About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3-5)

Come home to the old-time mountain cabin of your dreams -- a rustic, 1950s-era Grand Lake cabin rental with all the comforts of modern life, just minutes from Rocky Mountain National Park! This little slice of heaven offers stellar views of Park peaks and Shadow Mountain Lake from the large great room picture window and the huge wrap-around deck (which more than suffice for the purposeful lack of TV). Every day from this Grand Lake cabin vacation rental you'll see elk, moose, foxes, and more wildlife right out the front door! A fine and growing aspen grove greets you in the front yard. Inside and out, it's clean, peaceful, romantic, cozy and inviting -- it's all that and more!

This cute-as-all-get-out Grand Lake cabin rental has pinewood interior with an 11-foot-tall pitched ceiling with open beams, wood-burning stove and natural stone fireplace. It's truly a classic cabin with warm wood ambiance -- you'll love playing board games and reading or flat lazing away the day by the fire inside, but the outdoors are the finest playground in the Rockies. Master bedroom with queen bed (sleeps 2). In main room is the Murphy bed (sleeps 2), single bed, and short couch for naps or a child. There is NO clothes washer or dryer, nor dishwasher. No smoking indoors please. Nice campfire pit. All firewood is provided for free. Get in here! A wonderful time awaits you when you rent this Grand Lake cabin.

Guests have remarked that this humble yet sweet mountain cabin is the best vacation value west of the Mississippi, and certainly this side of the Great Divide. You'll cherish our authentic mountain retreat when you rent this Grand Lake cabin. Check out the reviews below. Some of our favorite comments from the guest registry:

“Thanks for making an affordable vacation in the Rockies possible.”

“Wow, what a beautiful cabin! Cooked in both nights, could hardly leave the peace and quietness of this wonderful cabin.”

“We felt at home as soon as we walked in the front door!”

“Doggies love it here.”

“You have a wonderful cabin -- the best we've found so far: comfortable (especially the bed) and warm and cabin-y!”

“We loved waking up to that view!”

“What a wonderful quiet mountain retreat! We thoroughly enjoyed being here -- the sky chair (we had to take turns!), your great assortment of board games, no TV or clock (hurray! thank you!), your clean and cozy cabin and fun fire pit.”

“We'll never forget the incredible wildlife, including the huge bull moose we saw while out for a walk and the red fox right outside the back door!”

The happy cabin lies just about two miles from the quaint Western town of Grand Lake - a wonderful town on the largest natural lake in Colorado that's great for couples and families. Walk (in winter, cross-country ski) out the cabin door to the lake or to the North Fork of the Colorado River. The dirt roads all around the cabin are great for dog walks, sweet views of the mountains and lakes and scattering of cabins and second homes.

In winter, Grand Lake is the self-proclaimed Snowmobile Capital of Colorado. Cross-country ski or snowshoe in the Park, or the Grand Lake nordic track (doubles as golf course in summer), drive 20 minutes to Sol Vista Ski Area, 25 minutes to Nordic ski areas, or 35 minutes to Winter Park and Mary Jane world-class downhill ski areas.

Arrival time: After 4pm.

Departure time: By 10am.

About Todd Runestad & Stephanie Ball

While Todd been the typical Colorado guy who climbs mountains, Steph stops along the trail to smell the flowers and not overlook the way the sun sparkles through the aspen leaves. Our two young daughters go one better, stopping the both of us to point out worms and bugs along the trail.

Todd Runestad & Stephanie Ball purchased this cabin in 1999

Why Todd Runestad & Stephanie Ball chose Grand Lake

Upon getting married in 1997, we searched the mountains of Colorado far and wide for our little slice of heaven. Our agreement (second of the summer!) was that the place had to 'sing' to the both of us. We figured we'd find a few acres and, someday, build an A-frame on it. In the third summer of our search, Steph overheard an office-mate talk about their Grand Lake cabin they were looking to sell. We headed up to look at it. We walked up the steps and opened the front door to look inside. At the same second, we both said, 'Wow!' It was just what we were looking for -- charming, rustic, cozy, classic old-time mountain cabin. Sold! Total bonus that the town of Grand Lake is just as sweet a mountain town as you can ask for. Double-bonus that it's utterly kid-friendly, which works for our two girls just fine. Triple-bonus that the views from the cabin are into Rocky Mountain National Park.

What makes this cabin unique

In the time BC (Before Children) we would spend most weekends up at the cabin, and more often than not doing what might be described as exactly nothing. In winter months we'd sit in rocking chairs, feeding the wood stove, reading newspapers, magazines and books, watching the clouds float by above the lake and over the mountains of the park. We like to keep a look out the window or from the deck for elk and moose and foxes that live in the area -- never fails to excite. We like to play board games, from Monopoly and Battleship to Twister and backgammon, and take walks right out the door on the dirt roads over to the North Fork of the Colorado River or just around the area. Good fun mountain biking, too. Our dogs ('the boys') love the area, probably as much as we do -- and, with wild fragrances all around, maybe more!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Mud season" was perfect for Hot Sulphur Springs - cool and cloudy but no snow to get cold feet between pools.

Walking the dog around these dirt roads - good smells!

Cabin invites relaxation. We're playing lots of games - Mouse Trap, backgammon, Princess. Great fire in the wood-burning stove!

We spent the day at Hot Suphur Springs. Amazing hot tubs and some body work/facials. I would highly recommend this place fora visit.

