About Roger Jenkins

Retired Professor and Dean

Roger Jenkins purchased this chateau / country house in 1990

Why Roger Jenkins chose Bakersville

I was born in this small rural community and have been privileged to travel around the world with my work. I have found no place in the world I think is overall more enjoyable and impressive than the mountains, streams, and quiet natural beauty of this community.

Because Penland School has, over the years, spawned so many artists who have relocated to this area, there are literally hundreds of artists located within an hour of the property.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

With the most impressive mountain views from the front porch while sitting in a red rocking chair, you find yourself wrapped in natural beauty on this private, gated, 27 acre farm. Not many places provide the unique opportunity to walk from your bed to a beautiful trout stream on property and land a 18 inch brown trout within minutes, then, In season, you walk a few hundred hards and enjoy blueberries, rasberries, and blackberries.

A Spacious House and Excellent Hospitality

  • 5 of 5

The house was clean and spacious. We loved drinking our coffee in the sunroom each morning. The kitchen was well equipped and large enough for all of us to help out. The beds were comfortable and cozy. There were six of us and there was plenty of room to play games, watch tv and all eat together. Roger answered all questions and emails speedily. He was very thoughtful and had chocolates and biscotti as a special treat. We enjoyed our stay and would love to return when we can enjoy being outside on the front porch and put our feet in the creek.

Owner's Response: Sadly I was away, and could not meet/greet my guests. But I'm never happier than my least satisfied guest so I'm happy after reading their remarks. The Sunroom is an extra spacious living room and a great place to play games and have family conversation. But when weather is nice, the ONLY place to have coffee or a glass of wine is on the wrap around porch out front where the mountains reach out to you with their beauty. Look forward to more return guests as over half my guests each year are return ones.

Amazing Girlfriend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

There were 6 of us in this home for a three night stay of Bible Study, board games and fellowship. The home is amazing. Even more beautiful covered in a blanket of white snow! Everything you could possibly imagine you might need is there and waiting for you. The Jenkins family were amazing hosts, so many extra touches to assure our stay was excellent. If you need a beautiful, quiet place to get away from everything look no further you will NOT be disappointed! We will be back!

Owner's Response: So fun to have these repeat guests back. They got to experience the farm in the winter with a blanket of snow and it is truly like a Christmas card. I'm always surprised that more folks don't rent the Farmhouse in the winter months to go skiing at Beech Mountain or Sugar Mountain in Boone .... since it is only an hour away and the price is less than half of what they would pay if they were staying in Boone, and with much better accommodations. Wonderful guests and treated the farmhouse with TLC.

Need a weekend getaway? This is it! Beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. Home has everything you could need. Homemade brownies, flowers and a welcome card. Loved the hospitality! Hoping to return with our grandson to try the fishing. Thank you Dr. Jenkins!

Owner's Response: So sorry I was not able to meet you during your visit, and am so happy to learn you will bring your grandson back to catch some trout later this spring/summer. Trout fishing is BEST in April/May. I also apologize for your late check in on Friday. The couple who were married at the house on Thursday were later leaving the next morning than planned ................ not surprising there, ha!!! We always have about three weddings per year and one of them just happened the day before you arrived.

Amazing Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much Roger and Basia. From the arrival til the end we had an amazing time. Brownies, cake and fruits were delicious - thank you for that, we really enjoyed them. Your house is beautiful!!!. Can't image being anywhere else at that time. The kids really enjoyed being outside and play. We were able to go snow tubing, Gabe tried skiing and did a good job, and also we visited Grandfather mountain. The entire experience was just really, really amazing. You will be in our hearts forever, Gabe has the hand shake pretty much down. He tells everyone that this nice man in the mountain home we stayed showed him how to do it. Thank you again, Our Family!

Cozy, clean and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

My family and I really enjoyed staying here for the Thanksgiving holiday. We were welcomed with a bag of delicious fresh apples upon arrival and surprised on Thanksgiving day with a plate of yummy brownies from the owners! It was an enjoyable experience for us all and you can't beat the views and beautiful church bells everyday either!

Owner's Response: The young husband and wife had two adorable boys, about 5 and 7, and they were excited to have all the space inside the house and outside to play in the creek. They also got to visit Grandfather Mountain, walk the mile high bridge, see the bears, and fun otters there. I must admit, how anyone could spend two days at the Farmhouse and not spend one of them going to Grandfather Mountain, and the other one going to see the Biltmore House in Asheville is hard to understand. Both are NC's top attractions and each only one hour from the house. Everyone comments on hearing the nearby church bells ring out through the valley to make it sound like you're on a college campus. Love them too. Cant want to have these folks return.
