About the property

House, 7 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 6 Baths, (Sleeps 20)

Luxury, rest, creative space, privacy, peace....hiking, fishing, wooded walks, family memories...we invite you to experience our lakefront home, Rivendell in Branson.

Ideal for family reunions, staff meetings, retreats, luxurious vacations, golf outings, girls getaways, and those who want to hike and fish by day and relax in a hot tub by night...

Our guests have asked to take our mattresses home, 'borrow' our original art :-), move in permanently...One tween hugged her mom and said, 'I feel like I'm a princess!!'

Golfers rest between rounds near the grill or fireside for a game of chess. Fishermen hike down to the lake to our private dock to catch trout for lunch. Families walk through the woods and roast marshmallows over the firepit. Sunlovers tan on the deck and then lounge in the hot tub...

No need to worry about thin walls or loud neighbors or traffic noises...or people even knowing where you are! Our address is literally off the map, tucked away within 8+ acres, hidden by trees on 3 sides and Lake Taneycomo on the fourth.

Though just 3.5 miles from Hwy 76, 6 miles from Branson Landing and minutes further to all the fun Branson offers, you may never want to leave once you pull into the garage...

Wake-up in your luxurious bedroom to watch the deer in the morning. Warm-up to winter seated fireside by the Lord of the Rings chess set. Take a nature walk with loved ones. Enjoy laughter with family and friends around a grand dining table, over a game of shuffleboard, table bowling, foosball, arcade games, or with the Wii.

Watch the sunset with a panoramic lake view on one of the decks. Relax in the 8-10 person hot tub or detox in the 2-person sauna before you say, 'good-night.'

And end the day with a cup of your favorite coffee and a great book from Rivendell's house library as you sink into one of our fabulous chaises and chairs.

Welcome to our family's B&B (without the 2nd B).

Welcome to a private home hidden in the woods on Lake Taneycomo.

Welcome to a resting space where no one can find you and no one is calling your name.

About Alicia

Early 2010, our fun-filled family embarked on four months of remodeling to transform this lakeview home into Rivendell! After taking prayer and writing retreats for 17 years, the door opened for us to create a retreat home of our own.

Through the miracle of adoption, we are the overjoyed parents of three outrageously creative children. Our eldest is gifted with Asperger's Syndrome, our middle is graced with extroverted compassion, and our youngest is currently seeking to master burping the ABCs... We home school part-time, parent full-time, and laugh a lot to stay sane.

Our personal residence is about one hour from Rivendell -- out in the country where you can count the stars. We are the happy guardians of 4 rescued (outside) dogs, 3 odd (outside) cats, 1 rabbit (yes, inside...for the moment), and 9 unusually social chickens.

We write. We travel. We invest in the next generation. We welcome you to Rivendell, our Branson retreat home!

Alicia purchased this house in 2009

Why Alicia chose Missouri

The rocks, hills, trees, lakes...Branson is filled with natural beauty. Since moving to Missouri from Texas in 1996, we've made frequent trips down to Branson to take the kids to Silver Dollar City as a family or to find a quiet retreat for rest and writing individually. We love the drive and often have taken side roads to simply enjoy the scenery.

Over the years, a dream grew in our heart of creating a home that could be a happy haven for families and a spiritual resting place for pilgrims. Our dreams accelerated in October of 2009 when we found this gorgeous home with a beautiful view, private acreage, and enough room for us to create a place of renewal and rest.

What makes this house unique

Reunions, family vacations, staff retreats, personal getaways, a writer's haven...

Groups will enjoy cooking in a beautiful lake view kitchen with 2 ovens. Once dinner is served, all can eat together in a kitchen/dining room that seat 22 comfortably or many more by simply opening the dining room door onto the upper deck.

Families will appreciate two living rooms, a 4-bed bunkroom just inches off the lower family room, loads of interactive games, and enough decks, patios, and yard to give everyone space to roam.

Small groups will delight in several warm rooms ideal for connecting, debriefing, brainstorming, and planning for the future with the only distractions being an occasional eagle and the irresistible sunsets...Our conference-size dining table seats 16 in comfort in a room sure to inspire.

Individuals will relish their private bedrooms, each of which features a relaxing chair/chaise and a desk that will bring out the writer in you! Every room is named, customized, and designed to spoil your body while you rest your mind.

Beautiful place!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Rivendell very much. There was 18 of us, adults and children for our annual family gathering. The house itself is beautifully decorated and had everything we needed. Well stocked kitchen and loved the huge table for all of us to sit at the same time. The walk down to the dock was much more steep than we expected but we managed it. My father in law struggled a bit with the hike back up but we loved the private dock and fishing. Owners were contacted because we couldn't find the router and they returned my text within minutes and answered my question.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Rivendell. It is the perfect place for families and especially those who enjoy fishing. The dock is a hike down through the woods, but with our winding paths and stairs at its steepest, it is accessible for most healthy adults, but the uphill can be a challenge for some. We have stocked Rivendell with most of the necessities of living so our families can enjoy their time together rather than running out for normal supplies. And as much as possible, we try to answer every question or problem as soon as we can. Guests are supplied with my cell phone number and are encouraged to call or text any time they need to. We hope to host your lovely family again in the future. .

