This elegant home from 1930 commands a 360 acre property. Large lawns and side veranda allow magnificent views of mountains on all sides. Beautiful trees and perennials bloom through spring and summer and fall foliage is unparalleled! A pool, small pond, and brook grace the property. Miles of trails on the property and the adjacent 100's of acres of conservation land. Setting invites you outdoors. Over 5,000 square foot house has oak and marble floors, beautiful details and many built in cabinets and bookcases. Full kitchen has 2 refrigerators, stove top, oven, and dishwasher. Laundry room with washer and dryer. Formal dining room. Comfortable family room with DirectTV. Internet access. Outstanding hiking, cross country skiing and road and mountain biking. Relax in the 40 foot pool. Fish and tube in the nearby Battenkill River. Enjoy the countryside at home and dine and shop in nearby Manchester or Bennington VT or Cambridge NY.
We stayed here the last week in August for my son's wedding (which was held at the West Mountain Inn). We could not have chosen a more wonderful setting. The house is absolutely lovely and perfectly equipped for guests. The views of the huge property are terrific, especially when sitting on the flagstone terrace. There is enough room for everyone to spread out and relax. The kitchen and dining room are great for entertaining, although we had most of our meals on the terrace, which has a great table and chairs and a large umbrella. The pool was sparkling clean and we enjoyed it every day. Larry the caretaker was also terrific. Available when needed, but respectful of guests' privacy. Every day was a dream, right down to the ripe apples in the yard. Peace, quiet and true beauty. We will be back soon. Thanks to Anca for sharing her home with us.
Nearby, there is tubing/kyaking in the Battenkill river, plenty of little shops to buy fresh Vermont products (local maple syrup, yummy), and go exploring. Drives through the area beautiful, with plenty of photo opps. The covered bridge is (one of the last in the NE) just 5 minutes away. While it is always a good idea to support the local economy when you visit somewhere, you can stock up up on food before you go and use the two refrigerators and plenty of cabinets for food storage.
Bromely mounain should be worth a day trip for an Alpine slide/zip line adventure the kids (and adults) won't soon forget. There were plenty of places we did not stop to visit, many sights left unseen, mainly because the property is so wonderful that you want to just stay on it. Being from the city, we were worried about the wild animals, ticks and mosquitoes. We saw a few deer, a few rabbits, and chipmunks. At night we heard, but never saw coyotes, and did not see any bear. After frequent and daily "tick checks" we did not find even one all week. We had plenty of repellant for the mosquitoes, but there were practically none. The bug spray was applied only when hiking and the insects seemed to keep to themselves; a pleasant surprise indeed! The tiki torches workes their magic at night, but there are more insects, ticks, deer and bear in Northern NJ, Eastern Long Island, and Norhtwest CT from my experience.
Some advice: bring walkie talkies. The property is huge and there is no cell service so walkie talkies were an item i would have liked to have had with us.
This was a perfect place for us. If you want to really get away for a while, this is the place. You do not have to be a mountain climber, a cowboy, or a farmer. You just have to love the trees, the mountains and a great big old house stuffed in the middle. You need to enjoy eating and spending time with your family, sitting by the fire pit at night while someone strums a guitar, and enjoying unorganized talent shows. Hiking through fairly easy trails, exploring the woods, taking a dip in the cool pool. Quiet early morning drive to the country store for some more eggs, and a starlit sky at night that makes you feel like you are in a planetarium. It is amazing that this property has not been broken into peices and sold off, and i for one enjoyed what is truly a rare getaway. The only hesitancy in posting this review is that i felt i would be giving away a secret hiding place. We loved it.
Let me start by pointing out how rare a property like this is in the Northeast. 350+ acres nestled right in the Green Mountains! This is an expansive property that you will need to come back to for years to explore. There are many hiking trails with clean and wide trailways; just perfect for a large family excursion to any one of the surrounding peaks. One peak in particular was pointed out by Larry (the caretaker, thanks Larry!) which offered a view to the large house and open fields surrounding it. The children thought it looked like a dollhouse from that peak, and it was a great reward for their first real hike ever. The pictures do not tell even a fraction of the story. The house is large and comfortable with many bathrooms and plenty of space for a large family. The kids as well as the adults had plenty of space to run, play explore, sleep, read and eat together. The kitchen was large, comfortable and extremely convenient for food preperation and cooking large meals. There is a room for everyone here, plenty of places to escape for some quiet time both in and outdoors. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the beds were a joy to sleep in, and we were stunned that for an old house, it makes no noise when everyone is milling around. The phrase "they don't bulid them like they used to." would definitely apply here.
On the outside patio, the grill was fired up every night, and with the exception of one rainy night we ate outside. There are two tables and plenty of chairs outside for a large family, and our "adopted" chipmunk seemed to enjoy the company. The pool is large and enjoyable once the sun warmed it enough for the kids, and we had plenty of swimming time. The pool was clean and well kept, and part of the reason for the kids to not want to leave the property at all for the entire week.
The owner were great, very attentive, and certainly not in our hair all week. They gave us the room to really enjoy ourselves and the place felt like it belonged to us for the whole stay. I really appreciated the privacy, but Larry being a helpful phone call away. They provided us with everthing we needed and a little extra.
I enjoyed having internet service there to do some work when needed, and very much enjoyed having no cellphone service. The blackberry was traded for mulberries and bluberries (also at the top of the peak) and it was great.

We spent an amazing week at this house in July. If you are looking for good clean fun and plenty of nature about you, this is the place for you. The views are breath taking, the air is clean, and there is plenty to do if you love the outdoors. The home is older and very spacious if you are traveling with a large party, such as two families vacationing together. I would recommend this property to anyone who enjoys nature and wildlife. This is not for people who need constant entertainment such as a movie theater and shopping. If you love to read and enjoy peace and quiet this works out very well. There is also a large pool and our children loved this very much. There is plenty to do in Vermont about 20 minutes away from the property. It's best if you food shop prior to your arrival since a real food store is quite far, about 30 minutes away. There is however a quaint little country store about 10 minutes away from the property that is adequate if you need something quick. (the wayside) You are only 40 minutes from the Vermont Country Store, should you want to venture there. It's located in a very cute town (weston) and there was plenty to do and see there.
We are planning on renting this property again, the owner and caretaker are very attentive to your questions and needs. We would rate this property a 10 out of 10.
This area is wooded with miles and miles of trails and magnificent mountain views. Chunks Brook runs through the property and it is very near the Battenkill River with fishing, tubing and canoeing. Cross country skiing, bicycle riding and hiking paradise. Near historic Arlington, Bennington and Manchester VT with many unique restaurants and shops.
Other Activities: cross country skiing, tubing
