If you are looking for a more active time away from home, butterfly farms, volcanoes rain forests, river rafting, horseback riding, are all an easy drive.

If you want to hang ten or simply stroll on the pristine Costa Rica Beaches or swim in the warm Pacific water of famous surfing beaches like Jaco and Playa Hermosa which are only 45 minutes away.

Pura Vida!: It's no accident that Costa Ricans' motto is 'Pura Vida.' They are lovely, well educated, warm, and welcoming people.

About diana baron

I am a mom, business owner, and i grew up in a large family in Los Angeles. I love Latin culture, the kindess, the food, the love of family, and the appreciation of nature.

Why diana baron chose Atenas

More than ten years ago, my son had a 'foreign country' experience during high school right in this tiny town of Costa Rica. While visiting him, his art teacher showed me this area, where at the time there were no houses, and basically a wild hill overlooking the valley. i felt at that moment i had found 'my place' on this earth, like the character in Carlos Castenada speaks about. So, i bought the land. It took me two years to find the right designer and builder to work with, whose aesthetic i appreciated and who understood mine. The designer was an American woman so she had experienced the many conveniences in homes that other builders here didn't - lots of closets, lots of drawers and storage in the kitchen etc. Her husband Fred was my builder and he used a crew headed by Lumberto to build the house. Fred & LInda have moved back tothe states, but i still work with Lumberto on upgrades and in face Jaime, who worked on my crew, is my caretaker. They know every square inch of this place and feel a part of it too.

What makes this house unique

I am writing this while sitting in the swing chair on the veranda over looking the valley. I can hear the Tucans croaking in the tree below and the sound of birds in the morning is beautiful. My neighbors cows are just now making their way to the river below. i've already taken a walk through mango fields and coffee fields. I brought some carrots with me todayy to feed some of the horses I see along the way. i make my way during the day from here, to the rocking chairs, to the hammock to the lounge chairs, etc. while checking the news in the States.

Families welcome, but no children under 5. There are a few stairs to get from driveway to the house, but the house itself is on one level. we have had plenty of active older guests stay at the house and be completely comfortable. the house will be cleaned when you arrive and once a week if your stay is longer than a week. However, you may wish daily maid service for an additional $30.00 per day. the house also has a complete wifi set up, and you can work and not tell your colleagues you are in Costa Rica.

Suited our every need.....

  • 5 of 5

This house and destination were perfect. Hard to add anything that hasn’t been said already. Previous reviews say it all. We have just returned from the most restful vacation. The town of Atenas had everything we needed. The people warm and friendly. The location is great for so many of the beautiful places to be seen in Costa Rica, but was more than happy to stay at the house and just relax. The house had all we needed, many areas to sit and take in the magnificent views. The house and location will not disappoint. Would love to return and probably will. Thank you Diana for renting out your home so others can enjoy.

Owner's Response: HI Barbara, I am so glad that our home made for your perfect vacation!!! Atenas IS warm and friendly and so close - and yet the five min it takes to get there seems so far since our house is so private. I'm on my way tomorrow and i can't wait to get back to paradise - and i do hope we can find a perfect time for you to return. The great thing about coming a different month each time is that there is always something different in bloom! Pura Vida, Diana

Never a disappointment!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 4th stay in Diana’s beautiful home! We choose to stay here for a multitude of reasons but overall value for the amenities and the location are very good. The house is well appointed and has most everything you need. It is totally private and has one of the best views in the area - overlooking a breathtaking valley. The pool 🏊?‍♀️ s a decent size and not like some of the other ‘soaker’ pools that the other rentals offer. The location is another reason we enjoy staying here. Very close to Atenas and well within walking distance. The house property manager, Leticia, is always available to help should you require any assistance...very friendly and just a wonderful person. Jaime, the grounds keeper, also very friendly and does a magnificent job maintaining the property. On this particular trip we had the pleasure to meet the owner,Diana, with whom we enjoyed a wonderful dinner with. An absolute perfect vacation to one of the most beautiful little locations in the world! Thank you Diana! B&R ..Vancouver Island, Canada.

