About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 7-8)

Beautiful Rocky Mountain Retreat is located halfway between Flagstaff and Williams, AZ at 7500 ft elevation surrounded by 3 secluded acres of tall Ponderosa Pines. This immaculate cabin is beautifully decorated and fully furnished with all the modern amenities. There are 2 bathrooms, two queen-size bedrooms, and a third room with a bunk bed with a full-size on the bottom and twin on top. There is also a pull-out queen sofa-bed. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the modern appliances you could need and full sets of serving and cooking utensils for entertaining. Free wireless internet is available (hopefully for fun not work :-). There is also a full-size washer and dryer. Hair dryers, curling irons and basic toiletries are included. There are plenty of cozy pillows and blankets . You can curl up in front of the stone fireplace and watch the wildlife outside. Rocky Mountain Retreat has all the comforts of home.

Outside the Cabin: The large wraparound deck is great for outdoor family meals. Then relax with some marshmallows around the campfire or watch the swaying trees or bright stars as you lay in the hammock. Children will love the tree house with slide and hammock, swing sets, horseshoes, or playing basketball in front of the 2-car garage. There is a huge selection of board games, videos and DVDs as well as 3 satellite TVs. Nearby hiking and off-roading trails abound. The Grand Canyon Deer Farm/Petting Zoo and Oak Hill Snowplay area (in winter), and Bearizona are only minutes away. There are several small lakes nearby, as well as the Lava Cave and breath-taking Sycamore Canyon hiking/rock climbing area. The area around our cabin is abundant with elk.

The Area: Rocky Mountain Retreat offers a true sense of being away from it all, yet the town of and Flagstaff with over 200 restaurants, great night life and shopping is only 20 mins away. The historic Route 66 town of Williams is only 10 mins away, where you can catch the Grand Canyon Railway or Polar Express (in winter). The Grand Canyon is a 60 min drive, and fantastic Oak Creek Canyon/ Sedona is about 45 mins. There are two downhill ski resorts 30 and 45 mins away and a cross country ski trail just a couple minutes away. Snowbowl resort is at 11,500 ft elevation and offers 32 trails of great skiing/snowboarding; in the summer you can take the skyride to the top for panoramic views that include the Grand Canyon, and fantastic hiking. Rocky Mountain Retreat has something for everyone. Why stay in a hotel room or rent a house in a subdivision when you can create the special memories of a real get-away vacation in the cool pines at Rocky Mountain Retreat!

About Dawn

My husband and I have always loved the mountains. He grew up in the city (Chicago), but I grew up in rural California camping in Yosemite most weekends with my parents, wonderful memories... We wanted to own a special mountain retreat where we could build our family memories while our kids were still young (the above picture is 13 years after we built our cabin ;). We love our time in the woods and our cabin has become very special to our family. We truly enjoy sharing our cabin with our guests.

Dawn purchased this cabin in 1999

Why Dawn chose Arizona

We searched a lot of mountain areas and decided that the Flagstaff area had the most to offer - beautiful pine tree covered mountains, close access to skiing, the Grand Canyon and Sedona, a great historic town with tons of restaurants and shopping, and temperatures 20-25 degrees cooler than Phoenix. The town of Flagstaff has a wonderful mix of small-town quaintness and great energy from the young university population. There are fantastic family-owned restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques, as well as all the convenient chain stores we're used to. We knew we wanted acreage with lots of trees (we have enough of 'subdivision life' in Phoenix). We found some beautiful land just 20 mins outside Flagstaff and built our cabin. It was a dream come true for us. We hope your family enjoys this peaceful getaway as much as we have!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We did have a great stay at Rocky Mountain Retreat. It was very comfortable and we had everything we needed. We especially loved the outdoor fire pit. We had a campfire in the snow and made snowmen at night. The kids thought that was really fun! If we come back to Arizona we will definitely stay again and we are telling our friends. Happy New year! Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

I had some questions prior to our stay, reached out to Dawn and she was very friendly and got back to me right away. We were 4 adults, 2 kids and a dog - The inside of the house is a bit snug, mainly the kitchen... but other than that we were very comfortable. The outside area is what makes this house. It is a beautiful secluded location with a basketball hoop, swing set for the kids with a slide, and a huge fire pit. Everything we needed to make s'mores was on the counter when we arrived which was nice of them to provide. Also some additional munchies for the kids and a bottle of wine for the adults, much appreciated! We struggled logging into the wifi when we first got there, but were able to find the login password the next day. Not much cell phone service in the house, but if you take a walk outside you are able to make and receive calls. Close to Bearizona which the kids loved! At the cabin we even saw a deer, squirrels and rabbits. We hung outside most of the time and everything we needed was there! Thank you for an amazing stay, we will be back!

Thank you Dawn for sharing your cabin with us. We very much enjoyed our stay. You were very responsive to our every need. The cabin was clean and stocked. We look forward to visiting next summer to get out of the southern Arizona heat.

Cozy cottage between 3 great destinations!

  • 5 of 5

Only good things to say about the place.

But VRBO's website is another thing--I have only annoying things to say about VRBO's online services. VRBO peppered us with so many useless emails, we lost the check-in instructions. VRBO is a maze of red tape. If I wanted red tape, I'd go to the MVD or file an application with the EPA.

Fantastic Location - great vacation rental

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with a family of 4 adults and 3 children and had a wonderful time.

Overall we loved the house and location. It was quiet and relatively secluded. The elevation ensures cool summer nights.

The 3 bedrooms suited us well. The dishes and kitchen were very clean. The hostess thought of everything. There is a new Weber gas grill that suited us well. The laundry facilities and very complete kitchen was very nice. The bathrooms were clean and there was no visible mold nor rust.

The garage could have been a bit cleaner. Some of the screen windows had gaps in the screens - that could be an area to be upgraded. The roof had a bit of leaves of debris on it - but overall the maintenance was good.

Fire restrictions were in place, so we missed out on the fire pit in the evening. There were several monsoon rains so those restrictions were being lifted but only as we were leaving.

If the weather and your vehicle permits it, I'd recommend continuing on the dirt road to route 180 to visit the Grand Canyon - as the dirt road is destination onto itself.

We'd love to return.

Everything as advertised and more. A true turn-key property.

  • 5 of 5

Just back from a magical week in the woods with family. This house and property were a perfect fit for our party of 8. The adults lounged on the deck as the kids ran all over the property. There was little to no tv watching as the outdoor beckoned us constantly. The kitchen was very well equipped and I struggle to think of any improvements to suggest. We cooked all but three meals here and that was exactly what we were hoping to do. It got just a tad warm during the day, however, the nights were perfect and the fans did the trick during the day.

We all agree that we would rent this place again in a heart beat and we are grateful for all of the attention to detail the owners put into this place. We will never forget our time at Rocky Mountain retreat!
