4Br Lakefront/Ski House in the Berkshires

50 Reviews
Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

Photos and Description of this Otis holiday house

4 BR: sleeps 10, 3 full bath, Internet, game room w/ pool, ping pong, HDTV

Lakefront property with own dock on Otis Reservoir with beautiful views and garden. Great for fall foliage. For ski season: 25 minutes to Butternut, 55 minutes to Jiminy Peak, 6 minutes to Otis Ridge, and steps from lake for cross country skiing or skating. 2 minutes to 'downtown East Otis' with Katie's Country store and gas station with all essentials. 5 minutes to Tolland St Park, 12 minutes to Jacob's Pillow, 35-50 minutes from Tanglewood, Shakespeare & Co, Rockwell Museum, Outlets in Lee, and the rest of the Berkshire's attractions. Max of 4 cars. House has full working kitchen with china for 10+, dinner table for 6, bar stools for 4, two refrigerators, electric oven with 4 glasstop burners, microwave, coffee maker, and dishwasher. Also has a washer and dryer and a back-up power generator. The basement has a 42' HDTV hooked up to satellite TV, full sized pool table, dart board, and separate ping pong table. Recently added high speed satellite internet with Wifi (1 Gig/week, no streaming videos please). Lots of games for young and old. The screened-in porch is used during 3 seasons and seats 10.

June/September Rental: The house comes with its own dock 75 feet from the back deck. There is a boat lift if you have a boat 18feet or less. Also available are a canoe and a kayak that can be put into the water. Otis Reservoir is a highly desirable lake because it is drained down 25+ feet every winter thus killing all seaweed. The water is beautiful and clean for all swimming and boating activities -- no green algea or seaweed. The reservoir is 1/2 mile wide and 4+ miles long. House has a wet room for storing all tubes, paddles, life jackets. Also, it is on the eastern shore of the lake which means it gets the afternoon sun -- more likely to be swimmable on marginal days. Also, good fishing right off the dock (for smaller fish).

About Marshal Root

I am a helpful, courteous landlord looking for high quality renters that will take good care of our second home.

Marshal Root purchased this house in 1998

Why Marshal Root chose Berkshires

Rustic beauty of the Berkshires with beautiful lake views, in a quiet bucolic town with access to skiing, dance, music, theater, outlets. Easy access from both the East (Boston) and the South (NY/CT). High quality home able to host guests from near and far to 'get away from it all' but still have modern comforts, full kitchen, satellite TV and wifi internet.

So much to do and see. . .

. . . and that was before we even left the home.

Wonderful three level home (you're renting a home, not a house.) to use as a base for exploring the Berkshires or as a destination in itself. Immaculate, spacious property in a beautiful setting on a lake. The open layout of the house is great and kids have the best bedroom (with a bunk bed) upstairs with a loft like balcony. A place away for them and still in earshot for you.

Plenty of entertainment in the basement for young and old (limited channels on the tv so bring DVD's for the kids. . . but thats not why you are there anyway.) and a serene setting on the main level to enjoy the view any time of year. After arriving at night, the first thing I did upon waking and walking to the great room, was run back and get my camera. Don't let the 30 min travel to skiing keep you away in the winter, it is well worth it. The rest of the seasons sell themselves.

Well appointed kitchen, plenty of housewares to take care of everyone, comfy beds, enough bathrooms and the owners belongings are minimal and out of the way.

The only thing that keeps this from being a slam dunk, especially in the winter, is no fire place. Almost didn't choose this property because of it, but it would have been my loss.

The owners are very amicable, the transactions went smoothly and they had plenty of helpful hints and tips for the home and the area.

I'm trying to figure out now, when the next time I could get back there.

Don't hesitate to choose this property.

I attest that I am not a friend or family member nor am I being paid to write this review. . . ^_^

Owner's Response: Very accurate review about the strengths and weaknesses: great views, full working kitchen, comfy beds and 3 full bathrooms vs. lack of fireplace, 30 minute drive to larger ski areas. One update: we now have satellite TV so you are not limited to one or two over the air stations. Also, we do have an outside firepit that we use three seasons a year. Come see for yourself.

Beautiful home and breathtaking views!

