This house is incredibly centrally located yet is also in a most peaceful spot, set back from a quiet street with a bicycle lane.
Within a radius of less two and a half blocks you will find the Library of Congress, a Metro station, Eastern Market, a Starbucks, and at the time of writing ten restaurants. The National Mall, around which the Smithsonian museums are clustered, is only a short walk away. The house has a Zillow walkability rating of 95 ('Walkers Paradise.') A rack of bright red public bicycles is half a block from your door.
The Yellow House is ideal for a family with children who would like to visit sites such as the Smithsonian museums, the US Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, the Library of Congress, or the Newseum, among many others. Our neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is a historical conservation area that is quaint, cosmopolitan, affluent, and highly secure. We are so close to the US Capitol that the house is inside the perimeter patrolled by Capitol security. The neighborhood is where most members of congress live.
The house comes with a little shopping cart, which you can take to the grocery store around the corner, or two blocks to Eastern Market, a wonderful 140 year old traditional market where greengrocers, butchers, bakers, etc. carry the absolute freshest groceries you will find anywhere in the city. Walking your shopping cart to Eastern Market, nobody will suspect you are a tourist.
Visitors who arrive by car typically park it for the duration of their stay. The house includes a parking permit.
Your rental comes with all linens, towels, a blow drier, high quality toiletries, and propane for the grill. All you need to bring is a tooth brush!

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?
Alec Smyth purchased this house in 2009
The Yellow House is on a quiet street, yet so close to the US Capitol that it is within the perimeter patrolled by the Capitol security, within the area that is sealed off for Presidential inaugurations, etc. Most vacation rentals advertise proximity to Metro. We are two blocks from Metro, but chances are you will not take it because you are already so close to the major sites of interest.
The house itself is much wider than the rowhouses typical of the neighborhood, and has an open floor plan. These features translate to a bright ambiance full of natural light. Please notice also what you see through the windows in the listing photos - trees!
There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.
We had such a great time we did not want to leave! Your home was really wonderful and we will definitely contact you again next time we come to DC. Quick question – do you know what the mattress was on the king bed? We found it to be really comfortable. Thanks again!
My family had the best stay in the Yellow House this past week... It's a beautiful place to come home to, even more beautiful than the great photos online! Everything was clean and well maintained, and owner was helpful with questions prior to our arrival. It was a treat to stay in a place that was quiet and safe, yet also close to the sites of Capitol Hill and many small restaurants. We would like to come back to enjoy more of the same, but also to see the front and back gardens when things are in bloom. Book a stay yourself if you are lucky enough to see availability left for your dates of travel!
Our family of five loved the Yellow House as our home-base in DC. Close to bus and metro routes, we got around quickly and easily which made for plenty of time at the Smithsonian, National Mall, etc. We rented bikes when our feet needed a break from walking, and the neighborhood seemed to open up to us--so friendly for bikes! Nearby restaurants provided great food and the proximity of a bodega, well-stocked liquor/wine shop, and nearby grocery made our stay feel like home. The house has a wonderful, woody scent and was cozy and warm even with cold and rainy weather. The kitchen was thoughtfully supplied with everything we needed to make our own breakfasts and lunches, although we didn't make time to cook dinner during our stay. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat!
The yellow house was perfect for us and a fabulous location for all of DC's best attractions and food
Our family of 5 found this to be a very comfortable house for our D.C. vacation. There were not any surprises, the house is just like pictures. It was clean and well appointed. We liked having the kitchen for breakfast and snacks. The laundry is a necessity for our family and all worked well. We loved the location with the easy access to the metro and the restaurants in the area. We highly recommend this house for your trip to D.C.
My husband and I, along with our three kids, ages 6, 4, and 2, found the yellow house to be perfect for our family's trip to DC. The house was very well suited for young children; there was a full size crib set up for us in one bedroom, and the house was equipped with a booster chair for the dining table, full set of child-friendly dishes, and a baby gate at the top of the stairs.
The location was also very convenient for touring the museums. We were able to walk to the Air and Space Museum, with only the youngest child in a stroller, and we took the metro (Capitol South stop only a couple blocks away) to see other museums. The whole family was also able to walk to the Eastern Market, and we enjoyed having a few playgrounds nearby, too (there is an elementary school located right across the street, and the playground was open on the weekend). My husband and I were also able to easily walk to the restaurant row one evening for an adult dinner.
We felt very safe and would definitely stay in the yellow house again!
Ideal location for touring the capitol. Walking distance to major attractions. Parking pass a major plus. Restaurants a few short blocks away. Spacious and comfortable. Well maintained and clean. Friendly neighbors. Quiet street.
The house is located on a quiet friendly Capitoll Hill block with a park at each end, around the corner from Pennsylvania Avenue with its restaurants and sidewalk cafes. The Capitol, Library of Congress, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Metro (the underground) are all just a couple of blocks away. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs. The house is within the close-in perimeter of heightened security patrolled by the Washington Metropolitan Police, the US Capitol Police and the US Secret Service.
We recommend that visitors come without cars, because our location allows access to the sights on foot and by Metro. However, a free visitor parking permit is included in your rental just in case.
Other Activities: US Capitol, Smithsonian Museums, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, National Archives, Newseum, Folger Shakespeare
