lovely time in this house, The house has been updated but preserves its character as a traditional wooden cape house. The furnishings are simple, but comfortable. The house is spacious, with room for everything. The kitchen is perhaps the best equipped I have ever found in a rental house. The owner and the people who were looking after the house when he was away were helpful and accessible. It is a traditional house, and wants to be treated gently. It is not an ideal place if you want to have large drunken parties - the steep staircases are best taken sober. The location was fine. Despite being on Bradford, there was little traffic noise, and both the beach and the small local market were within 3 minutes walk. We loved it, would happily come again and strongly recommend it.
My group of 8 had a wonderful stay in this charming cottage built in 1804 (?). The owners did a marvelous job preserving many of the charming architectural details while making it pleasurable for the modern guest. The home had a nicely landscaped yard equipped with lawn furniture, reclining chairs, tiki torches, a grill, clothesline and beautiful flowers. Inside we enjoyed the sound system that is wired throughout the bathrooms, kitchen and dining area, along with the steam shower, big bath tub. The home does not have air conditioning, but this was not a problem since the house is well ventilated with large fans. And as everyone familiar with the cape knows, it gets much cooler in the evenings. We had the turn the fans off a few nights. It's a close <5 minute walk to the beach and close to East End art galleries, PAAM and Devon's. The home also has a washer and dryer, which was great for our group. The house is supplied with more than enough towels for the beach and home use. The owners were easily accesible by phone or e-mail for emergencies (we didn't have any), though they weren't in town to check us in and out. Instead we were greeted by a very friendly friend of the owners who happen to own a B&B down the road - truly professionals. They made it very clear that they were available for any suggestions or questions.
The home was a wonderful addition to our group, helping us create fond memories of our summer in PTOWN. I would highly recommend this home for large groups.