Owner's Response: It was so great to meet you too. In all these years of having the house, i've only once met anyone who has stayed here and that was only passing them on the road. I am so glad we had a chance to share a glass (or two) of wine and rum and a delicious dinner (props to our cook!!) on the terrace. And your review of the house is so flattering, since i saw photos of YOURS, the design and decoration of which is impeccable and i know your standards!! I can't wait to have you back. xxdiana

Couple house

  • 4 of 5

The house has a specular view of the valley and we enjoyed watching the birds soaring by. The outdoor area is excellent.

We were 2 couples and found the master bedroom to be impressive but the second bedroom was tiny, it looks bigger in the picture, with hardly enough room to turn around. It has a double bed, one night stand and a tiny closet. The living area was spacious and kitchen was equipped with the basics; we would have appreciated glass wine glasses.

Diana and Letica were great to work with before and during our stay.

Thank you.

Best relaxing family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had rented this house for 6 days in December 2017 and it was simply divine! It was beautiful, secluded but so close to what we needed in terms of food, and it was so relaxing that we didn't want to leave. I would definitely rent this place again. We have three small boys, ages 11, 8, and 6. Our 11- and 8-year-old were fine staying in the bedroom off of the pool area. But our 6-year-old didn't want to sleep with them (he was scared), so he crashed on the sofa in the bedroom with us.

I did feel that it was a little too far away from some of the things I may have wanted to do (volcanos, etc.). We did day trips, but as you've heard, you don't want to be driving at night because the roads can bend a lot. If we had more money, we would have gotten a hotel for a night at another hotel closer to a tourist destination we wanted to see.

But overall, you can't go wrong with this property. I enjoyed taking pictures of the gorgeous flowers in the yard, walking along the road with my family in the gated community and seeing the iguanas and other sites, and just enjoying decompressing for 6 days. Ahhhh...I want to go back!

Here are a few tips:

1. Rent a 4x4. The driveway is STEEP and you'll need all-wheel drive.

2. Stay a night elsewhere close to the volcano and other sites you want to see. Most of the good stuff is about 30 min to 1.5 hours away.

3. Take a day and just stay around the house and chill in the pool and the hammock. Grab a good and soak in the sun!

4. There is a cute cat on the property (we named him Bruno, LOL) and he knows how to use is paw to slide the sliding glass doors to get in. He's friendly, but if you're allergic, this could be a problem. The kids really enjoyed having him around, and I did, too, although we didn't let him inside.

5. Travel with someone who speaks Spanish. I speak it, although not totally fluent, but I'm able to ask directions, order food, read signs, etc. My husband was CLUELESS. Atenas and some of the areas surrounding don't have as many English-speaking people in local businesses and restaurants.

6. Have fun! It goes fast!

We will definitely be returning in the near future!

If never-ending views are what you dream of...

  • 5 of 5

We love the end-of-the-road experience when we travel as it usually lends to the most magnificent views. Diana's home, however, was by far the most idyllic we have ever visited. The pictures do not do her home justice, nor do they capture the captivating sounds of this rural setting. Each morning we awoke to the gentle voices of cows, roosters and an endless array of beautiful birds. Cows would literally meander curiously only steps beyond the property boundaries. And not to be overlooked, the surrounding fauna was breathtaking. The home itself is spacious and well-maintained with a wonderfully private layout. Set in a small gated community, the Atenas city center was only a 5-7 minute drive, though we preferred to walk the hilly area each morning (approximately 30 minutes). Leticia, the property manager, was absolutely wonderful to work with - a true asset. We hope to return again and would highly recommend.

Our first time in Costa Rica....but certainly not the last

  • 5 of 5

Amazing ! That is the word that best summarizes our stay here. The entire booking process with Diana was absolutely seamless and we were greeted so warmly upon our arrival. The location is simply perfect. The view is breathtaking...taking our morning coffee on the balcony was just one of our favourite things to do. We were 2 adults & 3 teenagers and everyone was comfortable. Everybody loved the house, the pool, the weather, etc. We always felt safe. My deepest wish is to return soon as there are so many things to see in Costa Rica. And staying here was just one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you Diana. I am very grateful we landed on your property as this is where we began our Costa Rican adventure. Next time, we will stay longer, for sure. Pura vida.
