'The Summit House' is on a one acre lot counting the front and back yard with clean air above the river valley. Arkansas Artist Cynthia Schanink and her husband Daniel have decorated with original one of a kind acrylic murials and watercolors in this private lodge like home located in Mount Nebo State Park. Our 4400 square foot home is great for receptions and art classes with a big party living room area on the main floor. This house is located by the mountain rim trail several feet below with the house 1500 feet above the Arkansas River Valley. The house walls are solid Arkansas cedar planks and sheet rock with 90' acrylic mural views of Spanish Castles past stone arch ways. We have decorated the rooms with real watercolor original paintings by Cynthia Schanink or Stanley Rames. We have a daybed with trundle in each bedroom, all have their own sliding glass door view and entrance onto a 62 foot deck overlooking the valley, and with five bathrooms each bedroom has there own toilet. fully furnished kitchen has lots of white dishes, four drawers of flateware, glasses and stem ware and lots of cook ware. The cement patio on the view side of the house has an out side table and gas grill off the 62'x19' great room with a large native stone wood fireplace, a 38'x19' cathedral ceiling living room and a 20'x24' game room makes this an ideal location for family reunions, weddings, receptions, business retreats, social meetings and club or church retreats. Many guest move the furniture for their event, which is fine if you move it back, but if it is attached to a water line or wall please leave it as is. We have four elegant antique tables which we want to preserve and six eight foot banquet tables stored in the game room you can use.
Enjoy all the free activities the state park provides which was rated in the top ten in the country in the early 1900's, historically noted as the 'Resort Above the Clouds'. Awaken to sunrise over the valley below from the back deck or porch and memorable sunset at 'Sunset Point' across the lane.
We are always doing more up dates and have added large mural paintings to the walls and real Arkansas cedar walls for and elegant lodge look in 2012.
1 1/2 hrs W of Little Rock on I-40, 2 hrs S. of Branson, Mo. This is a central area for going on motor cycle bike rides to any where in Arkansas. People often come to walk the road up the mountain for exercise several days a week. Please take caution when driving the two miles up and down this hill to avoid the hikers and curves.
We appreciate all reviews so that we can know all areas in which we are doing well or can fix anything that reflect on our home and business. We strive to upkeep our homes in good, clean condition to provide the atmosphere our guests experience.
We have left some décor in original style (flocked wallpaper in a bathroom) which some guests have commented positively about. Without itemizing, we have invested in improvements since we bought the Summit House replacing roof, siding, carpeting, 2 new heat and air systems, all new windows and doors and replaced interior paneling with native red cedar. We have replaced 90% of the furniture at least twice in 14 years due to damages by a very few guests. There are 16 extra blankets in closets for 11 beds and three hide-a-beds. We have a 100 year old 8' solid cherry antique desk that has a sign not to move it. We have an antique 8' marble buffet for service ware please do not move. Antique piano that has a great tone.
When guest are leaving at 11 am we can not have early check in the day you might be arriveing please allow time for housekeeping to clean and prepare the house for you. There are lots of play grounds, trails, a bathroom at the visitors center and the pavilion to enjoy the park while work is done at the house you will soon occupy.
We want our house to be perfect for your event. So we include many extras for that reason. There are two our door swings and other iron chairs. Two round table and some benches to watch the sun rise and set. Our grill is gas on one side, charcoal in the middle and a smoker on the end, we ask you to please notice the different sides so it will remain so. The horse shoe game is in the side yard with the fire pit. Please remember your extra toilet paper, we provide five rolls one for each bathroom.

Daniel and Cynthia have been married for 40 years and have three married children and five grand children. We have three children and five grandchildren in our wonderful family. This photo of us was taken at Sunset Point 1000 ft from our house so we usually walk here each evening. We will be moving in to this location after December to enjoy living on Mount Nebo with the air so clean above the valley. We love all its hiking trails, wildlife, tennis courts and its so beautiful.
Now fifteen years later we have made big improvements to the house and flowerbeds and enjoy our trips to the house monthly to enjoy our ping pong table, the Direct TV Satellite on three TVs and Hydro tub for two in the master bathroom. The view is always changing with each day.
Maybe we will rent again in years to come.
