About Tom Hardwick
Our family's moved to Alaska in the early 70's. We moved here for the Alaskan Experience. During our pursuit of that experience the family became involved in staking out Alaskan Open-Entry land and taking advantage of public land auctions. The land this cabin sets on was purchased at auction. Our family grew up on this property and the 5 acres next door. Our children were raised here on weekends and summers at the cabin. We have built and re-built generator systems and installed off-grid electrical systems that now allow the cabins to be enjoyed year round. We have fished the lake extensively in winter and summer... we really know where to catch the Pike that dominate Amber Lake. We've explored the surrounding area in summer and winter for the past 20 years and can tell you where to go for a great experience all year round. We even found the submerged island in the middle of the lake. Let us show you where it is the next time you come to Amber Cove Cabin.
Tom Hardwick purchased this House in 2009
Why Tom Hardwick chose Trapper Creek
My mother purchased this property at a Alaska State Land Auction, site unseen in 1973 when Amber Lake was a fly-in only lake property. Ten years later the road was pushed back to Amber Lake. We then made our first ATV adventure to Amber Lake. This property took our breath away and soon we began building our first cabin. After almost 15 years of week-ends and summers at the cabin and 100's of repeat guests we finished our second cabin on the adjacent lot. We are very proud of our NEW cabin, because it boasts all the things we did correctly when building and furnishing the first cabin. We think Amber Cove Cabin will give our guests the best cabin experience ever.
What makes this House unique
Amber Lake is a semi-remote recreation area with fantastic Pike fishing-- nearby streams and lakes offer some of Alaska's finest Salmon, Trout, & Pike fishing. It is less than 20 minutes from Petersville road recreation area. Petersville recreation area is located near the south end of Denali National Park with extensive ATV and snow machine trails. There are also 100's of miles of trails directly from the cabin. Amber Lake is a 2 mile long lake and is perfect for a full spectrum of water sports and winter sports. Float planes often fly in to Amber Lake from Anchorage. Air taxi service can be arranged.

We rented this property for 4 weeks and we were not disappointed. Perfect location to go to the various spots we wanted to check out. The property was clean and well maintained. Highly recommend.
We had a great time at this cabin. The property owner and property manager were outstanding and very easy to work with. Great views and magnificent sun downs with the tip of Denali in the background. If you want peace and quiet you'll find it here.
Thanks Ron, we try to provide a comfortable relaxing setting to recharge and enjoy what Alaska has to offer.
Time on the water
Our goal was to spend time at the lake & introduce the grand kids to boating and fishing. The cabin was cozy & perfect on a rainy morning. A good time was had by all. Thanks
Nice place to get away a little far out but the lake was beautiful and the cabin was well equipped , my kid really enjoyed the paddle boat and fishing. The caretakers were very sweet people
Beautiful Sunny Lake Fun
Views of Denali great family fun.
Amazing scenery, Comfortable cabin
Our family booked this property for 4 nights as part of a pre-cruise trip to explore more of Alaska and be a little closer to Denali. We loved every minute of it and have many friends that are interested in this trip now too.
Overall, we loved this time as the scenery is amazing and the lake is nice. The cabin is well maintained and comfortable and accommodated our party of 6 very well. Our family most appreciated the time on the lake, which was actually comfortably warm due to unseasonably high temps. The cabin included some fishing gear, a paddleboat, paddle board, and kayak which were constantly being used. We also enjoyed being able to sit at the table and play games while staring out over the lake. The cabin is nicely stocked for normal necessities and makes cooking very easy. "Dusk" is as dark as it gets and the "Midnight Sun" was fun to experience but sure throws your internal clock off! The cabin has room darkening shades but we found we either needed or wanted the windows open.
Our timing was poor as our first 2 days were 90 degrees and nearby fires clouded the views. Our last 2 days were nice, cool and overcast. We were disappointed that fires were prohibited and no A/C made 2 "nights" a little uncomfortable. Thankfully the cabin is fully powered as many properties around there are not.
Tom, the owner, was great at communicating with us throughout the process and made great suggestions for Denali and Anchorage.
Nancy, the caretaker, was very sweet and welcoming when showing us around.
A few noteworthy items we would recommend to anybody renting here: Understand that you need to pack all your trash out, the cabin is at least 30 minutes of dirt road from the highway, if you want full use of the cabin (extra shower & washer/dryer) you have to pay extra to use the bottom floor, the cabin is remote but the lake has many properties surrounding it, and the lake is predominantly pike, which is fun to catch but not great to clean or eat. We hoped to see more wildlife but only saw a beaver, birds, chipmunks, ducks, and loons around the lake. We were able to spot three some moose on our way out just after reaching the paved road, so that was fun!
Our check-in was delayed due to another group leaving and despite calling Nancy in advance she seemed surprised of our arrival. We found the calendar on VRBO to be inaccurate initially and check-in times are obviously very loose.
We would definitely consider this property again!
