Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

This property if the only remaining part of the estate of Governor Parker who, in 1915, hosted a visit here by Teddy Roosevelt. The log cabin lies in over 2 acres of garden and is set back from the more than 190 feet of beach front to allow for privacy and tranquility. The cabin was one of the very few structures to survive Katrina, though it was halved in size by the storm. With the beach at its feet, it is also only a short distance further to the picturesque port and to the center of Pass Christian, which is being rebuilt.

Our cabin was on tour with the Pass Christian Historical society May 1, 2011. Come stay in a historic site.

The cabin has been totally renovated with luxury fittings in the bathroom and an ingenious kitchen area. There are just 2 rooms, as well as the bathroom, the bedroom with king sized bed, and 42” television, with cable and wireless Internet. We only have one TV; there is no TV in the living room, kitchen area. If you would like a second TV bring your own. The main room, which serves as sitting room, dining room and kitchen, has a dining table seating 6 and a queen size sofa bed. Both rooms open onto a large screen porch (the former great room) ideal for enjoying relaxing drinks, and on cooler nights sitting in front of the wood-burning fireplace (easily lit by gas) or generally sitting and admiring the extensive garden, under the ceiling fan with a wonderful view over the gulf. There are lights on the two north corners of the house that illuminate when their motion detector is activated so you have light when you arrive and leave.

There is a fenced pool in the garden, a short walk from the cabin. The property is fenced. During the summer, if there has been a lot of rain the grass can be long. Due to the expense of mowing 2 acres we only mow every other week. If this may be a problem for you please contact Rebecca O’Dwyer, our manager and ask when the grass will be mowed to make sure it doesn’t disturb you. All other times of the year this is not a problem.

This property has been in my family for over 110 years. It is a place of tranquility, privacy, serenity and beauty. I am delighted to share it with those that would like to experience its beauty. The log house was built in the 1920’s by my grandfather. If you want new construction, this is also not the place. It is a place for writers, artists and those of us that want to unplug from everyday life to come and be renewed. If you are looking for TV in every room, perfectly manicured lawns where your dog is not welcome this is not the place for you.

An excerpt from A Book-Lover’s Holidays in the Open. 1916. By Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919).

“ON June 7, 1915, I was the guest of my friend John M. Parker, of New Orleans, at his house at Pass Christian, Mississippi. For many miles west, and especially east, of Pass Christian, there are small towns where the low, comfortable, singularly picturesque and attractive houses are owned, some by Mississippi planters, some by city folk who come hither from the great Southern cities, and more and more in winter-time from the great Northern cities also, to pass a few months. The houses, those that are isolated and those in the little towns, stand in what is really one long row; a row broken by vacant reaches, but as a whole stretching for sixty miles, with the bright waters of the Gulf lapping the beach in front of them, and behind them leagues of pine forest. Between the Gulf and the waters lies a low ridge or beach of white sand. It is hard to make anything grow in this sand; but the owners of the houses have succeeded, using dead leaves and what manure is available; and in this leaf-mould the trees and grasses and flowers grow in profusion. Long, flimsy wooden docks stretch out into the waters of the Gulf; there is not much bad weather, as a rule, but every few years there comes a terrible storm which wrecks buildings and bridges, destroys human lives by the thousand, washes the small Gulf sailing craft ashore, and sweeps away all the docks.”

Why do I say that the property has been in my family for over 110 years? And Roosevelt visited in 1915. My grandparents owned the property next to Gov. Parker. In 1969 my mother bought the Governor’s house and incorporated it into our lot.

We will be more successful in all our endeavors if we can let go of the habit of running all the time, and take little pauses to relax and re-center ourselves. And we'll also have a lot more joy in living. Thich Nhat Hanh

About Rebecca O'Dwyer

New Orleans native, spent summers in the 'Pass' growing up.

Rebecca O'Dwyer purchased this house in 1906

Why Rebecca O'Dwyer chose Pass Christian

My grandparents bought this property in the early 1900's.. My grandfather had the cabin build in the 1920's. Teddy Roosevelt visited a part of the property in about 1915, that part was added in 1969 to the original plot, it is mentioned in Roosevelt's diaries.

What makes this house unique

Just sitting in the pool on a hot evening talking and looking at the stars. Some mornings in the spring or fall there is very heavy fog on the beach, beautiful for photographing. The sunrises and sunsets especially in the winter months can be fantastic, when the sun rises and sets over the water. Walking on the beach, especially in the winter months, when you have the beach to yourself and can commune with the sea birds. Birding in the garden especially during the fall and spring migration. The birds are gathering in the fall to gain strength before they set off over the Gulf. One visitor commented in our guestbook at the house on how excited they were to see so many Bluebirds in the garden. There are always birds, just many more during the migration. Come and add to your life list.

