Charming one-bedroom suites with pool on the grounds at the Chateau des Sablons.

12 Reviews
Bedrooms 1
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 4 nights

Photos and Description of this Bourgueil holiday apartment

1 bedroom with king-sized bed, 1 bath, Sleeps 2

Château des Sablons is a beautiful 18th century château with a white stone facade. It is ideally situated on the edge of the medieval market town Bourgueil which is amidst some the greatest castles in the heart of the Loire-valley.

The Vineyard Suites are charming one-bedroom suites located in the Château des Sablons' coach house.

Guests in the Vineyard Suites are able to enjoy the swimming pool and grounds of the château. The grounds are designed to provide an enclave of peace and quiet and guests are encouraged to use the various tables and chairs in the park seating areas for coffee, drinks and meals. The château makes a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing or even in place of a day of sightseeing.

Sightseeing By Foot: You can choose to visit the area by foot, bicycle, train, or auto.

The Château des Sablons is only a 15 minute stroll from the center of Bourgueil. The town is well endowed with shops, including three butcher shops, five bakeries, three café-bars, five restaurants, a wonderful patisserie and a good newsagent’s shop for newspapers, etc. In addition there are two supermarkets, one in town that stays open Sunday morning and one just on the outskirts, the huge HyperU Supermarket.

The town is prosperous and enjoyable, and a center of wine production. The A.O.C. of Bourgueil is present on every wine list of any size in France and visiting the neighboring wineries (you’ll pass vines on the way into town) is one of our guest’s favorite activities.

Sightseeing By Bicycle: The Loire Valley in the part of France which is the most bicycle-friendly. A separate bike path has just been constructed beween the center of Bourgueil and the Loire. This kind of construction is becoming more common in the area. (A several hundred kilometer bike path runs along the south bank levee of the Loire.)

There are plenty of guides for visiting the region by bicycle, but the immediate area has three bike circuits of about 40 km that provides visitors with a unique visit to the area. One focuses on the vineyards and wine-producing areas, another on the old ports on the Loire, and another takes you up into the hills and along the Chaungeon to see the mills, etc.

You can also combine bicycle tours with the train to extend your range. Almost all local trains from the Port Boulet station 3.5 km from the château carry bicycles. This allows you to ride to Saumur on the bike and then take the train home, for instance.

Sightseeing By Auto: The Château has a very convenient location, being only 3.5 km from an exit from the A85 motorway. This allows you immediate access to the motorway and speeds you to some of the further distance châteaus such as Amboise (less than an hour), Chenonceau (45 minutes), Langeais (15 minutes), Villandry (20 minutes), Chinon (15 minutes), Saumur (25 minutes), Montosreau (15 minutes), Angers, Azay le Rideau….

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a lovely, relaxing stay in the Vineyard suite, and enjoyed your hospitality. We also enjoyed our refreshing swim in your pool. We will certainly recommend Chateau des Sablons to our friends that are coming later in the year. All the best. Cheers!

Not the 'quiet and calm' we were promised

  • 2 of 5

I think it is important that if you plan on staying here to realize you will not be staying in the Chateau- the pictures on site I believe are a bit misleading. There is not a picture of the building that you will stay at. With that said the bed was very comfortable and bathroom clean- it is not air conditioned so not a problem if you are only planning on staying in your room after the sun goes down. As for the kitchen I did not appreciate finding a very old/used scrub pad and what appeared to be a jar of old bacon grease in the cupboard.. The ownder did leave coffee and cream and a small bottle of local wine- otherwise not really anything in the kitchen so if you plan on cooking bring everything that you will need.

My wife's and my largest disappointment was this was heavily referred to as a place of 'peace and calm'- the first night we remained awake with the traffic on the busy adjacent road, dogs barking and teens/drunks? walking by and waking us until 2-3 in the morning. Dogs live on the ground and do bark frequently. Additionally the owners are very present- if you like that kind of thing you will be happy- it made me not comfortable to enjoy the pool or the grounds. In fact the first night we arrived was later ~ 8pm and we were looking forward to relaxing/swimming in the pool only to have the owner inform us that he was going to 'take a swim' in the pool after showing us our room.

Lastly, the village is not overly aesthetic or pleasing and limited food choices especially on Sundays/Mondays-virutally everything is closed down. It does have a GREAT market on Tuesdays and a smaller one on the weekend- and the townspeople then were lovely. Do highly recommend the snail pizza at La Trattoria and a meal at Lo Muelin Blu- we unfortunately did not get to eat there as reservations were not recommended but DO make reservations- it smelt wonderful and was filled with Backroads tour which we have used many times so it must be an exceptional dining experience!

