|Minimum Stay||2 - 7 nights|
Little Thumb sits on the water's edge on Damariscotta Lake, under pine and oak trees. It is surrounded by water on three sides and looks south down the long part of the lake. The cove to East is a favorite feeding place for heron and bald eagles. Dangle your feet off the private dock, and watch ducks paddle by. Let the loons lull you to sleep.
We offer weekly rentals during the summer until mid-September. We also offer monthly and extended seasonal stays. This is a seasonal cabin and is not available during the winter months.
The kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms have been totally remodeled. The kitchen has a gas stove, microwave, and center island. The bathroom has a washer and dryer. The living room has a gas fireplace and full views of the lake. There are two bedrooms with blankets, pillows, and quilts provided. Sheets and towels are not included.
The cabin sits on an island which is now attached to the East side of Damariscotta Lake by a causeway. A wetland has grown up beside it. There are only about 10 houses and it feels very private.
Walk or bike along the dirt roads. Kayak or canoe off the dock. Fish in the cove. Or just relax and enjoy the views.
Swimming: We usually can swim right off our dock. But the water off the dock is often too shallow for diving. It is deeper by the swim float. You can swim to the float or paddle there from the dock.
We keep two kayaks at the cottage, two paddles, and two life vest. You may bring your own if you are smaller or larger then average. Please let the life vests drip outside before bringing inside.
If you wish to rent additional kayaks or a canoe I will be happy to give you information about some places that rent and deliver.
There is a sand beach at Damariscotta Lake State Park, 10 minutes from the cottage.
There is a sand beach and ocean swimming at Pemaquid Beach in New Harbor, about a 1/2 hr from the cottage.
Please bring your own bottled water: The cottage uses the lake water. It is fine for washing up, showers, etc. Please use bottled water for drinking and cooking. Poland Spring has convenient 2.5 gallon jugs with spigots that can fit in the refrigerator.
Sheet sizes: We have one queen sized bed and a pair of twins.
I'm a mother of three, two boys and a girl. We've lived in Maine since 1998. My husband and I grew up and went to school in New York state and Massachusetts, in reverse order! After a short stint near the Berkshires we moved to Maine. We love to hike and kayak and explore.
Well, my kids wanted to be on fresh water, so I started looking at the local lakes. When I first visited this cabin it was less than basic with extension cords for wiring and a handyman web of plumbing. My realtor was very negative. But when we stepped out toward the lake I knew we had a rare gem. Almost no other house on the lake could claim to have a southerly view, and here it was!
I'm not afraid of a project and couldn't wait to start. First thing was to get the building level. It had been supported by tree stumps, many of which had rotted away and the floors were as level as six kids hiding under a sheet. After that we squared off the rooms and expanded the kitchen and bathroom. The rest of the renovation was just cosmetic and finding fun things at garage sales and rummage stores.
We enjoy watching and listening to the animals on the lake. We often see osprey, bald eagles, deer, beaver, loons, mallards, fox, turtles, bass, barred owls, red tailed hawks, etc.
And the best thing is that it is so private we feel more isolated than we really are. And we are only a few minutes from a town in either direction.
Beautiful views. Fishing. Kayaking. Islands. Inlets. Afternoon breezes off the lake.
Green tree frog
Eastern garter snake
Great blue heron
American black duck
Double crested cormorant
Here is a list of all the critters I saw over the span of our stay. All were observed in very close proximity to the cottage. You have a wildlife oasis there and many of these species have made it their permanent year round home. We cant wait to go back and for longer than a week because it went so fast.

Natalie, your cottage was just what we were looking for. It was clean, very comfortable and very quiet. The view of the lake was spectacular! We were even lucky enough to see the Albino Stag and doe 3 times! I couldn't believe it. Thank you for making our stay welcoming, J & J
We stayed in this wonderful cottage during the first week of October. The only regret we have is that we didn't get to stay longer. The house is very comfortable, clean and tastefully decorated. Very nice kitchen with all the stuff one needs. BEAUTIFUL surroundings and during our week 99,99% of the time perfect peace and quiet. And I mean perfect. Spectacular foliage on the trees along the lake, very good crying of the loons. Hunting ospreys, bald eagles and northern harriers. Thoroughly enjoyed kayaking the lake and had some breathtaking close encounters with the loons who didn't seem to mind us being that close. Bought pies from Moody's Diner and introduced them to student life in Boston. Amazed by the giant pumpkins in Damariscotta. Had some brilliant walks on several Damariscotta River Association lands. We simply had a glorious week. Thanks to Natalie and her Little Thumb. Thank you.
