About Roger Jenkins

Retired Professor and Dean

Roger Jenkins purchased this chateau / country house in 1990

Why Roger Jenkins chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

I was born in this small rural community and have been privileged to travel around the world with my work. I have found no place in the world I think is overall more enjoyable and impressive than the mountains, streams, and quiet natural beauty of this community.

Because Penland School has, over the years, spawned so many artists who have relocated to this area, there are literally hundreds of artists located within an hour of the property.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

With the most impressive mountain views from the front porch while sitting in a red rocking chair, you find yourself wrapped in natural beauty on this private, gated, 27 acre farm. Not many places provide the unique opportunity to walk from your bed to a beautiful trout stream on property and land a 18 inch brown trout within minutes, then, In season, you walk a few hundred hards and enjoy blueberries, rasberries, and blackberries.

AMAZING PLACE, BEAUTIFUL VIEW, & PERFECT VACATION!

  • 5 of 5

Our family visited the Red Roof Farmhouse near the end of September and we couldn't have been more delighted in the house, location, property, and owner! The house sits on gorgeous property overlooking a stream and fields, while it also has a fantastic mountain view. It was the most peaceful setting we could imagine, yet there was plenty of outdoor fun to enjoy on the property and nearby in the mountains. The owner, who was extremely kind and helpful, referred us to some great local eating places where we enjoyed some of the best burgers and brick oven pizza we've ever had. The inside of the house was extremely clean and very well kept. There was nothing for us to do except unpack, relax, and enjoy the vacation! The kids had a blast fishing, and the view from the top of Roan Mountain was the most breathtaking one we've ever seen! This was an incredible place, and it made for a perfect family vacation! We appreciate all of the work that was put into making this place so comfortable, as well as the owner's kindness! We highly recommend this rental to others!

Owner's Response: This has been an incredible year in that I've met so many special families, this one most recently. I love to see my guests enjoy all the nearby hiking (within 5 minutes there are two different Appalachian Trial entry points; and the most poplar hike of the entire AT is on top of the Roan Mountain, 25 minutes away) and enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains. Being able to walk from the front door to the stream to catch a nice rainbow or brown for dinner is a special treat!

Absolute Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in several VRBO's and Airbnb's and the Red Roof Farmhouse is absolutely the BEST we've enjoyed. Upon arrival, the house was open, aired and the most delicious goodies were waiting for us. The home itself had two king sized beds which are difficult to find when searching for a rental home. The furnishings are top quality and the owners have thought of everything. The home boasts of plenty! Plenty of towels, baskets of toiletries, extra blankets, pillows and even washer & dryer products. The kitchen has plenty of cleaning products, paper towels, dish towels, dishes, glassware, serving dishes, pots & pans and various appliances including coffee to espresso maker and hot chocolate.

This home is in the perfect location as well. We enjoyed Roan mountain and the Appalachian trail, Roan Mountain State Park and the Soap Shed in Spruce Pine. We wandered the hills and found such interesting and beautiful scenes from the past from rope bridges to old log cabins.

Upon returning one afternoon we arrived back to find fresh apples waiting for us thanks to the gracious hospitality of our hosts.

We've arrived back home here in SC and we're already begun to plan our next trip to Bulladean. On our future itinerary is pottery and glass blowing in Asheville, Little Switzerland and the local community theater playhouse in Burnsville.

Thanks to the Jenkins' for a very special weekend.

Owner's Response: Such a joy to host such wonderful people. And they respected the house and left it beautifully. They not only enjoyed sitting on the porch in the red rocking chairs to enjoy coffee in the morning and mountain views, but they also saw much of what the area had to offer. They didn't make it to Asheville and the Biltmore house, or to Grandfather Mountain or Blowing Rock, but as they said, there's next trip! They've also discovered the area's rich heritage based upon Penland School being close by and all the artists living in the county. Glass Blower and Potters around every bend! Can't wait for the Fultons to return!

Owner's Response: I can never remember a year of nicer guests than this! Simply never met nicer people. These folks enjoyed less travel to see the area, and more time just sitting on the front porch in the red rockers and enjoying the breathtaking mountain views, and listening to the trout stream. Peaceful. Serene. A little slice of heaven.

Amazingly peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

I wish I could give 10 stars! It was a beautiful, peaceful, relaxing home away from home. Everything you could possibly need is there just waiting for you. Nothing better for the soul than a few hours in one of those red rocking chairs on that front porch overlooking God's beautiful creation. My four girlfriends and I left so relaxed and recharged! We will be back! Reserve the Red Roof you will. It be sorry!!!

Owner's Response: For sure, Donna and her friends had the BEST time in those red rockers. I thought they were glued to them! Hard to beat the view and the peace and tranquil views of the mountains at the top, and the pastures with cattle on bottom. Serene. Everyone gets so wrapped up with the red rockers and porch, they forget to talk about the extraordinary well furnished spacious home with everything imaginable available in the kitchen. Happy to have Donna and friends return. A good percentage of my guests are return guests.

Cozy and Enjoyable

  • 5 of 5

We were forced to evacuate our home in Florida due to Hurricane Irma. We couldn't have found a better place to stay to ease our anxiety level. The Red Roof Farm House is perfect for a quiet and relaxing getaway. We enjoyed sitting on the red rocking chairs and listening to the creeks beautiful sound and church bells. The owner Roger Jenkins is very delightful and charming. Him and his wife made us delicious homemade goodies throughout our stay. We loved every bite. The interior of the house had a few cobwebs in certain corners of the bedrooms and one of the shower curtains needs to be replaced but overall, well kept and clean. We also enjoyed that the house is stocked with your everyday essentials. We will definitely be staying here again sometime in the near future. Thank you Roger for being so accommodating. You made our stay very enjoyable!

Owner's Response: I've NEVER had nicer guests, in EVERY way, including leaving the home just as they had found it. I surely do look forward to their return visit in the near future. Pleasure being nice to folks who had to flee their home, city to escape Irma. So so happy they found nothing was damaged when they got home. My cleaning lady prides herself in NEVER leaving a cobweb, so I'm actually delighted to see you found a couple so I can tell her she's human after all and can make mistakes! ha. Shower curtain replaced, albeit I might disagree with the guest on this one!

It was great the house was wonderful and the donuts were absolutely the best

Owner's Response: These guests treated the Farmhouse like they would their own. Left it squeaky, spic and span clean. THANk YOU. What can I say .... the doughnuts were pretty darn good..... hand made from Blackbird Bakery in Bristol, Tennessee! But he didn't mention the GREAT trout fishing .... best trout fishing in many summers because of the rain! He didn't mention the views from the front porch red rockers! He didn't mention that in one hour you can be at the Biltmore House in Asheville, or at Grandfather Mountain, or in Boone or Blowing Rock in one hour! Or that you can be on the Appalachian Trail at two different points in 5 minutes; or at the most frequently traveled portion (and rated highest by hikers of all AT) of the AT at Roan Mountain in 30 minutes! But happy he noticed the GREAT beds! We just came back from a $700 a night rental in Sea Island Georgia where the furnishings for the condo were pitiful compared to mine here at the Red Roof Farmhouse. There was no shampoo, no hair dryer, no kitchen towels, no dishwashing liquid, no soap, no paper towels,.... kitchen furnishings were almost nonexistent........bedding was cheap and awful! Made me appreciate the Red Roof Farmhouse!
