Little Thumb sits on the water's edge on Damariscotta Lake, under pine and oak trees. It is surrounded by water on three sides and looks south down the long part of the lake. The cove to East is a favorite feeding place for heron and bald eagles. Dangle your feet off the private dock, and watch ducks paddle by. Let the loons lull you to sleep.
We offer weekly rentals during the summer. We offer shorter stays in the shoulder seasons. This is a seasonal cabin and is not available during the winter months. Returning guests may be eligible for discounts on stays of a week or more.
The kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms have been totally remodeled. The kitchen has a gas stove, microwave, and center island. The bathroom has a washer and dryer. The living room has a gas fireplace and full views of the lake. There are two bedrooms with blankets, pillows, and quilts provided. Sheets and towels are not included.
The cabin sits on an island which is now attached to the East side of Damariscotta Lake by a causeway. A wetland has grown up beside it. There are only about 10 houses and it feels very private.
Walk or bike along the dirt roads. Kayak or canoe off the dock. Fish in the cove. Or just relax and enjoy the views.
Swimming: We usually can swim right off our dock. But the water off the dock is often too shallow for diving. It is deeper by the swim float. You can swim to the float or paddle there from the dock.
We keep two kayaks at the cottage, two paddles, and two life vests. You may bring your own if you are smaller or larger then average. Please let the life vests drip outside before bringing inside.
If you wish to rent additional kayaks or a canoe I will be happy to give you information about some places that rent and deliver.
There is a sand beach at Damariscotta Lake State Park, 10 minutes from the cottage.
There is a sand beach and ocean swimming at Pemaquid Beach in New Harbor, about a 1/2 hr from the cottage.
Please bring your own bottled water; the cottage uses the lake water. It is fine for washing up, showers, etc. Please use bottled water for drinking and cooking. Poland Spring has convenient 2.5 gallon jugs with spigots that can fit in the refrigerator.
Sheet sizes: We have one queen sized bed and a pair of twins.
I'm a mother of three, two boys and a girl. We've lived in Maine since 1998. My husband and I grew up and went to school in New York state and Massachusetts, in reverse order! After a short stint near the Berkshires we moved to Maine. We love to hike and kayak and explore.
Natalie Norris purchased this cottage in 2008
Well, my kids wanted to be on fresh water, so I started looking at the local lakes. When I first visited this cabin it was less than basic with extension cords for wiring and a handyman web of plumbing. My realtor was very negative. But when we stepped out toward the lake I knew we had a rare gem. Very few houses on the lake can claim to have a southerly view, and here it is!
I'm not afraid of a project and couldn't wait to start. First thing was to get the building level. It had been supported by tree stumps, many of which had rotted away and the floors were as level as six kids hiding under a sheet. After that we squared off the rooms and expanded the kitchen and bathroom. The rest of the renovation was just cosmetic and finding fun things at garage sales and rummage stores.
We enjoy watching and listening to the animals on the lake. We often see osprey, bald eagles, deer, beaver, loons, mallards, fox, turtles, bass, barred owls, red tailed hawks, etc.
And the best thing is that it is so private we feel more isolated than we really are. And we are only a few minutes from a town in either direction.
Beautiful views. Fishing. Kayaking. Islands. Inlets. Afternoon breezes off the lake.

Hi Natalie,
Here is a list of all the critters I saw over the span of our stay. All were observed in very close proximity to the cottage. You have a wildlife oasis there and many of these species have made it their permanent year round home. We cant wait to go back and for longer than a week because it went so fast.

Beautiful fall weekend on the lake! Cottage so cute and spotlessly cleaned. We would love to come back again.
Great location on the lake. Teaming with wildlife. So,quiet. Beautifully remodeled cabin. Very cozy.
Little Thumb is a wonderful property! The location feels private and the lake is beautiful and not at all crowded. Natalie was easy to work with--she responds to questions quickly, and the house is set up such that you likely won't need to contact her during your stay. The house itself is comfortable, very clean, and well maintained. Highly recommended!
Overwhelmed by the location and views. Spectacular renovation done just right with all the expected delightful little touches. Highly recommend to anyone. For any reason . It was simply heaven.
The cabin was everything advertised and more. Absolutely beautiful setting, very clean and close to all the places we wanted to go. Highly recommended and at a great price.
So beautiful and quiet. Even though there were other cabins nearby, because of the topography, you feel like you are secluded. I went with my father who uses a cane and it was very easy for him to navigate. The bathroom is so spacious and a washer dryer!?!? So convenient.
Golf: The closest and smaller golf course is Wawenock Golf Club in Walpole, Maine. It is a 9 hole, links-style course.
The larger golf course is at the Samoset Resort just South of Camden, Maine. It is an 18 hole, championship golf course.
