2 Bedroom Beach House Near Rural Fishing Village & Great Surf

Bedrooms 2
Space 500 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6-8)

If your idea of a great vacation is to travel half way around the world to find another Starbuck's, then this is not for you. If, on the other hand, you long to be at the edge of an authentic Nicaraguan fishing village, surf incredible waves by yourself or walk along a beach that Moon Handbook's Travel Guide describes as "relatively deserted, undeveloped and absolutely beautiful. This is a beach like no other.", then this is for you.

This two bedroom beach house, finished in 2010, is ideal for families or groups. The master bedroom has AC and its own entry from the beach. The open living/ kitchen area is flexible and can adapt to your needs. Internet is available at the house with the use of a dongle. This retreat provides the perfect balance between private beach and an active village, with its dirt roads, thatched huts and an old lifestyle that is rapidly disappearing on the coast. There are no stores like you would find in the U.S. but you can find a lot of things you need from its Ventas, the small stores out of private homes, located 3 minutes walk away.

If you get tired of surfing the great waves right off your front porch, turn left at the beach to the turtle reserve with its undisturbed beachfront. Or you can turn right, watch the fisherman launch their pongas (fishing boats) and continue on to the village. Another option is to go to the Padre Ramos Wetlands Reserve, 1 to 5 day kayak tours with an ornithologist are available. This estuary is a "decidedly mellower place to swim than the ocean and is home to all the wildlife-especially birds-you could hope to see", as quoted by Moon's Travel Guide. Or you can lay in the hammock and watch the pelicans fly by.

Surfboards, surfing instruction, surfing and fishing tours, horses and about anything else you want can also be provided by Nicaragua Escapes. You can check their website for more information. They can meet you at the airport and provide transportation to the house and many other services.

You can easily walk to town and the caretaker can help you find your way around town. It's a ten minute walk down the beach to Monty's Surf Camp for a great meal and drinks. Beyond them is a fun place called Rancho Tranquilo, a vegetarian restaurant and bar. Close by Rancho Esperanza offers inexpensive meals and coffee. These are English speaking venues, there are also numerous Spanish speaking venues nearby including a new restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner about 4 minutes walk down the beach. The fresh fish dinner for $7.50 is not to be missed.

If you are a couple or a small family, I would like to recommend my son and daughter in laws house next door (VRBO # 272064). For groups of eight to twelve, rent both.

About Sue & Peter Portugal ( dauter in law &son )

Our mother died in 2015 at the age of 101. This was her beach house. It is now being run by her kids, Pam, Nancy, and Peter and his wife Sue. Our mother loved being here, sitting out on the front porch with a drink in hand, watching the ocean. She last visited at the age of 97.

Her grandson, Bodhi, and his wife, Sarita, own Nicaragua Escapes, a tourist service, renting horses, surfboards, fishing tours, and overseeing these houses, in northern Nicaragua. This has been a family adventure with 4 generations involved. We are happy to be able to share the beauty of this place with others through our beach house. We hope you find the same kind of contentment we find while there.

Sue & Peter Portugal ( dauter in law &son ) purchased this house in 2007

Why Sue & Peter Portugal ( dauter in law &son ) chose Jiquilillo

Our mother chose to buy this property and have the house built because it's beautiful, sunny, tranquil and near family.

What makes this house unique

Relaxing, relaxing, relaxing. My family, the beach, pelicans, ocean, sun, food. What more can I say?

Great place right on the beach!

  • 5 of 5

As the ad says, it's Nica style so nothing fancy but everything you need to relax on the beach. We had very few bugs and the house stayed comfortable with the fans and breeze off the ocean. Surfing right out front and the hosts offered board rental. The caretaker lives next door and was extremely helpful anytime we needed anything, he speaks only Spanish but can call the English speaking host if needed. We brought in groceries from Chinandega, but there are also little comidors (small, basic restaurants) and small family run stores in town that had treats (like coconut bread!) and basics for the things we forgot or ended up needing.

Fantastic and family friendly

Had a great vacation with my daughter and friends with their children at the 2 beach houses. Jiquilillo is beautiful and you couldn't ask for a better spot to be at the beach, especially easy with small children. Highly recommended.

This house was exactly what we were looking for! Very clean, comfortable house on a beautiful beach. Jiqulillo is a very rural town where almost no one speaks English which we loved because it was great Spanish practice, but might not be for everyone. The house seems even bigger than it looks in the online picture. Perfectly comfortable for the 5 of us. Franklin, the caretaker, was very helpful and patrolled the area so we didn't have to worry about thievery. All in all a wonderful trip and we hope to make it back one day.

Not what we expected but enjoyable after a few days

  • 2 of 5

Jiquillio is a rough little fishing village. Our first impressions were quite shocked at how poor the town is with emaciated dogs everywhere! We figured out very quickly that no one in the are speaks any English so it was very difficult asking for anything. We had little contact with the caretaker Jose besides getting some boogie boards. We had to write out the amount of cordobas in the sand to communicate how much they were to rent.