This cabin is on Damariscotta Lake, which is just an incredible location for those that love the outdoors. In September, this location is very quiet, although the weather is still warm during the day and evenings are cool - good sleeping weather. There are so many things to see and do depending on what strikes your fancy..we love to kayak and the cabin comes with two great kayaks. Short-term fishing licenses are available and the fishing is great. We spent many, many hours on the lake without seeing any other boats. The view is great and we saw at least one spectacular sunset. Loved hearing the cry of the loons and seeing ospreys and eagles soar during our kayak adventures.
There are several great restaurants with 15-30 miles driving. One can find a farmer's market nearby almost any day of the week. Fun places nearby, like Morse's Sauerkraut and Euro Deli, Oxbow brewery, etc. Recommend the Damariscotta Grill and Moody's Diner (for pie). Primo in Rockland for a special dining experience.
As for the cabin, it is rustic in nature, but has many updated amenities and has a great "cottage" feel with nice, comfortable furniture. Doe snot have the hodgepodge, garage sale feel of many cabins we have stayed at over the years. The kitchen is updated and has plenty of standard items for preparing meals, including an outdoor bbq grill. Has a picnic table for outdoor eating, and a fire pit for socializing outdoors when the sun goes down. The description of the listing is accurate. The property was clean upon arrival and appears to be well-maintained overall, with obvious new upgrades. Natalie, the owner, is quickly responsive, although we had no need to contact her during our stay. We would recommend this property. The only thing we wish this property had was a back door that was a little more secure.
Great, quiet location on the lake.
This is exactly what we were looking for in a lakefront rental cottage.
The cottage is well maintained and clean.
Beautiful views of the lake. Loved hearing and seeing the loons.
Hope to return again next year. This was the perfect place.
Listing is accurate. Good customer service. Already told friends who now want to rent next summer.
The perfect QUIET lake front property with kayaks for morning and evening reverie.
After spending two weeks at Little Thumb, we have nothing but positive feedback to give.
The updated kitchen was great for cooking, the shaded roads were cool for walking,
there was fabulous bird watching,....ruffed grouse, 6 sp of warblers and pair of loons fed their chick 20 yards from the dock.
The dock was enjoyed every evening. The cabin is clean and comfortable, the mattresses were very comfortable, the kayaks were enjoyed especially in calm fog of morning and sunset of evening. And what a view of the milky way on a moonless night from the dock!!!
The lake was perfect for swimming, the tall pines perfect for shelter from the sun,
the privacy at this cabin is unusual. We enjoyed Netflix in evening; WiFi worked fine. Lots of lobster in giant pot on the stove
and grilled meat on her barbecue. Nearby towns and ocean rock hiking. Lots of a super shops, pottery, art and places to sit
and enjoy coffee with wifi in town. Take an evening to see puffins ≈ & whales with Hardy Boat. Extraordinary botanic garden in Booth Bay Harbor. We enjoyed fine food at the GRILLE in Daramiscotta; the book store is a great place to hang out with coffee and drinks attached. We went to all three farmer's markets nearby for fresh vegetables, meat and bread. RISING TIDE COMMUNITY MARKET is excellent for organic foods. Visit WATERSHED CENTER FOR CERAMIC ARTS if you are a lover of clay. Good shower and bath with excellent washer and dryer. Quiet and proximity to water were uppermost in our memories.
Golf: The closest and smaller golf course is Wawenock Golf Club in Walpole, Maine. It is a 9 hole, links-style course.
The larger golf course is at the Samoset Resort just South of Camden, Maine. It is an 18 hole, championship golf course.