We so needed a retreat and we received it and so much more. The love truly radiates from the walls.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to stay here in your cabin and explore Grand Lake and all your wonderful recommendations for dog hikes and food.

Thank you for welcoming our dogs as it makes it even more special to have the furry companions with us in a very cozy setting with a real log cabin feel. Gives us a real mountain experience!

Woof! Woof! Woof! -- The Girls

Had a very enjoyable first visit. Snowshoeing, snowmobiling and relaxing by the fire. Can't wait 'til next time!

It's amazing how much wildlife's here! We saw a black bear across the road. We went kayaking, and the cabin was rustically furnished. We loved it.

Saw moose on the front step the first day. Also saw our first bear in Rocky Mountain National Park. Quiet and comfortable. Enjoyed no TV and the radio.

The stars at night and a roaring fire in the hearth were the highlights of a great couple of days.

Late October:

Woodsmoke, pines,

sun falling on aspens --

their pale, naked boies,

birds darting in low branches,

the hills thick

with golden underbrush

gathered like fists

against the wind

against the brilliant snow

making its careful

irrevocable way

down the mountain.

Thank you so much for the use of your adorably cozy, romantic cabin.

Thank you for the amazing cabin! The views were incredible. It was one of our most relaxing vacations ever.

Ran into a couple moose at Pine Beach picnic grounds. Thanks for the hiking tips. Love this lil' cabin.

Comfortable, cozy cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Three of my friends and I had a very comfortable stay here over Memorial Day weekend. You cannot beat the location -- 4 miles from Rocky Mountain NP and just down the road from the wonderful little village of Grand Lake. My favorite parts about the cabin are the large, spacious living / dining area that included a small bed and Murphy bed for sleeping. There are plenty of clean linens provided and lots of firewood, if you are interested in having a fireplace fire. There is an outdoor firepit, but it was not very inviting, though, I think with a little rework, that could be a great feature of this place. Regardless, it was not really necessary and everything else was so great, that that was nothing to be considered. The bathroom is "cozy" too, and the water pressure and temperature were great. We rotated showers (two in evening, two in morning) simply because we weren't sure if the hot water heater could keep up. Doing that, we had no issues. (Might not have even if we didn't, but better wait than have a cold shower!) Communication was clear with the owners, and they leave some helpful notes in the cabin and provided a lot of detail in advance. We didn't see any wildlife at the cabin, and the neighborhood was more populated than I expected, but it was safe, generally quiet and just a short walk from Pine Beach, where we walked for some wildlife viewing. Didn't see any big animals, but did see several hummingbirds, osprey and waterfowl. Had a great stay at this cabin, and felt the value was exceptional considering the timing of our stay and the location! Highly recommend.

Nice clean cabin in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here a few days for our anniversary. The place was clean and in a nice neighborhood. The bathroom and kitchen are both quite small but were fine for our short stay.

Just as promised, a quiet, comfy cabin by the lake

  • 5 of 5

Upon arrival, the owner welcomed me and provided additional info about the area and the cabin. Everything was clean and tidy, easily accessable, and well stocked with amenities. Overall, this location is ideal and everything I expected. The owner made me feel right at home and went above and beyond the call of duty. Highly recommend this place!

great cabin but needs some work

  • 4 of 5

i did this once but i will do it again. the cabin was very charming and cute. however there are some things that need attention. the amenities in the ad said there was a washer and dryer. none was found, unless they were in back of the garage which was impossible to get to. the outdoor firepit was a mess with a chair over top of it and wood strewn all over. i would have been afraid to light a fire. the instructions to turn on the gas were incorrect. it said to turn the knob in back of the stove so its perpendicular to the wall. it was already perpendicular to wall,(in the off position). it must be turned 1/4 turn so its parallel to the wall. then the gas stove can be lit. it was pretty clean. just a little effort, time and energy could make this truly a great vacation spot. again it was a very nice stay and definitely a cozy, classic mountain cabin. I would also add a radio for weather reports if nothing else.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. I checked and it's true, the amenities on the page lists "Washer & Dryer" and I don't know why - or how to delete that. There are details on the page that say, "NO washing machine. But there's a Laundromat in downtown Grand Lake, on the left." Sorry for the mix-up, and apologies for the glitch. The outdoor fire pit in April may well have been a mess, and I can only attribute that to it being the tail end of winter and the fire pit was covered by snow for many months. We did a nice spring cleaning of the fire pit and the garage (not the place you really want to hang out in anyway except to collect firewood) and it's all better now :)

Cozy little Cabin in a Great Location

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was perfect for me, my wife, and our two little dogs. We could go on walks around the property, or drive a short distance to hikes. We visited the hot springs, hiked Monarch lake, and enjoyed some time in downtown Grand Lake. Afterwards, we could relax in the cabin next to the fireplace. Perfect weekend getaway.

cozy cabin get away

  • 5 of 5

We loved discovering Grand Lake from this cozy cabin. The cabin felt spacious for our group of 3 plus one dog. The deck was great for sunning, the large picture window by the dining table was great for taking in the view, and the day bed was perfect for relaxing. We made s'mores in the fireplace every night. The wifi worked perfectly. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. The whole place felt unfussy and family friendly, just as we hoped for. The location, just 5 minutes outside of town, gave us access to tons of great hiking and lakefront exploring. Thanks so much to the owners for making their place dog friendly, and for all the local suggestions.