Cynthia or Daniel Schanink purchased this house in 2001
We fell in love here and the memories are sweet on Mount Nebo with lots of out door activities, like watching wild life to feed corn and to photograph. No hunting allowed in this beautiful park. Hang gliders launch from next door and sore above the house. Hike eight different trails that lead to springs to bring youth to any who soak their feet, as legend tells by the locals. My first trip to Mount Nebo was in my 1968 British Leyland MBG with its low profile. I enjoyed all the turns in the road. I had just graduated from Russellville High School in 1974 and thought to myself, how could anyone afford to build big houses up here, in the state park, as I passed the Summit House on my way to ‘Sunset Point’. Now that we own the exact house and I know that the bank loan has a lot to do with the purchase. My husband Daniel and I have celebrated our 37 wedding anniversary here and look forward to more.
Pride of ownership brings us to renovations and the first thing we had to do was change the siding from cedar to vinyl then we changed the windows and doors from aluminum to double pane and hinged. All the interior walls were painted or replaced by sheet rock with acrylic murals or Arkansas cedar and the interior doors are new. The flooring on the main floor is now porcelain tiled and the kitchen has new Formica counters. There is a new garbage disposal, dish washer and faucet in the kitchen.
Arriving on top of the mountain there is a wonderful clean clear breeze as the temperature changes about 10 degrees from the valley. This house has a very big living room for any even you want to celebrate.
My favorite place to be is the Summit House with enough room to enjoy my watercolor painting indoors or out. I can give your group a private watercolor art class for $240 with materials I provide and I also teach my annual watercolor plain air workshop class here with all the stored extra tables and chairs. I always have the best view from the house and enough room for any other activity that might come up like weddings and family reunions with all the sitting areas and beautiful views. This four bedroom house is in the state park with trails going to six different springs. The children have many games to choose from. I like to see Hang gliding from behind the visitors center next door and star gazing from our bedroom deck here. Our house rental cost less with more square feet for the money, than any other comparable property.
For many years my family has been coming here to enjoy each others company, catch up, reminanince, play music and have an auction. There are 3 generations from different life styles sharing this beautiful house, we have lots of room to share and I like the newly updated kitchen with all the appliances to cook and serve food with.
We have been coming to Mt Nebo every year for the last 3 years and love it! We have stayed at several cabins up there and we just truly love this one for our large extended family to all come up here and get to stay in one house together. The kids have a great time hiking and playing and the adult relax and unwind we made so many memories here! We couldn't ask for a better place to come and relax at the end of the day! It was so wonderful for you to share this with us! Everything was clean and cozy!
For many years my family has come here to enjoy each others company, catch up, to play music, have an auction and reminisce in memories. There are three generations to share their experiences in life. We all come from different life styles yet we all feel at home here every time we gather at the Summit House which is clean with beds made and clean towels under the sinks. We are proud to continue this yearly reunion tradition and can only hope that other families can let go of their busy lives for a week to do the same with their dear families.
We also had a daughter get married at sunset point with a beautiful reception in this big living room of 60 feet long. They even provided the tables that fold up and store out of the way in the game room. We found silver trays and a punch bowl to serve the food we brought and didn't pay high prices for a catering service.
This view is priceless and free to all that come to the Mount Nebo state park but we stay the night and watch the spectacular sunrise before any one else sees it in Arkansas.
The Mount Nebo trails are every where and clearly marked to find your way home after we fine geo'cache.sites on each trail we take. Now this bonus is like treasure hunting. We hope to continue this tradition for years.
Every year our extended family of 20 plus meet over the Martin Luther King Holiday. We have stayed in several different places the past few years in Northern/Central Arkansas. The Summit House tops them all. There was plenty of room for the kids, young adults and older adults to gather without being on top of each other. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking for the large group. The state park and trails provided endless entertainment for the group for hikes and site seeing. The view from the house were amazing, overlooking the river and town. We saw deer, birds, a flock of pelicans in the river and even a road runner. We will definitely return to the Summit House in the near future. The owners were great to personally answer questions before we got there. Fantastic weekend-wish we could have stayed longer.
This was the best experience I've ever had. Our family stayed at The Summit House for my son's wedding at the nearby Pavilion. We could not have had a better time. What a beautiful house furnished and adorned with wonderful paintings throughout. A view to die for and a bed I never wanted to leave. Couldn't have asked for more. Just loved it.
Large group of my friends and I descended on Mt. Nebo for an extended weekend of fun. This home was PERFECT....very clean, very comfortable, lots of beds and bedrooms... and a view that you can't believe!!! There were deer in the yard each evening, the spring flowers were just starting to emerge and we had a wonderful time.
