Why Mary Jane Gagnier chose Centro
The Casa Murguia property is over 10,000 sq. feet with a quiet protected inner courtyard that was large enough to construct a proper pool for swimming laps. Add to this a classic 50´s style Mexico bungalow design with a view of the Sierra Juarez mountains made the decision to buy an easy one. With so much space we were able to plant gardens rich in native plants that give privacy between the different patios. The house was an easy 3 block walk to the absolute heart of the historic center.
What makes this Bungalow unique
Casa Murguia is located 6 blocks from the Zocalo, Santo Domingo and from the great little Merced market, and even though it is in the heart of the center because of the trees it is very quiet. It is constructed with adobe and stays nice and cool year round. The spacious patios are perfect for outdoor living in Oaxaca's perfect climate. The 75 ft two-lane pool was designed for swimming laps yet still fun to play in, fish designs in mosaic tile decorate the floor of the pool.

Amazing oasis in central Oaxaca
We had such a lovely time in Mary Jane's apartment. The location is perfect, very central. Even though it is a somewhat busy area, you could barely hear anything once you were inside the complex. The pool is even more lovely than it looks in the pictures. The beds were comfortable, the shower had good pressure. The kitchen was very well stocked and they provided a few snacks and unlimited purified drinking water. Maria Antonia, who stays on the premises during the day, is such a lovely person. And even though it's not a hotel she cleaned every day. We came with two young children and it was great for all of us. Highly recommended!
So glad you enjoyed your stay at Casa Murguia. I've tried to create a vacation lodging experience that I, myself, would like to rent while travelling - the service of a hotel with daily housekeeping 6 days a week but the space of a proper condominium. Maria Antonia is a wonderful housekeeper & property manager; she has worked at Casa Murguia for 17 years and is absolutely trustworthy.
Mary Jane and her staff go out of their way to make guests feel welcome and comfortable. Our stay was exceptional. Location could not be better, in the heart of the city but on a relatively quiet block. We had no concerns with noise. One of the few options in the city center with a pool. Because there are only a handful of units you will never feel crowded or have to fight for space around/in the pool. Highly recommend this property to anyone looking to explore downtown Oaxaca and all that this amazing city has to offer. In my opinion the VRBO website pictures don't quite do it justice - our unit was much more spacious and comfortably appointed than the pictures led me to believe.
I think it's preferable to find a rental even better in "real life" than in the photos. I will though update with some new photos, especially now when the native white and pink Plumeria trees are blooming.
The city of Oaxaca and the central valleys that surround it take lifetimes to fully explore. I hope you'll return.
Great accommodation in a perfect location
We had a wonderful stay at Casa Murguia and would highly recommend it. My partner and I stayed here with our 10 month old son and they provided us with a travel crib and a highchair. The small kitchen was setup well so that we could cook him meals. It was hard to keep the room dark for his naps, but it’s something that he was able to get used to. It was great to have the pool so that we could cool him off midday and it usually had a shaded part so we could keep him out of the sun. It was nice to be able to eat outside on the patio, which felt private because of all the plants. They owner and staff were very friendly and helpful when we had questions or needed to book a taxi. The location is close to the Zocolo, the walking street, and so many good restaurants. We walked everywhere. Really glad we found this place and would recommend to anyone visiting Oaxaca.
Especially when travelling with children it is nice to have a kitchen and living areas separate from the bedroom. The climate in Oaxaca is prefect for outdoor living. So glad to know you enjoyed your stay at Casa Murguia. We could have provided you with some kind of impromptu blackout curtains had we known.
Another day in paradise
This is indeed my home away from home: I’ve rented the same apartment (one of five in the cpmplex) for several years, and it now my favorite, although all are nice. It’s physically beautiful; apartments are grouped around a courtyard planted with palms, cacti and other native plants, with a pool in the center. It’s quiet, central to the historic downtown of Oaxaca and near to lots of good restaurants.
Casa Murguia is located on the eastern edge of the historic centre, making it just a few blocks from the main artery yet just removed by several blocks from the occasionally overwhelming hubbub. So glad to know Casa Murguia has become your home-away-from-home.
A Splendid, Quiet Oasis In The Heart Of Old Colonial Oaxaca
Casa Murguia is located near the centre of Old Colonial Oaxaca.
It is an excellent base for exploring the city and provides a quiet large, secluded garden with pool as a refuge between forays.
There are generous furnished spaces adjacent to each well equipped unit for quiet relaxation in the sun.
The rooms and the overall complex are maintained in immaculate condition by the very conscientious staff.
The descriptions in the web site can be relied upon.
Indeed, Oaxaca is one of the world's great walking cities and a bonus staying at Casa Murguia is exploring the historic centre on foot. The lush Merced food market, just a few blocks away, offers perfectly ripe avocados, Oaxaca's famed string cheese (Quesillo ) and fresh corn tostadas. Pick up a bottle of wine or icy cold Mexican beer just a block away and enjoy perfect outdoor living on a private poolside patio.
The Perfect Place to Stay in Oaxaca
The absolutely perfect place to stay in Oaxaca - in the center of everything - the zocolo, banks, museums, churches and cathedrals, the best restaurants in Oaxaca - all within a few blocks walk. Magnificent, charming, casa, filled with authentic Mexican folk art, in the traditional style of "bungalows" around a central courtyard with tile lap pool. Private, quiet, safe, charming, welcoming & comfortable - this is "Old World Oaxaca"
And you should know after how many visits? Oaxaca stands up to repeated visits. In the last few years the city is sailing high on culinary creativity and high quality mezcal production.
The 25-meter long swimming pool boosts brand new, highly effective solar heating panels making the pool absolutely "swim-able" all year round.
