About Roger Jenkins

Retired Professor and Dean

Roger Jenkins purchased this chateau / country house in 1990

Why Roger Jenkins chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

I was born in this small rural community and have been privileged to travel around the world with my work. I have found no place in the world I think is overall more enjoyable and impressive than the mountains, streams, and quiet natural beauty of this community.

Because Penland School has, over the years, spawned so many artists who have relocated to this area, there are literally hundreds of artists located within an hour of the property.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

With the most impressive mountain views from the front porch while sitting in a red rocking chair, you find yourself wrapped in natural beauty on this private, gated, 27 acre farm. Not many places provide the unique opportunity to walk from your bed to a beautiful trout stream on property and land a 18 inch brown trout within minutes, then, In season, you walk a few hundred hards and enjoy blueberries, rasberries, and blackberries.

Perfect relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Our time at the Red Roof Farmhouse was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable weeks we've had as a family. Our four small children thoroughly enjoyed all the land to run and play on and especially the trout stream that they explored and splashed in to their heart's content. There's plenty to explore for those who want to go hiking in various surrounding areas, or just a short walk to the local playground for children. With the busyness of living in a suburb, this beautiful home and land is a much needed retreat to check out of the craziness of life and have total relaxation. The scenery reminded me of a painting, you will want to rock on the comfortable rocking chairs all day! The beautiful scenery of the front porch and surrounding areas will forever be on my mind, and we are already looking forward to returning! The house is clean and has plenty of space and is well stocked with anything you may need. The three bedrooms have plenty of space and two of the bedrooms both pass as master suites. The owners are so kind and were attentive if we needed anything and even brought us fresh baked goods. I can't recommend this home enough!! It is literally a small town straight out of a novel!

Owner's Response: What a wonderful family this was. All my family enjoyed interacting with this terrific couple and their four beautiful children. I can't ever remember a guest family enjoying the home and the area more. Within walking distance of the rental home is Buladean School which has a walking track and playground for children. The family used it every day. It was fun watching the kids enjoy the creek and watch father/son soccer games. If every guest were like this family, the world would be a better place because of the confidence you have in what these children will be contributing as adults.

Beautiful views, Comfortable stay, Great hospitality

  • 5 of 5

This was a gem to find in the heart of the mountains. We were so pleased with our stay. Shortly after we arrived, Roger brought us homemade brownies and banana bread for our family to enjoy. The trout stream, beautiful views and comfortable living made our stay memorable. We hope to stay longer next time and my daughter has already asked if we can rent this same house. It was perfect. Loved everything about it. Thanks so much Roger for making us feel at home.

Wonderful Weekend Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for my birthday along with my mother in law and two children (4 and 7). Everyone had a wonderful time. The house was beautiful and with more than enough room. My kids absolutely loved the yard, the butterfly bush was a big hit and the stream! My husband even caught a trout that we cooked up for dinner one night. Both of my children along with us said we will make this home our annual retreat for my birthday each year. The owner's are so sweet, even brought us brownies! Definitely recommend this home!!

Owner's Response: This was a very special family. Such a joy to see such extraordinary parenting - what our world needs more of. Red raspberries were ripe so they got to pick them off the bushes in my berry patch nearby. Most folks enjoy the butterfly bushes and also the hummingbird feeders! The stream is ALWAYS where children want to play, and most folks are successful in catching trout. I hope this wonderful family can come back again, and again.

Red Roof Farmhouse

The Farmhouse is situated in a beautiful area looking out at Roan Mountain. The porch and rocking chairs add a wonderful touch for viewing the natural beauty. The house is well appointed with large bedrooms, sitting room and Reading room. The kitchen is well stocked. Highly recommended and we will return. The owners are wonderful and we hope to return soon.

Full of awe and relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Prettier than a postcard. Super equipped. Amazing front porch and views. Nice neighbors. Yummy grill super close by. Found some rasberries, blueberries, blackberries, apples, and peaches on the farm. Sweet picnic by the creek followed by fun playing in the creek. Also found lots of livestock to play with. The owner spoiled us:*) It was a nice getaway that was perfect and much needed for this nursing student!

Owner's Response: So so enjoyed meeting and getting to know this wonderful, young couple. They soaked in their surroundings like it was the last weekend of their lives! We never had nicer guests than this year, EVER! These folks were super lucky because this is the first year I can ever remember when all three berries were available. Usually by the time the second seasonal raspberry ripening is ready, blueberries and blackberries are gone. Not this year! And a small peach tree in back yard was loaded with delicious peaches! Hope these folks will return. There is so much more to do and explore in the area, yet return to that front porch for late evening sipping of wine or early morning coffee to watch the sun come up! Good chance of seeing deer and wild turkey in the field beside the Farmhouse.

Perfect Weekend Stay, Awesome Property/View, Good Location

  • 5 of 5

Our stay included my wife and I, 2 children (5 & 7), and my mother & father in-law. We had a great time and had plenty of room in the Red Roof Farmhouse. The home was well stocked with everything we needed and more. Everything was very clean and neat, and there was careful attention to details. The bedrooms was very nice sized and were somewhat separated to give great privacy and provide quiet spaces if needed. Everyone slept comfortably with no complaints. There are also 2 living/den spaces which were nice so that kids could have a separate space if needed. Kitchen was great for providing meals, but we frequently visited the Mountain Grill which was only a few hundred feet away (you can see it from the front porch), which provided great hamburgers, hotdogs, hamburger steak, salads, chicken fingers, milkshakes, etc. And speaking of the front porch, that was one of my favorite places on the property. We sat in rocking chairs in the evenings and enjoyed the cool breezes, watched hundreds of butterflies, and watched the hummingbirds buzz around the porch - not to mention the pristine views of Roan Mountain directly in front of us. We also saw an occasional deer, woodchuck, or other animal scurry across the field in front. Our next favorite thing was the trout stream - again, directly in front of the farmhouse. We fished for a while (didn't catch any, but did see several trout) and let the children enjoy playing in the cool mountain stream. While we were fishing and playing, we enjoyed picking and eating blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries right beside the stream (we happened to catch the season almost perfect for all 3). We enjoyed staying at the house most of the time, but did venture out for a couple of meals and some gem mining for the kids. There are several neat little towns with all essential stores, restaurants, shops, etc., within about a 30 minute drive. The Owner was very helpful from booking all the way to check-out. They even provided some nice information on nearby restaurants, shops, etc. And, best of all, they provided us with some great homemade brownies for our trip home! I would highly recommend the Red Roof Farmhouse because of the wonderful property, beautiful spacious home, and awesome owners! We will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: These folks were among the nicest we've ever met here on the mountain. They enjoyed every advantage of being here and as they said, they were lucky that all three berries were ripe at the same time - blueberries, blackberries, and red raspberries. The trout stream was low because of summer drought. We planted many types of flowers which attract butterflies and have a large hummingbird feeder up on the front porch which serves as a runway for many hummingbirds. Happy too that they recognized the extra large king bedroom suites and the two separate living room areas. Perfect home for this size family who need lots of space so no one gets in each others way. Look forward to having them back again soon!