We loved our stay at the Summit House! Lots of space, very comfortable, beautiful views - couldn't ask for anything more. We hiked and hiked, played golf, relaxed, visited the Visitors Center (many times! very helpful), watched the sun rise at Sunrise Point and sunset at Sunset Point (very close). The drive up the mountain was always very entertaining for the kids - 2 miles, straight up...15 switchbacks. We'll be back for sure!
We have the best view at all times of the day. Fun for your family vacation with a large game room. Free entry to this state park with three play grounds, 14 miles of Hiking Trails that lead to six springs, two free tennis courts, summer water slide pool in state park only $4 per day per person 60 persons max per day. In the park there are basket ball hoops, Lake Dardanelle boating below mountain, Hang-gliding (Class 3 minimum). I can teach a daily Watercolor class $240 with materials provided for up to ten in your group each person has a painting competed, best souvinior from your stay at this famous mountain class by owner Cynthia please book before arrival.
The air is so clean and clear up above the river valley, that you never want to go back home. The visitors center has a few groceries, souviniors and bike rides, a bag of corn mix is one dollar to feed the deer that will arrive daily to graze on the grass. Walmart is only seven miles away in Dardanelle with 50# bag of corn. I have seen many herds of deer all over the park. Please remember you may Photograph but No Hunting is Allowed. I would see and hear them in the woods on our walks. Take a hiking on a different trail per day....just to see the six springs of cold water..that is kinda cool too. If is gets a little dark walk up to the road for part of the walk back to the Summit House because the road is always near the trails.

I had just graduated from Russellville High School in 1974 and thought to myself, how could anyone afford to build big houses up here, in the state park, as I passed the Summit House on my way to ‘Sunset Point’. Now fourteen years later we have made big improvements and enjoy our trips to the house to check on the yard and quality of cleaning from our service provider, new ping pong table with equipment, we have Direct TV Satellite reception and a Hydro tub in the master bedroom.
Pride of ownership brings us to renovations and the first thing we had to do was change the siding from cedar to vinyl, then we changed the windows and doors from aluminum to double pane and hinged. All the interior walls were painted or replaced by sheet rock with acrylic murals or Arkansas cedar boards and the interior doors were replaced. The flooring on the main floor is now porcelain tile and the kitchen has new Formica counters that look like granite. There is a new garbage disposal, dish washer and faucet in the kitchen.
Arriving on top of the mountain there is a wonderful clean clear breeze as the temperature changes about 10 degrees from the 1800 ft elevation.
Evening is a great time to be outdoors; we usually go to Sunset Point to enjoy watching the sunset, then the stars show up and the moon rises over head. We head home to our Summit House for dinner then sit on the porch swing sipping a glass of wine while, deer and an armadillo come across the yard in front of us. We pose no threat and enjoy their presence. Then the lights are coming on in the houses of Dardanelle, Delaware and Russellville so beautiful to sit in the double swing and watch them, but we can also see the lights of Greenbriar and Clarksville.
After a tranquil sleep I rise to make coffee and find Fox News on the TV. As the sun rises from the east I watch from my chair the different layers of clouds it passes through and I’m grateful to be the first person in Arkansas to see the sunrise over the horizon, since I am so high up above the Arkansas River Valley.
Now for a hike around the Rim Trail which is my favorite with its majestic views and towering rocks and trees bent over from windy storms that have passed by. Six short trails to the springs offer short cuts to the Bench trail which is a level roadway from days gone by when houses were built one hundred years ago but they burned in the 1920’s when a fire swept through to end a decade of grander times. I have found old stone chimneys, foundations and wells near the trails. All the seasons are wonderful, in the Spring you see the dogwood trees bloom, in summer you see the baby fawns birthed by does, fall the fuzzy spikes come on the yearlings and winter trees shed the leaves to give the grand view of the valley laying out below.
During our visit to the Summit House, practically every waking moment is spent enjoying this wonderful place, indoors and out. Recycling is a must here at our vacation rental. We need your help to keep trash recycle in order. Please put aluminum cans no foil or tin in the marked trash can.
Break down all boxes and make a stack by the trash cans.
Unrecyclable trash should be bagged and put in the three unmarked trash cans. If you have more trash take it with you, we host weddings and do not need extra nonrecycled trash.
