About the property

3 bedrooms (each w/ private bath), two half baths, 1 sleeping loft, sleeps 8-9

Stay at the Watauga Lake vacation rental home with the most private shoreline! Whipkins Cove has more than 300 feet... and it's swimmable. Plus you get a private dock during your stay.

Lake Watauga Luxury: Who said you can't have luxury when you're lakeside? Whipkins Cove comes complete with leather couches, plush bedding, 5 flat-screen TVs, an extensive DVD/CD collection (hundreds to view), and more.

Foodies will love the well-appointed kitchen. In addition to the stainless steel refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, and gas-burning stove, Whipkins Cove has All-Clad pots and pans (including stock pots large enough to boil 20 ears of corn), Wusthof professional-grade knives, 4-slot toaster, pancake griddle, stainless steel mixing bowls, large food-prep area and more.

All nine guests can comfortably gather around the solid wood dining room table, while comfortable handmade Adirondack chairs beckon visitors to pause on the decks outside.

Great gatherings: This is a great place for multi-generational family gatherings. There is ample gathering space for everyone to share meals or a movie, but also plenty of spread-out space throughout the three-story home and extensive collection of porches and decks. Sorry though, this is not a house for wild parties or load-'em-in breaks from college. Also, no pets. An ill-mannered dog has forced us to rethink our pet policy.

Watauga Lake house for all seasons: This is a home for all seasons! Springtime brings new flowers, active wildlife, crisp mornings and cool nights. Summer, of course, offers swimming and fishing right off the private shoreline. Autumn’s tapestry of vibrant reds, yellows and orange paint the hillsides in breathtaking hues. And in winter, you can experience Watauga Lake at its most peaceful. You might even get to see snow falling on the glassy winter lake as you nestle by the fire indoors. You’ll certainly find snow each winter on the ski slopes within a 45-minute drive across the Tenn./NC state line.

The cabin’s two-story wrap-around decks and expansive lower decks give guests plenty of room to spread out. Six-plus acres of woods surrounds the cabin and delights nature lovers with its mature trees, fern-and-moss-covered embankments and striking rock outcroppings.

More than 300 feet of private shoreline give guests so much to explore – possibly with wildlife sightings of beaver, deer, herons and black bears.

What makes this cabin unique

Whipkins Cove lets visitors get back to nature while still enjoying luxury accommodations.

This property is unusual among other lake offerings:

- It's right on the water.

- 300+ feet of shoreline and about 3 acres of land let you get away from everyday life without having other travelers right on top of you.

- Ample off-street parking, including enough space to easily park a boat trailer.

- Access to a private boat launch for which only a handful of people have keys. It's a very short walk from the launch to our dock.

- Large aluminum dock with deep water underneath.

- Giant fire pit right at the water's edge is perfect for creating campfire memories. We even provide the marshmallow roasting forks.

- Rental includes kayaks, a jon boat and life vests of many sizes. Plus we provide fishing poles and water toys. No need to haul your own.

Guestbook comments from the owner

First of all, I would like to say thank you for accommodating all of our families this weekend. We had so much fun, from swimming around the cove, riding on the boats and just relaxing around the cabin. I would highly recommend rending a boat for a couple days and exploring the lake. I also recommend making a bonfire, because our families had a blast making s'mores and just talking around the fire. (Comment written in guest book).

Amazing home with everything you need for a relaxing trip!

  • 5 of 5

One of the best vacation homes we have ever had! This property is a treat! You can tell right away that it is well cared for. The owners have thought of every little detail. I liked how they left little notes of instruction/information everywhere. The basement area is perfect for kids of all ages. They have toys, games, and books that meet a variety of interests and ages. The loft has a gorgeous view complete with a comfy daybed for reading or napping. My guys loved the kayaks and the row boat! Beautiful views of the lake were seen from every deck level. Porch swings were also in abundance! So many nice touches- I could go on, but you should just see for yourself. :)

Unparalleled Lake Luxury!

  • 5 of 5

What royalty our family felt like for the weekend! We truly appreciate the thought that the owners put into every single detail on the property. It was a memorable and magnificent stay. Lore was prompt with her response when we first arrived and had difficulty connecting to the WiFi (which we were then able to connect to immediately). We were in need of NOTHING. On our way in, we passed the drive in movie theater in Elizabethton. I have never been, and my mom thought it would be fun to venture out one evening for a movie. Once we arrived at Whipkins Cove, we did not want to leave for anything (not even when we had to go back home after checkout)! We spent the weekend drooling over the beauty of God's creation and all the work that the owners put into making this a vacation dream home. We will certainly be returning. Everything about the house was gorgeous. I was particularly drawn to the upstairs bathroom with the walk in shower and amazing bathtub. There were even bath salts present for my relaxation. They truly thought of everything! I would recommend this cabin to anyone. We laughed as people floated by the house on boats/ kayaks and just pointed and stared in amazement at the home. It is massive and breathtaking from the water! It was a real pleasure working with Lore. She is flexible and understanding. I am a huge cook and would have considered myself in heaven if I never left the kitchen all weekend! From the outdoor furniture to the matches and pens in the drawer and EVERYTHING in between, we thank you for such an incredible experience on Watauga Lake. There are even nicely printed labels located in various places around the home with helpful hints such as one in the shower that says to turn the knob a certain way if the shower head won't stop dripping. Helpful hints were handy and plentiful! This is one weekend that I will never forget. It is tranquil, serene, and a getaway to be adored by all. I hope to be speaking with Lore again soon as we plan for a longer family vacation next year. Everything was top notch and wonderful, from the time I found this home on VRBO to writing this very review! Thank you so much, Whipkins Cove!

An incredible lake home for our entire family and friends. You will not be disappointed. The owners have thought of every little detail. Super clean and awesome!! My husband is a culinary instructor and absolutely loved the gourmet kitchen. Stocked with all the bells and whistles to create wonderful meals. All the rooms and beds are so comfortable. The private cove boat dock, the kayaks, the endless hours of noodling, relaxing and lake fun. The house layout is fantastic for places to watch TV and or read a book. Looking forward to coming again!!

Excellent Lake House!!

  • 5 of 5

You will not be disappointed with this rental. The location and view are awesome. It has a very rustic, lake house feel, but everything is very modern. Wonderful kitchen with lots of great cookware. The beds are super comfy and the game room downstairs is great for kids. The entire house was exceptionally clean. There are decks everywhere with deck furniture to enjoy and a gas grill. We had so much fun with the boat and kayaks, fishing, and roasting hot dogs and making s'mores at the fire pit! The owners are great to work with.

Fantastic House

  • 5 of 5

We are amazed at your attention to detail.

For the first few days we were there with my brother and his family from Atlanta as well as my sister from Phoenix. All travel extensively and all were wowed by your house and the entire set up.

At one point we decided to make up a game called "stump the landlord".

Want a Tom Hanks movie ? Yep two or three

Want a sharpie pen ? Yep (kitchen drawer)

Want a hex key ? Yep (one was with the tools in the utility closet, are you kidding me?)

We had major adventure using your kayaks and our paddleboards going up the cove to the whitewater of the Watauga.

We could not have been more pleased.

We are definitely planning a return visit.

You have a gift for hospitality by remote control.
