About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

My wife Jennifer and I chose this spot on Trail River to raise our children because of its incredible beauty. Trail River Gardens is located just 20 min from Seward in the heart of the Chugach mountains on beautiful Trail River. From our deck the river is just 50 feet away with the majestic Mount Madison as a back drop. There are lakes above and below us with mountains on all sides. You can walk to hiking trails to even more mountain lakes. If you like to hike and watch birds and other wildlife, then you will love it here at Trail River gardens.

About The Owner

We have lived in Alaska for 30 yrs here on beautiful Trail River. We also have a gift store, coffee shop and bakery in Seward.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1994

Why The Owner chose Kenai Peninsula

I built the vacation rental because of the beautiful location. The cottage was originally built in the 1940's and I completely rebuilt it in 1997.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is located just 50 feet from the river. the view from the deck is no less than spectacular. There are lakes above and below us with mountains on all sides. There are lots of birds and other wildlife around us and many hiking trails.

Beautiful place to vacation!!

  • 5 of 5

It was a Great vacation, the cottage has everything you need. We enjoyed the beauty of the Trail River and surrounding mountains. Seward is 25 min. away with all kinds of stuff to do. It was our first visit to Alaska and we fell in love with the area. Enjoyed talking to Russ and Jennifer ,gave us some info on things to do in the area. It was a very nice time and we hope to go back.

Nice cabin

  • 3 of 5

Unit is exactly as described. Nice size bedrooms with each having individual bathrooms - great for couples - and we had three couples. They now have washer and dryer. We didn't realize until week before there was no living room or tv (which is our fault for not reading all the reviews). This is a must for us as we like to wind down with family time and movie at night. Owner easy to work with and responds quickly. Only issues we had was Wi-Fi - very spotty and only one user could be on it at one time - which caused problems for us in planning the next day events. So plan ahead if you need reliable Wi-Fi. There is a dining room table that seats six - and this is the main gathering space. This room has two windows and sliding doors - with no curtains on windows - and house next door we didn't feel comfortable relaxing in pajamas in the early morning or late at night. Last issue (which we didn't understand) was they have a sign stating please do not lock exterior doors at any time. You can secure your items in your bedroom - which has a lock. Wasn't comfortable with leaving doors unlocked. If you are looking for a clean, cute place off the grid with separate bedrooms - this is the place for you.

Owner's Response: We live on the edge of one of the most pristine, and beautiful wildernesses on earth. We are no cluttered with cell towers, and out WiFi is weak. If you come to Alaska and your priority is good cell phone reception and fast internet, then you should probably choose to stay in town and look out of your window at a parking lot. The kitchen seating area looks out at beautiful Trail River.and 200 miles of wilderness. The view is spectacular. There is no curtain over the sliding glass door, the window, over the sink, or on the south side looking out at the driveway. Our house is 200 feet away. There are no windows on the north side of our house that allow visibility of the cottage windows. There is a wood shed in the between. This is a wilderness. We live on 3 acres on the river surrounded by trees and high vegetation. There are no neighbors or people who can see in the windows. The cottage is on 1 full acre. There are curtains and black out shades in all of the bedroom windows. The reason we don't lock the outside doors is because guests are always locking themselves out, and come over late and wake us up to let them in. They are always loosing the key. My doors are always unlocked and the keys are in all of my vehicles. I have never lost anything in 30 yrs of living here. We live in a diferent, very safe world than most people. If some people feel unsafe, then I will put a code lock on the front door. You can lock all of the bedroom doors, and they have keys to take with you.

Great visit

  • 4 of 5

We greatly enjoyed our visit to Russ' place. The cabin was very comfortable for our family. We would definitely return for a visit. I noticed a previous post asking for a washer and dryer. Good news, he was in the process of adding a laundry room complete with a washer and dryer. Previous post also stated no stove, that is correct but who wants to spend time there cooking. Grill is all you need and worked great.

Disconnect and enjoy!

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 6 (including children ages 14-5) enjoyed our stay in this cozy cabin on the river. Our oldest two boys each caught small trout in the river behind the house while we were there. A few things to know that we didn't realize until we arrived: Not a full kitchen. Sink and full fridge/freezer, but for cooking there is a countertop toaster oven and a plug-in hot plate. It made cooking for our fam of 6 a little trickier than we anticipated but we made some adjustments to our menu and made it work. We had rain a lot during our stay otherwise we would have probably used the outdoor grill for cooking. Also, there is no TV, and we didn't get any cell reception or internet inside the house. We could walk outside to the yard and then connect to the wi-fi, but we never received

A signal from indoors. Again, we adjusted to being disconnected and enjoyed playing board games and visiting rather than being electronically entertained. Russ and Jennifer were so kind and hospitable. Russ was gracious enough to filet some of our salmon that we caught! They have also just installed a washer/dryer for the house and we were able to use that during our stay which was a lifesaver for our family. We drove into Seward each day for fishing, shopping, the park, etc and it was an easy 20-25 minute drive each way and we always saw moose and eagles along the way. We enjoyed our vacation and our stay here.

Great family cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the Scenic Alaska River Cottage! It was the perfect place to stay with our family of 6 while exploring the Kenai Peninsula. Each couple having their own bathroom in their room was wonderful too. Russ and Jen were so nice and their property is beautiful!
