About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Get away from it all at this charming Lake Erie retreat located 25 miles West of Erie, PA and 7 miles East of Conneaut, OH. Nestled on five private wooded acres with 365 feet of private beach, the cottage offers a fun-filled and relaxing get-a-way for any type of vacationer.

This 3 bedroom home is available year round. The property is bordered by Lake Erie to the North, Raccoon Creek to the East and to the South and West, the largest tract of undeveloped land on the South Shore of Lake Erie, the Pennsylvania State Gamelands/David M Roderick Wildlife Reserve. The new Lake Erie Bluff's park is also very near by.

Historical property built around 1909 as the Superintendent's house for the Elmwood Home for Boys. The cottage was renovated in 1999. The first floor has a spacious modern kitchen stocked with all equipment to prepare any meal - a foodies delight. The living room has a stone, wood burning fireplace to make any night feel cozy. A very large deck on the back is the perfect place to relax, listen to the waves, see the boats go by and watch the hummingbirds dart around the feeder. If the weather turns, the enclosed front porch allows you to take in the beauty.

The second floor has 3 bedrooms. One Queen and 2 Double Beds. The bathroom was also gutted and fully renovated in 1999. Garden style tub.

About Rick Swanson

Taken at Raccoon Creek park located next door to the cottage. The cottage is a magical spot to create wonderful memories.

Rick Swanson purchased this house in 2008

Why Rick Swanson chose East Springfield

The land has been owned by the family since the Mid 50's. After the Elmwood School for Boys closed, there were two other owners of the surrounding property. I believe one used it to harvest timber, the other gutted what was remaining of the Elmwood home and had the buildings torn down. In the mid 50's, my grandfather, James Evans of Girard, and partners purchased 200 acres including what is now Raccoon park. The cottage was rented to Micheal Obrien, a good tenant whom they sold the cottage to. He raised his family there and lived there until sold back to the family in 1987 when he died. In 1965 the partners sold the acreage of what is now Raccoon Park and kept four 2.5 acre plots west of Raccoon Creek along the lake. Two of those 2.5 acre lots is what the cottage sits on. It is our piece of paradise all year round and a big piece of our heart and family history.

What makes this house unique

Hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, fires on the beach, watching incredible sunsets, visiting nearby wineries, spending quality time with family.

A charming, old, wonderfully isolated cottage

  • 5 of 5

The "Boonies" cottage on Lake Erie is great. We had visited a few years ago and enjoyed it so much, we decided to have a return visit. The owner, Rick, is very responsive and accommodating. The house has everything, which is great because it really is in the middle of nowhere (and that's a good thing!). My wife appreciated some peace and quiet in the sun room with the screened windows open and the kids and I got some good use out of the rope hammock between the two giant walnut trees.

While you're out here, make sure you head west on US-20 a few miles and visit the White Turkey drive-in and go a little further then turn onto Broad Street and check out the Breakwall BBQ restaurant right on the lake in Conneaut. We made our obligatory visit to Peggy Gray's Candy about five minutes east on Old Lake Road.

The one complaint I got from the family was that our trip was too short. We'll just have to come back out again soon.

Wonderful location for quiet week, nice modern house, felt like home plus could watch the lake.

  • 5 of 5

We spent time just resting, reading etc. The location is on a quiet road, very easy to take walks etc. There is TV, but may wish to take DVDs etc. The bath is very nice, bedrooms are pleasant, deck is very nice with view of lake. The kitchen was very nice too. Keurig available with Mr. Coffee too. Lots of room with island and nice refrigerator, well lit. We played games on the dining table. We enjoyed eating in and cooking our own meals. Well equipped (only missing rubber spatulas.) :-)

Erie, PA is 20 miles or so - not far and they have anything you want there for shopping, movies, dinning etc. Try the Heavenly Ice Cream place in Ashtabula, OH, just a few miles west of the house and the open air root beer stand at the edge of town.

There is access to Lake Erie at the back of the property, but steep path down to it. A short walk to the east is a very nice park with new shelter house and bathrooms, lots for the kids to play on and very easy access to the beach. There is plenty of kindling washed up for a fire. We had one started on one match with drift wood a plenty in any size up to a whole tree. Wonderful sun set view from there. There is parking too. It is a public township park, but not crowded at all and folks are great. Plenty of room on the grounds and the shore.
