About Tom Hardwick

Our family's moved to Alaska in the early 70's. We moved here for the Alaskan Experience. During our pursuit of that experience the family became involved in staking out Alaskan Open-Entry land and taking advantage of public land auctions. The land this cabin sets on was purchased at auction. Our family grew up on this property and the 5 acres next door. Our children were raised here on weekends and summers at the cabin. We have built and re-built generator systems and installed off-grid electrical systems that now allow the cabins to be enjoyed year round. We have fished the lake extensively in winter and summer... we really know where to catch the Pike that dominate Amber Lake. We've explored the surrounding area in summer and winter for the past 20 years and can tell you where to go for a great experience all year round. We even found the submerged island in the middle of the lake. Let us show you where it is the next time you come to Amber Cove Cabin.

Tom Hardwick purchased this house in 2009

Why Tom Hardwick chose Trapper Creek

My mother purchased this property at a Alaska State Land Auction, site unseen in 1973 when Amber Lake was a fly-in only lake property. Ten years later the road was pushed back to Amber Lake. We then made our first ATV adventure to Amber Lake. This property took our breath away and soon we began building our first cabin. After almost 15 years of week-ends and summers at the cabin and 100's of repeat guests we finished our second cabin on the adjacent lot. We are very proud of our NEW cabin, because it boasts all the things we did correctly when building and furnishing the first cabin. We think Amber Cove Cabin will give our guests the best cabin experience ever.

What makes this house unique

Amber Lake is a semi-remote recreation area with fantastic Pike fishing-- nearby streams and lakes offer some of Alaska's finest Salmon, Trout, & Pike fishing. It is less than 20 minutes from Petersville road recreation area. Petersville recreation area is located near the south end of Denali National Park with extensive ATV and snow machine trails. There are also 100's of miles of trails directly from the cabin. Amber Lake is a 2 mile long lake and is perfect for a full spectrum of water sports and winter sports. Float planes often fly in to Amber Lake from Anchorage. Air taxi service can be arranged.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for providing such a lovely cabin, stocked with so many amenities. We so enjoyed the cozy indoor activities during the soggy weather and ALL the lake fun and outdoor activities during the sunshine! Sadly, no fish or bear sightings, but the crystal clear view of Denali, a real treat!

We could not have asked for a nicer getaway as a family... just perfect!

God Bless,

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a peaceful lake experience this is a perfect location. The lake is quiet and calm offering amazing views of the sky. If you are fortunate to hit it on warm days the swimming is refreshing. There is plenty of nice water equipment to use and the outdoor patio offers wonderful lake views. The cabin has everything you could imagine needing and is very spacious and roomy so great for our family of four or for larger groups. The cabin is isolated down a dirt road so a great place to go if you want to get away. If you are thinking of day tripping to Denali or further north from here you should be mindful of the distance of travel. We definitely loved our stay here but something to note about this VRBO is that there are caretakers who oversee this property and although extremely lovely folks there is an engagement with them that was different then other VRBO we have experienced. So I think it is good to know that it is a package deal. Lastly we did not see this anywhere in the posting prior to renting but once arrived noted in the visitor book that there was a recommended 15% gratuity for the caretakers.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, the uniqueness of this off grid property is one that requires more personal effort for our care takers and shows with the personal attention to the needs of our guests we feel very fortunate to have the local knowledge and caring treatment of all who visit our property. The semi remote quietness is unique to our area and offers a respite from the harried pace of seeing all you can of the vastness of Alaska. We appreciate all our guests who recognize the time and attention invested to make their stay comfortable and informed of the current events and activities in the area.

Delightful off-grid property with all the amenities of home!!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful location, my family has spent time on the Kenai ( Girdwood, Homer) and were looking for something different. This delightful property was just perfect. Very private and intimate. We enjoyed exploring the local area of Trapper Creek and Amber Lake. Talkeetna was super cool, my 9 year old daughter even loved the place. Well she would love anyplace that had a cat as a former mayor.Well worth the drive from Anchorage, we are considering a fall or spring trip next time. This home has everything a family needs to have a cozy comfortable visit.

Wonderful secluded cabin on Amber Lake

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 7 women spent the first 8 days of our bucket list AL trip in Girdwood and surrounding areas. We decided that for our final 4 days, we just wanted some relaxing down time. This cabin was perfect! The cabin is equipped with everything it says. It was very clean and organized.

Unfortunately for us, it rained all but the last day we were there. But we were able to get out on the lake with the paddle boards, kayak, and paddle boat and had such a fun time. I can't imagine how great it would be when the weather is nice and able to do that everyday. Even got a little fishing in, caught one, but the BIG one got away!

We did go to Denali National park and as noted on previous reviews, it did take us about 2 1/2-3 hours to get there. We took the afternoon tour so we didn't have to leave real early. It does make for a long day, but since daylight is endless, it really wasn't that bad.

Just a couple of suggestions for future renters. Make sure you bring everything you need (food and condiments) because the first time down the 12 miles on Oilwell Rd took us 45 min to drive. Of course it was raining, but the road has a lot of pot holes. Hopefully it's a little better now because we saw a crew working on it the day we left. You just don't want to spend your time driving when you should be enjoying and relaxing here.

Second, bring lots of bug spray! I don't know if it was because it was raining, but the mosquitos were voracious. We had thought ahead, so we were ok.

Overall, this cabin was such a great quiet retreat. A wonderful place to get away and just enjoy!

Great time had by all

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed Christmas at the cabin, everything was well setup and stocked. Great sleeping arrangements and well stocked kitchen.

Our only suggestion would be to update/upgrade the satellite tuner and TV upstairs. They worked but would be much nicer in HD like downstairs.

Great place to get away

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for the first half of our honeymoon at the end of September and it was great! A perfect house for what we wanted. My husband loved being able to fish right from the backyard and I loved the swing! It's pretty secluded, do keep that in mind, but I would definitely recommend this place!

Beautiful cabin on Amber Lake

  • 4 of 5

This was a wonderful place to stay. The cabin was very comfortable and spacious. The kitchen was stocked with all the dishes, pots and pans and other equipment needed for cooking. There was fishing equipment, a sea kayak and a paddle boat that we used and completely enjoyed. We caught a total of 6 northerns. Wonderful and relaxing place to stay.
