Relax, View Wildlife at Gorgeous, Immaculate Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five - including three children, ages 4-9 - spent an incredible week at Pear Point in July. The house is gorgeous, well-appointed but not too stuffy for children, perfectly clean, excellent location. The house feels tucked away from the world, but it's a quick and easy ride to Friday Harbor.

The house sits maybe 20-30 yards back from the water. (It's not a steep drop-off - gradually rocky as you get near the water - but we didn't let kids near there without an adult.) The view from the property is amazing, with Lopez Island directly across the water, and snow-capped Mt. Baker in the distance. From the decks and two-story windows we spotted a bald eagle or two flying past the house every day, sometimes with dinner in talon! Little black foxes and deer with their fawns would take a path through the yard, and song birds dined on the berries growing by the side of the deck.

The owners thought of everything: fresh herbs growing on the deck, which we used for our grilled fish and salads; lap blankets for chilly mornings on the deck with our coffee; binoculars for watching spotted harbor seals frolic, feed and sun-bathe throughout the day.

The kids loved sleeping, reading and playing in the loft (loft not for toddlers because of steps and railings). The kitchen is updated and has all the basics for cooking; we used the outdoor grill every night for dinner.

Things to do while you're there:

Rent a couple of bikes in town. Take a ride to the local bakery for fresh pastries or a loaf of bread. My husband and nine-year-old did this daily.

Visit Westcott Bay Sea Farms, a very rustic oyster farm not far from Roche Harbor. Grab fresh oysters for your dinner. They go great with the local wine!

Picnic at Lime Kiln Park while watching for orcas and porpoises. Let the kids climb the rocks and explore the tidal pools full of crabs, sea stars, anemones.

Relax, read, hike at South Beach (watch for orcas there too!). Let the kids build driftwood forts.

Take a jog from Pear Point to Jackson Beach and back - 3.5 miles.

Hike the American Camp and British Camp areas; learn about the Pig War that wasn't.

Visit the alpaca farm.

Shop in Friday Harbor for local pottery and books.

On your last day, park your car early for the ferry, and enjoy a giant breakfast at the Hungry Clam before you board.

We would definitely return and rent this house again!

We spent a week at this beautiful home, and everyone loved the private, woodsy location and amenities. The house is very well designed with a central kitchen (fully equipped) and bedrooms off to each side. The sunny living room has breathtaking views of the water. The photos don't do justice to the location...the deck is just a stone's throw from the water, and you can see 180 degrees in either direction. We loved watching the kayakers, ferry boats, sail boats, bald eagles, seals, and dolphins. The hardest decision was just figuring out where to sit and put your feet up! We plan on returning next summer as there's so much to do on the island. And we will certainly stay at this lovely property again.

Very Awesome Experience

  • 5 of 5

We booked this place in advance. We had booked the place for 7 days and wished we booked sooner to book it for a complete 2 weeks.

First of all, this place was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING... When you turned into the driveway it was through the woods, which is absolutely cool. The house is snuggled tightly in the woods and surrounded by water. You have two neighbors. One to the right is the owner's cousin. We met him. He was nothing but nice and helpful. Another neighbor to the left.

The house is large and beautiful and has a lot of great things about it. The deck is great because if you are an outside person it's so nice to sit out there and relax and drink wine.

It was two days before our last day. My wife and I were out on the deck like any night enjoying our wine. All of a sudden I saw a bunch of boats all on top of another near the house. That is a HUGE sign of orcas in the area. When you see a boat from British Canada that says Whale Watching tour it's on. We had Transient whales pass the house. It was absolutely amazing and surprising that they were going in this direction. They ended up in the harbor of Friday Harbor which is rare from what I've heard from the locals.

Overall I will rent this place again if it's available when we return in 2019. I recommend going here. The owners are very nice, and helpful.

Well appointed and comfortable home. Perfect mix of seclusion and tranquility.

Our third visit to Pear Point. So relaxing here...we just love to sit on the deck and enjoy the wildlife, boat traffic, etc. The home is so comfortable we don't want to leave.
