About The Owner

Frank and Bridget Fico at Bald Knob, overlooking the southern end of Canaan Valley.

The Owner purchased this house in 2009

Why The Owner chose Davis

We have been coming to Canaan Valley for over 30 years, primarily to enjoy the myriad cross-country skiing options available here. We have had our girls skiing with us since they were too big to carry along in the backpack. When we found this property, we knew it was in a perfect location to ski right from our house without having to make a long uphill climb or cross private land, using a network of trails that connect to Canaan Loop Road. We hope other cross-country skiers will appreciate and take advantage of the location.

What makes this house unique

The location also affords great opportunities for mountain biking: Canaan Loop Road is a gravel/dirt road that offers easy access to Blackwater Falls State Park through the National Forest with minimal car traffic, and there are numerous side trails that offer more advanced single-track opportunities. The house is situated on an oversize lot, with extra buffer between the nearest neighbors. And our location at the top of the development means ample peace and quiet for just lounging out on the decks and enjoying the wooded surroundings.

A beautiful, comfortable place to take a break.

This is a wonderful home at the top of the mountain. We loved our stay. Great decks and chairs to sit on in the peace and quiet of West Virginia. Hiking right out the front door!

Great girls weekend

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time, two moms and 4 girls. We hiked everyday and slept very well at night. What a beautiful part of the country. Hopefully, we will be back one day. Would love to spend some winter time there. Thanks for sharing your house.

Beautiful Cabin High on a Hillside

  • 5 of 5

Fazenda is extremely well-designed and well-maintained. It is high on a hill--it's easy to believe that four-wheel drive is crucial in winter, and one of us with old tires had a little trouble making it up the last stretch to get there in the summer--and feels wonderfully quiet. It is designed to make a lot of air and light available, although the windows can be closed and the blinds lowered when desired. The decks overlook nothing but trees--although there are other cabins not far away, we were never aware of anyone else except when we were driving to and from the cabin.

The kitchen was very well-equipped (lots of pots, pans, serving dishes, serving implements, a blender, etc.) and easy to use, which was important because we were counting mainly on eating in. The bedspreads etc. were in good condition, and there were many extras stored in closets and drawers (extra blankets, pillows, etc.). There are cushions provided for the outdoor chairs, a nice plus.

The location is a short drive from the Canaan Valley wildlife refuge HQ, from the Canaan Valley resort and park, from the Blackwater Falls resort and park, and from the Dolly Sods wilderness area, so there are many different kinds of hikes easily accessible within a 10-12 miles radius.

A note that might be useful: The eagle's nest at the top is lovely for the young and nimble--2 teenage girls were crazy about it--but the staircase would not be friendly for the older and stockier. The room also doesn't really have a door--it's a space on a separate floor with a connecting spiral staircase. The other bedrooms are all conventional rooms with doors and an easy flight of stairs up or down from the entry.

The owners were very gracious especially about helping us navigate some water problems (involving the water supply on the hillside, not problems specific to the cabin). All in all, we had a great time during a two-week stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comprehensive comments--we're sure they will be helpful to future guests. And we certainly appreciate your understanding with the water issue: owners were notified only a few days in advance that work was to be scheduled, and the planned outage of several hours became extended when they ran into an unexpected problem.

Quiet and solitude

  • 5 of 5

This home is lovely and spacious and the location is superb-on top of the mountain with access to the forest right across the drive. Our few days there were peaceful. Blackwater Falls was worth the 20 minute drive and the trek up and down the steps. If you enjoy hiking or just sitting on the deck enjoying the forest that surround you, this is the home for you.
