The Painted Hills Cottage is located in the quite neighborhood of a small town of pioneer days. The European style house is surrounded by an amazing private garden that will delight you with its constant changing beauty from early spring till late fall, with Zen like serenity in winter. In the warm season, we invite you to pick fruits as they are ripening all around you and to enjoy the abundance of blossoms. In winter times the cottage offers a luxurious coziness surrounded by healing peacefulness of nature.

The spacious cottage has an artsy setting with comfy furniture, comfortable beds, and all the amenities needed for a memorable stay. All windows look out into the garden and flood the rooms with light.

The famous Painted Hills - One of the 7 Wonders of Oregon, are only 12 minutes away!

Eastern Oregon is famous for its unique landscapes, rugged beauty, and rich wildlife. It's a geological wonderland full of ancient history and adventure that invites you to explore and connect with Mother Nature in her purest form.

The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument: The John Day Fossil National Monument has 3 units, all easily reached by scenic roads that pass through spectacular landscapes. The Painted Hills, poetically beautiful at any time, are only 15 minutes away from Mitchell and provide a glimpse of this areas ancient history.

The second unit called Sheep Rock is about a 40 minute drive away and is the location of the Thomas Condon Visitor Center and Museum of Paleontology. A great place to see fossils and replicas of prehistoric plants and animals. Its great for children of all ages. Not far from there is the Cant Ranch House presenting the historical aspect of area with artifacts from pioneer days. The Blue Basin is a favorite of ours. Its a mile from the visitor center and has excellent hiking paths through amazing rock formations in all shades of greens and blues.

The 3rd unit is found near the town of Fossil and is called the Clarno Formation, gigantic rock palisades made from volcanic mud and lava flows millions of years ago.

The John Day River: The John Day River is one of the longest un-dammed rivers of North America. It flows wild and free through canyons, gorges, and picture-book wilderness, passing incredible rock formations and rugged landscapes, pastures, and sandy river beaches. The John Day River is magical in all the seasons, and is inviting you to explore, discover, hike, swim, raft, and fish. There are many areas off the beaten track where you can experience the river in all its glory, no matter what the season. There are many places along the John Day River beds that ares brimming with wild life, rare birds and plants. There is always something to see and discover!

In winter the river is often frozen and has a different kind of beauty. In spring it is swollen with melting water from the mountains and rushes through the valleys with a powerful force. Summer its rafting time and taking a cooling plunge from the rocks into a swimming hole. We would love to show you our favorite river spots!

The Ochoco National Wilderness: The Ochoco National Wilderness is a short drive away from Mitchell and has much to offer through all the seasons from cross country skiing to fishing in a clear mountain lake. There are various snow-parks, protected wilderness recreation areas, and hiking paths through old growth. The Lucky Strike Mine is located there, a great place for the kids , where you can find thunder eggs and other great rocks.

About Aruna and Barbara Jacobi

My mother and I have created the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals in 2009 with the two cottages we've used for years as our own vacation place when our family lived in Seattle. Once we've bought our 33 acre ranch located at the John Day River and 9 miles from the Painted Hills, the business idea for the vacation rentals was born out of the fact that there is very little accommodation available in this area inspire of the fact that so many visitors come to see and experience the amazing landscapes. A 3rd cottage was added just recently , a spacious 3 bedroom house which is conveniently located right across the street from the other 2 properties. A great addition and wonderful place to accommodate up to 9 guests.

This region is so rich with natural wonder and breathtaking vistas as well as the 3 units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monuments that we are happy that we can provide a special place for the travelers passing through.

Aruna and Barbara Jacobi purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Aruna and Barbara Jacobi chose Eastern Oregon

After many trips and longer journeys through various States, we have fallen in love with the unique diverse area of Eastern Oregon. We've bought the two side by side properties in1997 and have remodeled the two houses as well as created a beautiful garden over the next 10 years. It has become a true oasis in the desert that has brought an abundance of beautiful memories to many people, family members and guests alike.

What makes this cottage unique

The two cottages are only 9 miles away from the famous Painted Hills. Both other units of the John Day Fossil Beds, Clarno and Sheep Rock, are easily reached by car on the Journey through Time scenic byway route. There is an abundance of unique hiking and biking opportunities, wildlife observation, and star gazing in the vast and open night skies that makes this place very special for any adventurous outdoor lover.

Relaxing, beautiful, comfortable

  • 5 of 5

I loved staying in the Painted Hills Cottage. Barbara is so convivial and she's created a very comfortable hideaway with wonderful gardens. Her creativity is infectious. Everything is top notch for an older house: Beds, showers, heater. You will be comfortable. No dishwasher but people like me who live in an older house don't expect a dishwasher. Well stocked kitchen. Top of the line clothing washer and dryer. It's a charming place to stay.

The gardens are beautiful and the house has everything a family needs to be comfortable.

The atmosphere was totally relaxing, and it was very near the painted hills so we easily made several trips out. The grandchildren enjoyed the many toys and games available. Stargazing from the garden was amazing! Very enjoyable. We would definitely return.

  • 5 of 5

I booked this place because l wanted to take my family from Germany to a beautiful place in the heart of Oregon. Our stay could not have been better! The area around and the painted hills are amazingly stunning and the cottage is a truly loved and magical place to feel welcome. It will definitely not be the last stay there.

Thank you! Annika

Peaceful retreat in an amazing area!

  • 5 of 5

The Painted Hills Cottage is just lovely. The pictures really don't do it justice. The garden is a little piece of paradise and full of beautiful flowers and fruit trees. There is even an herb garden to make use of during your stay. The cottage itself is big enough for a large family to really spread out and not feel crowded. Everything is well stocked and cared for and the bedding, mattresses and pillows are top notch. We would highly recommend!

Charming and wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two nights at the Painted Hills Cottage. If you want quick access to the Painted Hills, this is it! 8 miles from the hills, Mitchell is the gateway, and a charming, historical little town. The cottage is clean, well-stocked for reading, fun and games, and it exudes the magical character of the hills! Barbara is a passionate gardener, and the small touches are plentiful: wood for a stove in the cozy game room, fresh eggs from Barbara's chickens in the fridge, coffee grinder, nice warm shower, peace and quiet. While eating breakfast on the screened porch, which is perched in the beautiful garden, we saw an oriole! Across the street is a stunning view of the canyon. Enjoy a little bit of a time warp to a simpler era...this place is a labor of love!

The faucet water comes from the towns own spring and is very good to drink. Fill your bottles! There are 3 restaurants in town, all serving American style breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have different closed days so one or two will always be open. The grocery store has basic foods but bring your favorite foods and beverages along. The town's gas station is closed on Sundays and the gas is a bit more expensive. You can fill up in Prineville or Fossil (depending where you come from) before you come out here. Make sure your tires have good pressure and you have a functioning reserve tire because to get to the best hiking you sometimes have to get on rough country roads. We have a charcoal barbecue but bring your own charcoal and lighting fluid. We have brochures about the things to do here in our area and will gladly share the location of our own special places with you.