The house was comfortable but a bit run down, no doubt from the sea air and weather. We enjoyed our stay only after spending a few days there getting into the rhythm of the town.

The chickens/roosters wake you up at around 3:30-4 am and the traffic outside the house (the house is right on the main road) starts up with horns honking at around 5 am...then the dogs next door start barking at the people driving by. We got used to it but it was a bit of a shock--this was not a quiet, peaceful location at all!

The beach is beautiful! Every morning we went out early and splashed in the waves. The kids enjoyed the boogie boarding a lot.

Bring bug spray!!! We were eaten alive every night by mosquitoes or no-see-ums--my daughter got many bites and scratched them so much her legs bled :( The mosquito nets over the beds are absolutely essential.

Power was un reliable so be prepared for outages. One day, our power went out for 10 hours and we were quite worried about the food in the fridge.

I really wish that the owners son Bodhi was in Nicaragua at the time of our stay as we had absolutely no one to help us with any of our questions. No one spoke English and when we went down to Monty's to use their internet they were not very welcoming or seemed there were no English speaking people around and all the guests staying there were away on a tour. We really felt quite isolated in Jiquillio.

There is no internet at the we were counting on getting a "dongle" and an internet data package to use. This did not work out for us at all--the experience was quite frustrating. We really needed internet to check on our business at home so we were surprised when we had planned on having internet access and discovered that it wasn't possible. We walked to Monty's and used the internet for $5 US for an hour. They charged us for one computer but we all were able to log in and use it. One guest there even told us the wi-fi password and said no one even checks if you're a guest so you can basically use it for free.

Owner's Response: Hi readers, Peter and Sue Portugal here, responding to this review. These guests were at our house at the end of the rainy season, which is the worst time for mosquitoes anywhere in the tropics. We were there in mid-February this year and had no problems with mosquitoes and didn't need to use the mosquito nets at night. Unfortunately, our son Bodhi normally oversees the spraying for mosquitoes and he was out of the country at that time. We really try to stay on top of that to minimize the mosquito population. We love the fact that this is a bustling, rural fishing village where the local people all speak Spanish. We offer a comprehensive Welcome Packet that is quite detailed, loaded with information about how to acquire the proper dongle, power outages, etc. It is always easier when our son, Bodhi, is in the country because he speaks English and Spanish and can help when there's a problem. However, he wasn't there this time and it sounds like these folks needed some assistance. For future renters, our caretaker, Jose, can loan you his cell phone to call us in the US, if there's an issue. Other renters have been able to use their smart phones to call. I'm sorry that didn't work out for these folks. I'd like to address the dongle situation. Our Welcome Packet states that one has to acquire their own dongle in Chinandega. Usually this, and other services are done when someone uses the taxi service we recommend. There's also information in our Welcome Packet about how to get one yourself in Chinandega. The Welcome Packet has the name, number and email address of our computer friend, Luis, Vanegas, who speaks English and Spanish , and can help get the dongle set up. We sure hope that guests will enjoy this Nicaraguan experience as much as we do!

An Adventure Off the Beaten Path

  • 5 of 5

First Id say that the owners description was very accurate and helpful - this isnt for everyone and that is made clear. My daughter, son in law, and I (the mom) were here for 9 days and had a great time. Bodhi arranged for our taxi from Managua, rented us surf boards, arranged a volcano climb for two in our party, and was very helpful. Our taxi driver helped us get a cell phone ($15) on the street in the nearest city and stopped at the grocery store. He also took us to Leon for the day before we returned to Managua for our flight home. After that we bought things from peoples home (eggs, chicken, rice, beer), got things from the fruit and vegetable truck, had tortillas fresh daily, and fresh tamales delivered via bicycle. Hose, the caretaker and his family were extremly helpful even with our retarded Spanish. We ate at a little bar a 5 minute walk down the beach or road, cooked, and ate two dinners at Rancho Esperanza that were great (you need to let them know in the morning that youre coming). The beach was awsome with no other tourists - we helped launch baby turtles on their sea voyage, rode horses way down the beach, and kyaked in the estuary early one morning with a guide and saw lots of birds and learned why it is so important to the area. The hammocks under the thatched hut are a welcome relief from the hot afternoon sun and there is a wonderful breeze off the ocean all day. We have all lived out of the US at different times and found this property and area much to our liking. We had a great vacation!! Wish it could have started after we knew our way around as we did by the end - Oh well, thats the fun of discovery.

If you are looking for an "off the beaten path" escape, you must check out this house. The family who runs it, the family who cares for it, and the locals who surround it are a true pleasure. Got super fun waves, ate local foods, saw the most unbelievable lightning storms...what more can you ask for. Remember to bring a relaxed vibe and a big smile.

We are on the ocean next to the Padre Ramos Reserve. There is an active fishing community nearby as well as an undisturbed beach. The surfing in front of the house is the best in the area. We can send you our welcome packet that goes into detail about the area.