Guestbook comments from the manager

While the property is lovely and dog friendly, the local beach ordinances forbid dogs on the beach. We will not return for that reason.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this cabin, this town ❤️

  • 5 of 5

We took an early holiday trip in Dec along with our doggies to get away & just be by the sea. There is something magical about this property. We felt such peace. Even tho the weather was foggy, we still managed to enjoy the experience!

The property is secure. It is in a really nice posh neighborhood. The outside shutters close if you want a little more privacy or less morning sun. The bed is comfy & the shower has endless hot water!

There is no shortage of some of the best dining you will ever experience nearby. A lot of the restaurants are pet friendly & we took our dogs with us to most places! There is a secure fence around the property & our dogs were very happy to safely romp the beautiful two acres.

The beach is right there! So incredibly cool to take a walk on the beach anytime of the day or night & walk this peaceful beach. Felt safe.

Everything was clean. The cabin was larger than we expected - you are not on top of one another & there is privacy. We slept soundly in the bed & had absolutely no complaints. We just made resv for our upcoming anniversary in April!

Can't wait to go back to "our cabin by the sea"

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. It is a wonderful place and we are so happy to share it. April will be a wonderful perfect time to be in the Pass. We just got a new pool man and the pool will be a saltwater system when you get back.

Other than the train horn, our stay in the cabin was perfect! Our dog loved the big yard and we loved being just steps from the beach!

The perfect place

  • 5 of 5

We loved every moment. We walked to the beach in the mornings. We played on the grounds in the afternoon. We watched the sun set. We enjoyed the stars. My granddaughter loved playing on the beach, the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center and the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies.

Next time we'll do the same and add a trip to NASA's Infinity Science Center.

What a smorgasbord of things to do for adults, children and families!

Perfect little cottage in the perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay here!! It is just far enough outside of New Orleans to do day trips, but the Pass itself is so quaint you will want to stay in town too! We will definitely be back! Even though it was cold outside, we made fires and enjoyed the lanai. We could tell the property was well cared for and it was very clean. To the owners-- thank you so much for opening this property up for so many people to enjoy it! We made tons of memories here!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your super review. Yes, there is lots to do. If you like interesting spots, drive east. In that direction is the George Orr Museum that Frank Gehry designed (Biloxi) and a little further is Ocean Springs with neat shops and a wonderful mural by Walter Anderson. Don't miss Shearwater Pottery there too.

Very nice... a lot of personality, but with a few quirks

  • 4 of 5

We were seeking a quiet place to spend a few days around a one day visit into New Orleans to see the WWII Museum. We found this place online and it seemed to fit our needs.. quiet, privacy, and a pristine nearby gulf beach. Although hurricane Nate preceded us by only a day or so, we found little sign of her passage.

The house is compact, essentially a living-dining-kitchen area, a sizable bathroom with a shower stall, and a large bedroom (plus a pass-through containing the refrigerator and shelves.) Most of the ceiling area is exposed, peeled, round log beams. The flooring is flagstone, throughout. There is a TV in the bedroom area along with 2 chairs.

The "kitchen area" is furnished with a single furniture-like unit that contains the sink, dish washer, several drawers, a 2 burner cook top, and an oven, all contained in one unit. It was quite adequate for our casual cooking needs once we located everything and figured out how to operate them. The cookware provided was quite good. A Microwave can be found in the pass-through.

Be aware, there are no curtains, blinds, or the like on any of the windows or doors. If you're insecure in any way, this may be a problem for you. However, each window and door is equipped with an outside shutter (about half of which we found already closed with about half of those with their fastenings rusted, so they couldn't be opened.) That resulted in the interior of the house being deprived of the daytime light, and consequently much darker than we desired. We'd like to see more interior light at night as well, much of which could be accomplished with the relatively simple addition of light fixtures to the ceiling fans in the bedroom and sitting area. Current lighting is primarily a few free-standing lamps in the sitting area.

We both read in the evenings, but found that with the limited lighting and only a single upholstered couch, there wasn't a particularly good place to do so.

And, much to our surprise, trains pass less than 1,000 feet away several times both day and night with whistles blaring to warn all the many crossings in Pass Christian. There's little to be done about that, but a prior warning in the listing would have been appreciated.

That's about it. We would certainly stay here again if we were in the area.

And, one more thing... did TR stay in THIS structure or did he stay in a much larger house that once stood among the oaks on the ocean side of the property?.
