Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms + 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6 in bedrooms+1 on pullout in living room)

Winter Harbor is a quaint working fishing community and summer playground.

Cheerful, comfortable, close, convenient…all describe our home nestled in this quaint fishing village where one can enjoy what Maine has to offer and then return to a quiet home where only Maine’s birds or a harbor’s foghorn can be heard so one can relax, reflect and rest up for a new day of adventures.

There are 3 bedrooms, all eclectically decorated with Maine themes, country quilts, artwork, antiques to provide that pleasurable “visiting grandma’s” venue yet still incorporating today’s amenities of a newly updated galley kitchen complete with local Deer Isle granite countertops with bar seating, microwave, refrigerator, ceramic cook-top, coffee maker, toaster, small oven/broiler, pots, pans, china, silverware, washer/dryer. Our open concept dining/living room features TV w/DVD & VCR player, movie library, radio/CD player, and wireless internet. Bed linens, towels, paper products are provided. There are 2 full bathrooms, one newly finished with stall shower and pedestal sink.

On our back porch one can enjoy having a private moment with morning coffee and a book or having a BBQ or lobster on our outdoor grill. New this year is a lovely, stone patio with a 3 foot stone fire-pit. There is an awesome playground across from our home that our young visitors would certainly enjoy and parents can view easily. We are on the end of a dead-end street so traffic is very limited. We also have some board games, and outdoor toys for those who would like to partake. We have several bikes in our garage for you use and pleasure.

Kayaks can be rented easily from locations mentioned in our “Welcome to our Home” book as well as other attractions, ferry & bus schedules, shops, hikes and of course the magnificent Acadia National Park’s Schoodic Peninsula whose entrance is a short ten minute drive from our house and covers nearly 2500 acres where sightseeing, hiking, biking, picnicking are all there for your enjoyment.

A free excursion bus sponsored by LLBean picks up passengers at the end of our road at Rte. 186 to take folks around Winter Harbor and Schoodic Peninsula throughout the day during the summer season allowing passengers to get off the bus at a spot and be picked up later on another bus run. We are a few minutes’ walk to the ocean, restaurants, grocery store, lobster pounds, post office, public library, historic society museum, artists’ studios, bank, farmers’ market, a unique 5&10 cent store, ice cream parlor, antique and handmade artisan crafts shops.

The nearby Bar Harbor Ferry on Sargent St. can take you over to Bar Harbor which serves as a leisurely transportation vehicle as well as a sight-seeing boat ride on one of the prettiest bays in Maine. There is also a public boat launch, golf course, and our historic Hammond Hall where many varied, live entertainment performances are held throughout the year—all just moments away from our doorstep!

Swimming is available off the rocky shores or one can seek enjoyment at Jones and Flanders Ponds with their sandy beaches and fresh waters which are just a short distance away where one can do some boating or fishing as well. Also, the area has vineyards hosting tours and tastings, historic buildings, unique shops, a variety of eateries, other quaint fishing villages, art galleries, antique shops, hiking trails, educational science and environmental centers, and more of Maine’s beautiful coastline, mountains and lakes…all beckoning folks to come and explore.

Keywords: 3 BR, 2 full baths, galley kitchen, deck, patio w/firepit, 4 min walk to town.

About Robert Granell

My wife retired as a substitute teacher and I'm retired from IBM after 34 years. We've enjoyed our yearly vacations in this area since 1991 because of the beautiful views, warm people and the slower pace of life.

Robert Granell purchased this house in 2005

Why Robert Granell chose Winter Harbor

Our family has been coming to Winter Harbor since 1991 when we had an opportunity to rent a vacation home from one of our friends which was located on the water facing Mount Desert Island across from Frenchman’s Bay. We stayed for a week and had one of the nicest, most relaxing, vacations we’ve had, with a view that was breathtaking. Since then we came each year for the next 13 years and stayed at the same location. We got to know the area pretty well and became friends with some of the local townspeople, all of whom were very friendly, helpful and genuine. Our kids began referring to our stays as “going to our Maine house”. In 2004, our friends decided to retire and planned to use the house in Maine. Needless to say, we were very disappointed, thinking that could have been our last year staying in an area we have come to love. About the same time, the Navy left a local base and the town picked up all their housing properties and began selling them. That's when we decided to purchase one for our own. This turned out to be one of our best decisions.

What makes this house unique

Close proximity to great hiking trails, short easy walk to town multiple launch sites for kayaks, Relaxing atmosphere, and WIFI.

Good

  • 4 of 5

Nice place, Rob was a helpful and courteous host. Place is a little further from Acadia than advertised, about an hour/hour and fifteen each way so plan accordingly. Be careful with the provided address too, I copy and pasted into google maps and it took to me another site in Bar Harbor, like 30 miles away. Type Winter Harbor, ME into your gps and follow the directions provided, it’s a small town so easy to navigate. Grill area is a little poorly lit other than the fire pit, still semi-hard to see so bring some flash-lights or lanterns. Other than that, solid place to stay.

We truly enjoyed our stay!

  • 5 of 5

Having “grown up” in Winter Harbor it was amazing to come back and visit old friends. The property has everything we needed and the location was perfect! My only recommendation would be to provide more info around recycling in ME. I felt guilty throwing recyclables in the trash but didn’t have info about where to put them instead. I probably should have asked :-)

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind response we appreciate it. Regarding the recyclables, when you accessed our hospitality info, there was mention of a marked recycle bin in the garage. Not to worry, I will place them in our bin for you. Glad you enjoyed your stay.

A wonderful house in a beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house & we loved Winter Harbor! Thank you so much Robert for welcoming us to your home! The house is in a beautiful & peaceful location & is in walking distance to the ferry to Bar Harbor. The house is just as advertised with everything you need for your stay. We were really grateful for the outside garden area where we could grill & eat outdoors each evening. Robert was a fabulous host, helping us with any needs we had & giving us lots of information on the local area & it’s history. We had such a great time in this beautiful place. Our only regret is that we didn’t stay for longer! We will hopefully be back!

Convenient and pleasant duplex

  • 4 of 5

We were a group of 3 couples, 50-60+ & loved the close proximity to Acadia National Park as well as being able to walk....or short drive into town for dinner, shopping, etc. The town folk were so friendly & helpful with suggestions on places to go & visit. We didn’t have any children with us, but this would have been a perfect location if we did, as there is a play ground right across the road. I’d have given this 5 stars, except that we were looking forward to sitting around the firepit, but the area was so over grown that we decided not to even buy wood.