  • 5 of 5

It was our first time in the Berkshires and we really picked a beauty! The ski lodge home was warm and inviting. With amazing grounds to explore and plenty to do inside in case of bad weather, we were totally entertained. I think this will become an annual retreat for our family!

Perfect house and setting!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I recently had our second stay in Otis and we had another lovely week at this house. The house is incredibly comfortable and has everything you could be looking for in a relaxing stay. The setting is especially perfect, with the view from the living room/kitchen right onto the water. The reservoir itself is great for boating (we used the canoe with the rental, but you see all types) and the water is very clear for swimming if it happens to be warm enough. Marshal, the owner, is very nice and easy to work with for all rental arrangements. We look forward to future stays.

Perfect long weekend at the lake

  • 5 of 5

Two families shared this wonderful house on the lake. The set up was perfect with ample bedrooms, bathrooms and a gorgeous living room with huge windows overlooking the deck and lake. The kitchen was well supplied and the gas grill is fantastic. Plenty of toys for the kids and all the water activities you need. It was great having a country store near by for provisions. All in all a great weekend in a great location. We will be back. The owner could not have been easier to work with. Well worth the reasonable price.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind words. I do love Katie's Country Store -- feels like a time-warp back to the good part of the 1950's. Hope you can make it back sometime soon. Our family uses the house most of the summer, it is available for two weeks in June and from late September, so for the warmest weeks we suggest booking early if you can. That said, planning summer is usually hard to plan -- I'm sure something will work out. Thanks again, Marshal

Perfect Getaway - while still being close to home

  • 5 of 5

I had had several email/conversations with Marshal Root (owner) in the months prior to our vacation date. He always responded quickly, was very easy to communicate with, answered all my questions and just got an overall good feeling about him - which in turn made me feel secure in that the lake house would be all it was stated to be. IT WAS - AND MORE!! Upon walking in the front door, the first thing you see is a cathedral ceiling living/dining room with loads of large windows looking right out on the lake. It was breath taking, to say the least. The house was very clean and we all had no problem deciding on sleeping arrangements, since there were so many options. The decor makes you feel at home. The deck looks over the lake and that was the popular spot for everybody. My son had brought his boat and Marshal had explained everything we needed to know about what to do with that.

We all had such a relaxing time while we were there - at the same time we also went kayaking, canoeing, fishing, exploring the islands, fires at night with lots of family communication going on (and of course, s'mores), had "friendly pool games", cooked on the grill and lots of meals in the perfectly stocked kitchen. We took a day trip to Campbell's Falls, which is an amazing waterfall with all the true beauty Mother Nature could offer. We took drives around the area and all around the lake plus a couple of us actually got up in the mornings and walked 3 miles!

This is my 7th year of renting a home from Homeaway and each time I do it, I have to hold my breath that the place will be what was presented on the website. I've been blessed because, so far, every one of them has been great. Marshal's lake house even exceeded the pictures on the site, which made us all very happy. I would most certainly recommend this lake house on Otis Reservoir for any size group or family. You will be guaranteed to enjoy every single minute while you're there. We live approx. 1 to 11/2 hours away which also was very convenient for us in that family members had basketball tournaments or lacrosse games, even a job interview during that week, so we were able to still attend but yet continue the wonderful vacation.

Thank you, Marshal for having such a gorgeous place for us to come to, and for being so very friendly and cooperative. I also wanted to say that I LOVED meeting your mother and her new husband when we first got to the house. She was very helpful, friendly and Bob was very funny

Beautiful rustic setting on a lake. Looking at the map, the marker is off: our property is ON the lake, and Candlewood Road is not as marked, not near the lake. Our property is at between the end of Langdon Lane and the lake. Quiet roads (Vine St) off the property lead to trails through the woods -- walk a mile through the woods to Katie's Country Store. Skate, walk, or ski to islands in the reservoir (in warmer weather, take the kayak or canoe and pick blueberries). Snowmobile to the local state park, Tollland State Forest, that surrounds 1/2 of the lake. Otis is a town that hasn't changed much in 50 years -- country stores, small restaurants, rural setting with a community used to meeting needs of vacationers and boaters. Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, Butternut and Jiminy Peak all nearby.

Other Activities: skiing, skating, ice fishing, snowmobiling, walking through woods, leaf peeping, bird-watching
