Photos and Description of this Thurmont holiday house

4 BR, 2 Full Baths, sleeps 10

(This listing is the same house as Homeaway #4201472 which is listed in the Gettysburg area. ) In the foothills of Catoctin National Park (home of the Presidential Retreat, Camp David). Swimming, boating, hiking, waterfalls, Fall beauty. Skiing, golf, antiquing, all local and well done. Home moved and rebuilt in 2005 with all new kitchen, baths. On owner's farm, 1500 feet from main house. Built as luxury upscale guesthouse with the finest materials and craftsmanship. Bright and sunny, open and inviting. There is nothing 'rough' about this home!!!!! Very relaxing, great views and/or privacy. Minutes from food markets and restaurants. This is a property for the discriminating traveler who desires the highest quality. Please read our reviews- we are very proud!!!

The Best!!!: Sometimes you just have to brag- Chris and I ( and most guests) believe that this house far exceeds expectations. Our reviews speak for themselves. We really do attempt to make your stay just what you want it to be. You will always find this home in top condition and working order. We have attempted to set rates that are justified by this property ( again, most guests relate how fair it is, once they arrive, or as they depart. This is not a cabin in the woods- it is a home that took two years of great carpentry and masonry work to build, with no expense spared until it was completed. Please visit with us and give us your thoughts- we know they will be happy ones. Thanks Bill

About Bill or Chris

Chris and Bill built this home in 2004 to move into while they renovated their existing farmhouse they have lived in for 35 years. Their farmhouse is a 1794 Moravian brick/stone home, featured in many magazine articles. This log structure was to be burned, and rescued by Bill. It features 'Perma Chink'- a finish between the logs that is flexible and insulated. The home is airtight and fresh. It features old materials used whenever possible.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The cabin was just fabulous. We all LOVED it very, very much. I'd LOVE to come back. We didn't even fill out the guest book because, in our haste to leave, we overlooked getting it done. Duhhhhhhhh. The photos online don't really do it justice. And, getting away for the weekend was simply perfect. What a lovely hideaway. My best friend said it was serenity personified. Exactly what I needed.

Perfectly Lovely!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for 4 nights earlier this month. We are a 4-some of women on an annual trip: hiking segments of the Appalachian Trail but looking for top-notch creature comforts at night. Breeches Pocket was perfect! It is a log home with a lot of character seamlessly expanded with wonderful amenities. It a great balance between rustic charm and thoroughly updated surroundings. The home contained quality furnishings (cabinetry, glassware, dishes) of much higher standard than a typical rental. Location is perfect for day hikes on the Appalachian trail (20 minutes away) and is an ideal place to relax at the end of the day. Location is also convenient to amazing history –Gettysburg, Frederick, etc. The grounds are very private. You won’t feel like you are in the middle of a neighborhood, but rather woodsy with a view of horses out the back window. Owner lives adjacent to property so convenient for any questions or a pop by.

Our family recently stayed 4 nights and enjoyed the home and all there is to do in the area. The home is beautiful and well maintained. We wish it had been longer!

Could not have picked a more perfect house for our family getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful, unique house in a gorgeous setting in the Maryland mountains. I stayed there with friends and family, and made it the staging headquarters for my daughter's wedding which was held at a lovely venue on Catoctin mountain. It couldn't have been more perfect - part of the house is a 19th century log cabin that the owners had dismantled and moved to the property, and the remainder is an extremely tasteful addition. Altogether it provides charm and great space and all the modern conveniences.

Bill and his wife built the cabin across the road from their own lovely old farm house and he stopped by shortly after we checked in to make sure we had everything we needed.

We didn't have time to explore the many state parks and natural resources in the vicinity but will definitely go back to do that, and would love to stay at this lovely house again.

Lovely home; bedroom arrangement might be an issue

  • 4 of 5

This is a lovely property. The home is beautiful, well-equipped and well maintained. The grounds and setting were wonderful for our family with young grandchildren (including visiting the goats down the lane). The drawback is that two of the bedrooms are only accessed by going through another bedroom; and one bathroom is only accessed by going through a bedroom, while the other bathroom is only accessed by going through two bedrooms. It worked for our extended family, though going through your in-laws' bedroom to get to yours isn't something everyone would feel comfortable with.

Bill and Chris were most gracious hosts and we had a delightful weekend in this home.

Excellent stay

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I were gathering from different parts of the country to celebrate each of our accomplishments. We decide to book this cabin in Thurmont, and was thoroughly happy that we did. It was located in a quiet town, and the cabin had everything we need. You can tell that the owners, who built the cabin themselves, truly put in a lot of time and care on the cabin. The only con I can give is that there was only 2 bathrooms, one in the lower floor and one in the upper floor. Having 9 people share 2 bathrooms was a bit inconvenient. Perhaps one day the owners can add a half bath on the ground floor. In any case, we would certainly consider renting this cabin again in the future!! Thank you for helping to make our reunion a success!

PERFECT weekend escape!

  • 5 of 5

Far enough away and yet not that far at all! The house is absolutely GORGEOUS! Each spring we get together (8-10) of us girls, for a weekend, we all live in/near Baltimore. We try to get far enough away from the kids n husbands so we can't be easily summoned back, but don't want to spend the entire time traveling. This was perfect! This house has all modern amenities, with the touches of country life. The nearby neighbors have a TON of friendly goats and horses and allowed us to say hi :)

Initially, we had hoped to hike on Saturday but got rained out - LUCKILY, Frederick is only 15 mins away and we spent the day in the town shopping (bummer - not). We spent Saturday evening around the fire pit making smores. We will def consider this home for future excursions.

Camp David. Ski resorts are within 20 minutes , and Golf courses abound (ask hapless owner/golfer for best/worst). Dutch country Pa. is a two hour drive, and Annapolis is one hour and fifteen minutes. Great food everywhere. Hood College and Mt.St.Mary's are nearby. The Colorfest, a Fall Festival in town is the 2nd weekend in October. There is a REAL Zoo for kids locally and many nature activities in the State Park.

We supply DVDS, toys , games, birdseed (for feeder), squirrels, rabbits, horses, goats, friendly old dog, quiet country roads for cycling, 16' wide heart pine flooring (recycled, no less). The logs in the house are oak, chestnut and pine from about 1850. There are two rooms that have a beautiful sunrise feature, and the master BR has a picture window- the cherry tree outside it blossoms in the spring, pure white. The chimney and foundation are built of native stone, recycled from two barn foundations. The farm house we live in (Bill, Chris) is a very rare MORAVIAN home, built in 1794. Its original owner was a member of the local Moravian congregation in GRACEHAM, MD., two miles away as the crow flies. Like history? Just ask!!!!!
