About Aruna and Barbara Jacobi
My mother and I have created the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals in 2009 with the two cottages we've used for years as our own vacation place when our family lived in Seattle. Once we've bought our 33 acre ranch located at the John Day River and 9 miles from the Painted Hills, the business idea for the vacation rentals was born out of the fact that there is very little accommodation available in this area inspire of the fact that so many visitors come to see and experience the amazing landscapes. A 3rd cottage was added just recently , a spacious 3 bedroom house which is conveniently located right across the street from the other 2 properties. A great addition and wonderful place to accommodate up to 16 guests. This region is so rich with natural wonder and breathtaking vistas as well as the 3 units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monuments that we are happy that we can provide a special place for the travelers passing through.
Aruna and Barbara Jacobi purchased this Cottage in 1997
Why Aruna and Barbara Jacobi chose Mitchell
After many trips and longer journeys through various States, we have fallen in love with the unique diverse area of Eastern Oregon. We've bought the two side by side properties in1997 and have remodeled the two houses as well as created a beautiful garden over the next 10 years. 3 years ago we've purchased a 3rd cottage, the Sunset Cottage which is located just across from the street of the other 2 properties. We've remodeled the old garage building to a small art studio that can be used as a workshop place, gallery or a meditation space. These 3 properties with their beautiful gardens and location above Mitchell on a rim, have become a true oasis in the desert that has brought an abundance of beautiful memories to many people - family members and guests alike.
What makes this Cottage unique
The Painted Hills Vacation Rentals has 3 cottages located in a quite neighborhood of Mitchell. They can be rented together for a family reunion, bigger event, a special interest group or workshops. All of our 3 cottages are listed with homeway.com and vrbo.com. The cottages are only 9 miles away from the famous Painted Hills one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon. Both other units of the John Day Fossil Beds, Clarno and Sheep Rock, are easily reached by car on the Journey through Time scenic byway route. Smith Rock - another one of the 7 wonders of Oregon - is only 1.5 hours away by car. There is an abundance of unique hiking and biking opportunities, wildlife observation, and star gazing in the vast and open night skies that makes this place very special for any adventurous outdoor lover. For us this business is more then just a way of income - we truly love to host people and share this special area with them. Working in the gardens, remodeling the cottages, and creating this special magic for our guests is part of our daily life and our joy. Many of our guests have come as strangers and left as friends, returning for many more visits and bringing their families and friends. We love this life, our unique region and hope to welcome you here soon!

Oasis in the middle of nowhere.
We're had a delightful time. The cottage is as advertised and more. The grounds are wonderful. You drive through miles of nothing, pull into a charming little town with what looks like a population of 3 and then, arrive at the cottage. What a great place with a wonderful host. The Painted Hills are close by and beautiful.
Great location for a family holiday
This is our second visit to this wonderful home. The home is well stocked, clean and the garden is beautiful to sit out and relax or eat meals. There is a lot to do in the area for many days out, local walks, the John Day river is great for swimming. We shopped at the local shop a short walk from the house for lunches and snacks. The host provided lots of local information on walks, swimming holes and scenic drives and day trips which was great. Highly recommend the cottages for a family holiday, an area of natural beauty and lots to do!.
Great hombase to explore Painted Hills
Thank you Barbara for creating such a lovely retreat for us in Mitchell. Loved the garden, the country kitchen, and the colors. Everything was comfortable and clean. We had a great stay, got to eat outside in the garden and relax between explorations. Highly recommend this spot so close to the Painted Hills and John Day Fossil Beds.
Thank you for your positive feedback and your recommendation to other travelers to our amazing region!
Beautiful natural garden and truly the gateway stop to explore the Painted Hills. Kitchen trash can was disgusting though and bath towels should be upgraded considering the price of just shy of $700 for two nights, four people and one tiny dog. Wonderful shower. Dog fee should be per stay not per night. Doesn’t make sense. I’ve stayed in many VRBO Airbnb and have done house exchanges around the world so have reasonable comparisons. WonderfulAvailable info was great and town of Mitchell is classic old town.
Thank you for your honest feedback. We are working hard to make your stay special and appreciate your thoughts of how we can improve. We will check with our housekeeper about the need to pay more attention to special areas in the kitchen. We also will check the towels to see if some need to be replaced. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
About the dogs: Size doesn't matter! We have to special clean after guests with dogs of all sizes and breeds. We are the only place for miles who even allow pets. It takes special attention which costs more with housekeeping. We also have to shampoo carpets and furniture to get out pet stains, hair, and smells more often because we allow dogs. We love dogs and want our guests to be able to bring them along. The pet fee is still less than leaving your dogs at a professional pet care center.
About the rate: I hope you can also see that the rate is only so high because you use a platform which charges customer fees on top of our rates. We are not receiving this amount for the 2 nights.

We loved both the house and the cottage. We rented both for my daughter’s surprise engagement at the painted hills. The entire time was magical. I highly recommend. Loved Barbara, the magic of the properties, and the beauty of the painted hills. We Are planning this area as an annual family get together!!!
A little slice of heaven!
We loved the colorful spirit of the owner. The little cottage is a dream for anyone who is a hippie at heart! A perfect place to relax.
