Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, 1 full bath, dock, sleeps 4+

Little Thumb sits on the water's edge on Damariscotta Lake, under pine and oak trees. It is surrounded by water on three sides and looks south down the long part of the lake. The cove to East is a favorite feeding place for heron and bald eagles. Dangle your feet off the private dock, and watch ducks paddle by. Let the loons lull you to sleep.

We offer weekly rentals during the summer until mid-October. We also offer monthly and extended seasonal stays. This is a seasonal cabin and is not available during the winter months.

The kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms have been totally remodeled. The kitchen has a gas stove, microwave, and center island. The bathroom has a washer and dryer. The living room has a gas fireplace and full views of the lake. There are two bedrooms with blankets, pillows, and quilts provided. Sheets and towels are not included.

The cabin sits on an island which is now attached to the East side of Damariscotta Lake by a causeway. A wetland has grown up beside it. There are only about 10 houses and it feels very private.

Walk or bike along the dirt roads. Kayak or canoe off the dock. Fish in the cove. Or just relax and enjoy the views.

Swimming: We usually can swim right off our dock. But the water off the dock is often too shallow for diving. It is deeper by the swim float. You can swim to the float or paddle there from the dock.

We keep two kayaks at the cottage, two paddles, and two life vests. You may bring your own if you are smaller or larger then average. Please let the life vests drip outside before bringing inside.

If you wish to rent additional kayaks or a canoe I will be happy to give you information about some places that rent and deliver.

There is a sand beach at Damariscotta Lake State Park, 10 minutes from the cottage.

There is a sand beach and ocean swimming at Pemaquid Beach in New Harbor, about a 1/2 hr from the cottage.

Please bring your own bottled water; the cottage uses the lake water. It is fine for washing up, showers, etc. Please use bottled water for drinking and cooking. Poland Spring has convenient 2.5 gallon jugs with spigots that can fit in the refrigerator.

Sheet sizes: We have one queen sized bed and a pair of twins.

About Natalie Norris

I'm a mother of three, two boys and a girl. We've lived in Maine since 1998. My husband and I grew up and went to school in New York state and Massachusetts, in reverse order! After a short stint near the Berkshires we moved to Maine. We love to hike and kayak and explore.

Natalie Norris purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Natalie Norris chose Damariscotta Lake

Well, my kids wanted to be on fresh water, so I started looking at the local lakes. When I first visited this cabin it was less than basic with extension cords for wiring and a handyman web of plumbing. My realtor was very negative. But when we stepped out toward the lake I knew we had a rare gem. Almost no other house on the lake could claim to have a southerly view, and here it was!

I'm not afraid of a project and couldn't wait to start. First thing was to get the building level. It had been supported by tree stumps, many of which had rotted away and the floors were as level as six kids hiding under a sheet. After that we squared off the rooms and expanded the kitchen and bathroom. The rest of the renovation was just cosmetic and finding fun things at garage sales and rummage stores.

We enjoy watching and listening to the animals on the lake. We often see osprey, bald eagles, deer, beaver, loons, mallards, fox, turtles, bass, barred owls, red tailed hawks, etc.

And the best thing is that it is so private we feel more isolated than we really are. And we are only a few minutes from a town in either direction.

What makes this cottage unique

Beautiful views. Fishing. Kayaking. Islands. Inlets. Afternoon breezes off the lake.

Hi Natalie,

Here is a list of all the critters I saw over the span of our stay. All were observed in very close proximity to the cottage. You have a wildlife oasis there and many of these species have made it their permanent year round home. We cant wait to go back and for longer than a week because it went so fast.

Notes:
This is one of the original cabins on what was formerly an island on Damariscotta Lake. The cottage 'Little Thumb' was gutted and now boasts a new kitchen, bath, gas fireplace, and expanded bedrooms. Little Thumb juts out from the main part of the island so that the lake wraps around it. It feels private and the views to the south are gorgeous! To the East you will see eagles and heron fishing on the opposite shore. There are plenty of ducks and wild birds to complete this scene of tranquility. Damariscotta lake is excellent for canoe and kayak exploration. 'Little Thumb' has two kayaks and paddles. You can also enjoy fishing and other water sports. Please wear a Personal Flotation Device/ life-vest. Parents need to bring an approved PFD for each child. Because the cottage uses lake water - please bring your own bottled water for drinking and cooking. The water is fine for washing of dishes, showers, and laundry. You will need to bring your own sheets and towels.

So beautiful and quiet. Even though there were other cabins nearby, because of the topography, you feel like you are secluded. I went with my father who uses a cane and it was very easy for him to navigate. The bathroom is so spacious and a washer dryer!?!? So convenient.

A perfectly tranquil vacation

  • 5 of 5

Little Thumb is perfectly appointed on Lake Damariscotta. The cottage is beautifully renovated with stunning views of the lake, a very nice dock for morning coffee, birdwatching, kayaking and there's also a swimming dock. The kitchen is stocked well enough to cook a few meals with fresh meat and produce from local farms. We appreciate the quiet cove on the lake AND the quiet neighbors. Little Thumb is located on the Nobleboro side of the lake--an easy drive to the many sites, restaurants and hikes of mid-coast Maine. Natalie, the owner, made some nice recommendations for restaurants. We stayed for two weeks this summer, and it was a perfectly tranquil vacation in Maine. We look forward to another visit.

Charming, comfortable, very private, quiet, beautifully located, comfortable updated interior.

His is the second year to vacation at this property. It is a unique cabin, surrounded on water

on two sides, bringing continuous pleasant breezes for most days. The dock is right out

the door, and a swimming dock has been added this last year. The large pine trees on

the property adds shade on warm days. There is tremendous privacy here and total

quiet except for the occasional boats going by, mostly kayakers. The house is about

15-20 minute drive to Daramascotta. The region is diverse with numerous things to do,

but my preference is to stay at the property a good part of the time and just be there;

I certainly hope to return!

Beautiful cottage in a lovely setting. Equipped with everything we needed--and nothing more.

  • 5 of 5

The perfect antidote to the overly cluttered rental that has everything you don't need. Beautiful interior adds to the feeling of lovely peace and quiet.
