About Aruna and Barbara Jacobi

My mother and I have created the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals in 2009 with the two cottages we've used for years as our own vacation place when our family lived in Seattle. Once we've bought our 33 acre ranch located at the John Day River and 9 miles from the Painted Hills, the business idea for the vacation rentals was born out of the fact that there is very little accommodation available in this area inspire of the fact that so many visitors come to see and experience the amazing landscapes. A 3rd cottage was added just recently , a spacious 3 bedroom house which is conveniently located right across the street from the other 2 properties. A great addition and wonderful place to accommodate up to 16 guests.

This region is so rich with natural wonder and breathtaking vistas as well as the 3 units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monuments that we are happy that we can provide a special place for the travelers passing through.

Aruna and Barbara Jacobi purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Aruna and Barbara Jacobi chose Mitchell

After many trips and longer journeys through various States, we have fallen in love with the unique diverse area of Eastern Oregon. We've bought the two side by side properties in1997 and have remodeled the two houses as well as created a beautiful garden over the next 10 years. 3 years ago we've purchased a 3rd cottage, the Sunset Cottage which is located just across from the street of the other 2 properties. We've remodeled the old garage building to a small art studio that can be used as a workshop place, gallery or a meditation space. These 3 properties with their beautiful gardens and location above Mitchell on a rim, have become a true oasis in the desert that has brought an abundance of beautiful memories to many people - family members and guests alike.

What makes this cottage unique

The Painted Hills Vacation Rentals has 3 cottages located in a quite neighborhood of Mitchell. They can be rented together for a family reunion, bigger event, a special interest group or workshops. All of our 3 cottages are listed with homeway.com and vrbo.com. The cottages are only 9 miles away from the famous Painted Hills one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon. Both other units of the John Day Fossil Beds, Clarno and Sheep Rock, are easily reached by car on the Journey through Time scenic byway route. Smith Rock - another one of the 7 wonders of Oregon - is only 1.5 hours away by car. There is an abundance of unique hiking and biking opportunities, wildlife observation, and star gazing in the vast and open night skies that makes this place very special for any adventurous outdoor lover. For us this business is more then just a way of income - we truly love to host people and share this special area with them. Working in the gardens, remodeling the cottages, and creating this special magic for our guests is part of our daily life and our joy. Many of our guests have come as strangers and left as friends, returning for many more visits and bringing their families and friends. We love this life, our unique region and hope to welcome you here soon!

Notes:
The faucet water comes from the towns own spring and is very good to drink. Fill your bottles! There are 3 restaurants in town, all serving American style breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have different closed days so one or two will always be open. The grocery store has basic foods but bring your favorite foods and beverages along. The town's gas station is closed on Sundays and the gas is a bit more expensive. You can fill up in Prineville or Fossil (depending where you come from) before you come out here. Make sure your tires have good pressure and you have a functioning reserve tire because to get to the best hiking you sometimes have to get on rough country roads. We have a charcoal barbecue but bring your own charcoal and lighting fluid. We have brochures about the things to do here in our area and will gladly share the location of our own special places with you.

This is one of the most amazing places we've ever stayed in, and we've traveled the world :-)

  • 5 of 5

The Painted Hills Cottage is simply magic. The kids were in heaven with so many lovey and thoughtful details including the whimsical barn room featuring great dinosaur toys and board games. We specially loved to hang out in the garden which was full of flowers, some we didn't even know. We saw humming birds buzzing around the blooming bushes, and adored all the little art objects throughout the place. The beds were cozy, the linen cheerful, the kitchen well stocked, and everything was very clean and fresh. The house stayed cool all day and it was great to get back "home" after we've spend all day exploring area when it got quite hot.

My kids are asking when we can come back !

Hopefully soon :-)

Beautiful house and garden in an amazing location

  • 5 of 5

We had the delight of staying here with our 9 and 13 year old for 6 days. The garden is beautiful and sitting outside to eat or have tea was great. The house is like a home and we felt at home there. Clean and comfortable, everything we needed was there and the kitchen is very well stocked. There are so many things to do in the area and there were lots of information in the house about the activities from Barbara. A great location to walk down to the cafes and the local brewpub if you don't want to cook, the shop had the groceries we needed. The kids loved the game room and we watched a few movies at night. Barbara is a wonderful host, she gave us some great suggestions for day trips and we cannot wait to return. Would highly recommend for a family holiday

The way vacations should be.

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in the Painted Hills cottage. It was a magical, fairyland filled with lush plants and splashes of brightly-colored flowers. It's a gardener's paradise. We loved relaxing in the grass and watching the trees dance in the wind while hummingbirds and hawks pass by. Thank you Barbara for sharing this space with us and allowing us all to enjoy it.

a wonderful, quaint cottage with a BEAUTIFUL garden at the heart of an outdoor wonderland!

  • 5 of 5

We really loved the location, we took every opportunity we could to enjoy the garden and the cottage is in a prime location to be able to visit the various parts of the John Day Fossil Beds Monument. We were able to go to all three units of the park over the course of the weekend without feeling like we spent too much time in the car. Mitchell has a few spots to unwind at after hiking too, we enjoyed a piece of homemade peach pie at the Sidewalk Cafe and beer at Tiger Town Brewery. The staff at Tiger Town are delightful :)

I highly recommend having your morning coffee on one of the many places to sit in the garden, or finishing your day off with a glass of wine under the stars. The wood stove in the shared room really is incredibly cozy as well!

Barbara is an incredible host, making sure the kitchen is stocked with all the necessary cooking wares and providing the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. There's plenty of places to sleep, movies to watch, and games to play which was perfect for us since we had 2 teenage boys and a toddler to distract while we cooked. The cottage is quirky and artfully decorated, we really enjoyed the space. The ONLY drawback to the cottage is that it has only one bathroom, with 3 kids and 3 adults the line to the bathroom in the morning and before bed got pretty long. However that won't stop us from trying to book with Barbara and Aruna again for a family reunion trip down the road :)