Owner's Response: What a silly review. These guests seemed to have the idea when they arrived that they could be nude on the grounds of the Chateau and in the pool. Such is not the case. We have no idea where they got that idea, but they seemed unhappy when we told them it was not allowed. Apparently they decided to express their disappointment about not indulging their nudist tendencies led to this thoroughly unfounded review. To appear surprised that towns in France are often closed on Sunday and Monday is a revealing tip. Though our own does have a bustling Hyper U gigantic supermarket that is open all day Monday and a small grocery that is open on Sunday morning! As for the kitchen in the Vineyard Suite. It is equipped with two frying pans, several sauce pans, and baking dishes, as well as a four burner stove top, full oven, microwave, refrigerator, etc. Plus all the dishes, glassware, and cutler you could need. Most of our guests have no problem cooking and enjoying the fruits of the Loire Valley. We could go on, but...

Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Chateau Sablon. Jean Pierre was a gracious host and provided us a lot of good information about the area, restaurants and sights. The apartment was very clean and quiet. The large bed was exceptional for Europe and comfortable. The chateau has an interesting history and the entire grounds are very beautiful. The wi-fi worked very well. Most important, my wife fell in love with Charlie, the chateau's mascot.

Owner's Response: The Chateau's Mascot is Charley, or Charlemagne, a happy Bernese Mountain Dog. Forty kilos of love as we say, who welcomes guests and does his best to keep them happy. He gladly accepts petting from all guests.

Lovely historic property, comfortable room.

  • 5 of 5

I had a lovely stay for 2 months from September to November. The property is charming and quiet and private. It is just outside the village which is an easy walk or bicycle ride to the bakery, stores and cafes. The room had a very comfortable bed and kitchen and bathroom/ shower. The owners were very helpful and solicitous of my needs and comfort. I had no needs unmet. I enjoyed sitting outside in the lovely fall months but a little late to enjoy swimming in the beautiful pool. Perfect place to enjoy bicycling the Loire Valley Velo routes. Bicycle rental in town was very reasonable and great bicycles and service- beat shipping and transporting my own by plane/train. I loved every minute and wouldn't hesitate to recommend or come again.

My husband and I spent 4 nights at the Chateau and celebrated my birthday with our hosts. We appreciated the king size bed which was imported from the U.S., the beautiful surroundings, and the exceptional hospitality of our hosts. The accommodation is clean, comfortable, and convenient. The nearby village is quaint with nice dining options. I found reading on the beautiful grounds very relaxing. Highly recommended.

La Vie de Chateau

  • 5 of 5

The chateau has a lot of character and is a peaceful place to stay to explore the region. Our suite in the coach house was pleasant and well-appointed. The king-size bed was very comfortable. The kitchen was brand new, spacious, perfect for cooking up the delicious local products we got from the market in Bourgueil. Best of all was the warmth and kindness of our hosts, George and Jean-Pierre. They could not have been kinder, more gracious, and more welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent visiting with them and making their acquaintance during our stay. As we were touring by bicycle and our luggage was being transferred by a professional service, they made special accommodations to facilitate our special needs. They know the town and the region and made excellent recommendations regarding sights, restaurants, bike routes, and wineries. We recommend the Chateau des Sablons.

"A Place of Calm" - yes, exactly as advertised! After spending a few glorious (but cold and busy) days in Paris, including running the Half-Marathon, it was a pleasure to unwind at this beautiful gem. We were warmly greeted by George and Jean Pierre, but we must confess we most appreciated the friendly welcome by Charlemagne (Charlie), their beautiful bi-lingual Bernese mountain dog! (We missed our dogs at home!) The owners' hospitality, recommendations, and attention to detail (both in their gorgeous chateau and the guest accommodations) were much appreciated. Thank you for the wine and flowers, and milk in the fridge! Our vineyard suite looked exactly as pictured and was extremely clean, comfortable, and well-designed. Perfect location for chateau-hopping (we visited 8 in 3 days at a

leisurely pace). We were lucky to arrive on a Monday, so we stocked up at the fantastic Tuesday outdoor market in Bourgueil, and enjoyed cooking several meals in our apartment. Don't miss the Cafe Metry (patisserie/ salon de the) for their outstanding pains au chocolat and coffees. We also very much enjoyed dinners at La Rose de Pindar and La Trattoria (excellent crepes - but cash only unless you have a credit card with la puce). Everyone was very friendly. The village center is a 15 minute pleasant walk. Yes, we were there during the off-season, weather was chilly and not much was in bloom, but that was offset by the lack of crowds and the solitude - merci George, Jean Pierre, and Charlie, for sharing your place of calm. We hope to rent from Historic Rentals again, perhaps one of your lovely Paris apartments. A la prochaine!
