About Roger Jenkins

Retired Professor and Dean

Roger Jenkins purchased this chateau / country house in 1990

Why Roger Jenkins chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

I was born in this small rural community and have been privileged to travel around the world with my work. I have found no place in the world I think is overall more enjoyable and impressive than the mountains, streams, and quiet natural beauty of this community.

Because Penland School has, over the years, spawned so many artists who have relocated to this area, there are literally hundreds of artists located within an hour of the property.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

With the most impressive mountain views from the front porch while sitting in a red rocking chair, you find yourself wrapped in natural beauty on this private, gated, 27 acre farm. Not many places provide the unique opportunity to walk from your bed to a beautiful trout stream on property and land a 18 inch brown trout within minutes, then, In season, you walk a few hundred hards and enjoy blueberries, rasberries, and blackberries.

When I saw the 49 five star reviews and read many of the comments, I decided to rent the house. Count me as the 50th five star review. This house has fantastic views, is very well kept, clean, has plenty of space, and the beds were very comfortable. I would not hesitate to rent this house again.

I am an avid hiker, so having the Appalachian Trail nearby, was an added bonus.

Beautiful Fall

  • 5 of 5

Spectacular views to enjoy any season. But fall is God's beautiful artwork at it's best. Whether it's coffee or wine, the porch is a peaceful place to relax and reflect as you soak in the beauty of your surroundings, all while listening to the soothing sounds of the creek. Meander along the banks of the creek to play or to fish. Fresh trout for a meal is very rewarding. Inside, the home abounds with all the creature comforts. The kitchen has anything you will need to prepare a meal. WiFi is strong. TV has great selection of channels. Bathrooms have plush towels and toiletries. Bed and linens are plush as well. This is not just your run of the mill rental. Time, thought and effort were put into the renovation and amenities. The owners provided us with fresh baked breads from Smoky Mountain Bakers in Roan Mountain and their homemade apple butter and freezer strawberry jam. We HIGHLY recommend this rental and their other rental The Toobie Hole Cottage. Thank you to the Jenkins family for providing some serenity in a such an ever changing and hectic world. And the famous words "We'll be back"

Owner's Response: If every guest were like this very special couple, life would be so pleasant, always! They had their irish coffee each morning in the red rockers with spectacular mountain views and color; and at night had their cocktail doing same. They hardly moved from those rockers! Their friends were good fishermen and cooks, so they caught a bunch of pan sized trout and had them for dinner. Cooks always appreciate how the kitchen is fully equipped.

The house was perfect- the ameneties, the view ( WOW) and the owners (Fresh baked goods delivered)

  • 5 of 5

This house is perfect. The front porch rocking chairs are the ideal place to enjoy your morning coffee looking at the amazing views. The owners have gone the extra mile to make sure that everything, and I mean everything you will need is in this house. While we stayed for my wife's birthday they brought us ( 6 of us) fresh baked goods in the mornings. It was an expected treat to receive and made our mornings. Thank you!

Owner's Response: It was such a wonderful pleasure to host this impressive family of Mom, Dad, twin teenage sons, and five year old son, and three year old daughter. Great fun to see the children in the creek playing, or throwing rocks at the wild turkeys getting them to fly. All the outside yard, field, creek etc, is a wonderful playground for children. This family also walked across the property to the Buladean School Children's playground so the kids could play there as well on the swings, slides, monkey bars, etc. The family really squeezed all the "juice" out of living in the Red Roof Farmhouse and made every moment count. Look forward to their return.

Perfect relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Our time at the Red Roof Farmhouse was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable weeks we've had as a family. Our four small children thoroughly enjoyed all the land to run and play on and especially the trout stream that they explored and splashed in to their heart's content. There's plenty to explore for those who want to go hiking in various surrounding areas, or just a short walk to the local playground for children. With the busyness of living in a suburb, this beautiful home and land is a much needed retreat to check out of the craziness of life and have total relaxation. The scenery reminded me of a painting, you will want to rock on the comfortable rocking chairs all day! The beautiful scenery of the front porch and surrounding areas will forever be on my mind, and we are already looking forward to returning! The house is clean and has plenty of space and is well stocked with anything you may need. The three bedrooms have plenty of space and two of the bedrooms both pass as master suites. The owners are so kind and were attentive if we needed anything and even brought us fresh baked goods. I can't recommend this home enough!! It is literally a small town straight out of a novel!

Owner's Response: What a wonderful family this was. All my family enjoyed interacting with this terrific couple and their four beautiful children. I can't ever remember a guest family enjoying the home and the area more. Within walking distance of the rental home is Buladean School which has a walking track and playground for children. The family used it every day. It was fun watching the kids enjoy the creek and watch father/son soccer games. If every guest were like this family, the world would be a better place because of the confidence you have in what these children will be contributing as adults.

Beautiful views, Comfortable stay, Great hospitality

  • 5 of 5

This was a gem to find in the heart of the mountains. We were so pleased with our stay. Shortly after we arrived, Roger brought us homemade brownies and banana bread for our family to enjoy. The trout stream, beautiful views and comfortable living made our stay memorable. We hope to stay longer next time and my daughter has already asked if we can rent this same house. It was perfect. Loved everything about it. Thanks so much Roger for making us feel at home.