Disappointed - Did Not Meet Expectations

  • 2 of 5

Our family stayed in May. I waited several weeks to write a more objective review than I would have early on. We are 5 families from 2 states and 3 towns with 8 adults and 7 children who meet at least once a year for a reunion. This was our 4th reunion in the last 3 years and our only negative experience with a property. I have used HomeAway for annual trips to the beach and for snow skiing over the last 10 years and never had an experience like this. I just rented in Florida and it was great. Never rated anything below 4 stars. Some of the issues we encountered were:

Yard was unkempt and needed to be mowed.

Cardboard and scraps of wood were laying around the house and near the fences.

Debri from recent floods surrounded the private boat dock and made it basically unusable. On the 2nd day, we worked 2 hours to clean away some of the debri so we could at least sit and enjoy the view. It had been there awhile - very thick, wide and smelly- dead fish, trash, etc.

For those staying in the rooms downstairs, the noises from plumbing and people walking upstairs made it impossible to rest. The noise level was shocking.

The only heat and air unit control is upstairs and it was difficult to maintain comfortable temperatures for those downstairs.

The benches that allow large groups to sit at one table in the kitchen have cushions that are badly worn and need replacing.

There is no TV in the upstairs living room

Lastly, although we are a group of ranchers and farmers who are used to outdoor critters such as ticks, chiggers, etc. we had a horrible experience with bug bites on this trip. Within one hour of arrival we discovered ticks crawling on us just from walking in the yard. We immediately began using bug spray. There were also tons of spiders in the house, including brown recluse, primarily in the lower level. It is very dark down there . The day we left, several family members began to have strange bites appearing on their bodies. At least one person from each town had them. Sent pictures to the property manager . She sent us a statement from a pest control that they were not bed bugs. The bites were unlike anything we had encountered. Some of us had as many as 25 bites.

An old car is stored in one side of the garage.

Not as advertised, older property, some rotting wood around gutters. Its a big rustic cabin and not a luxury home. Kitchen is very small. Based upon all the 5 star reviews, we are still in shock at what we found.

Owner's Response: Rivendell is a lovely, unique, well kept home with woods on 3 sides and lake on the 4th. That very charm has attracted guests to Rivendell year after year with many repeat guests. We have rented since 2012 and have received all 4 and 5 star reviews until this. After several days and hours of angry texts, some in which this guest accused us of fabricating our reviews, she offered not to send in a bad review if I would refund her entire stay. To prove that our reviews are truthful, I chose instead to let her say her peace. We spoke a couple times during their stay as they set off the alarm and I checked in before the police were dispatched. We had several notifications of doors left ajar. We had a major storm during their stay. I checked to see if there was any damage. In these conversations she told me of the fun the entire family was having at the house, even to the point of sending pictures of happy people and kids playing. Their satisfaction changed after they had DEPARTED when they began experiencing bug bites which they insisted were bed bugs. Although no guests before them had experienced a problem, we had pest control inspect the home thoroughly. There was no indication of bed bug activity. We encourage guests to wear bug spray whenever outside in the Ozarks. Our critter population has exploded this year due to flooding and no winter freeze. They may have gotten bitten by oak mites or spider mites which fall from the trees. The owners have always used natural cleaning products and pest control, but have contracted now to have the inside of the home, lawn, decks, porches and even the dock sprayed professionally with chemicals. We had mowed recently before the guests had arrived, but had a heavy rain after. We had just purchased a new hot tub cover. The box and packing was neatly tucked under the carport until the storm strewed it about on their second day. The roof was replaced this year. I was unaware of a rotting eave that should have been replaced by the roofers. The lake level was too high to safely pull debris from the dock as we were still in flood stage. We offer our guests one side of the garage and store a classic 78 Thunderbird willed to the owner's autistic son on the other. This home is lovingly used by many and we refurbish yearly. In 2017 it was a new roof and 2 additional bathrooms. Dining room cushion covers will be done in 2018. Weather and outside critters are beyond our control but we strive to make every stay pleasant. .

Family reunion

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect retreat for our family of 17!. Comfortable bedrooms, and all but the bunkroom had its own bathroom. Flat backyard for yard games, and wide front porch for taking in the peaceful surroundings. Spectacular view from the back deck. The kids (and adults) enjoyed the game tables in the lower level. We had everything we needed, and also loved the unique decor and art. Thoughtful details in every room of the house. Grocery store Is close which certainly helps when feeding a large group. Access to the house by going through the garage allowed our parents avoid the front stairs. The second refrigerator in the garage was a huge plus, too. We did supplement the icemaker with 2 small bags of ice across 5 days, which is not bad. Thanks for sharing your home!

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a detailed and wonderful review. We love when our families use all of the facilities - relaxing on the large front porch, meditating on the decks with stunning views of Lake Taneycomo, enjoying the games and just family time together in a space fit for a large family. So close to town, yet tucked away in the woods makes it the perfect place for quality family time as well as retreats. We hope you make Rivendell part of your family reunion plans for years to come.

Perfect Retreat Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This property was excellent for our group of seven couples from all over the country joining for a leadership and ministry retreat. The views where wonderful and the property is great. But the house is so comfortable. Tucked away in the woods but close enough to run out for coffee. The owners and managers were very helpful and accommodating as well. Highly recommend.

Thanks again!

Owner's Response: We purchased Rivendell to be a haven for spiritual refreshing. We are so happy you found the atmosphere, home and views to be conducive to your leadership and ministry retreat. It has been very near and dear to our heart and we have taken our own private retreats there as well as led retreat groups. With seven bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, it is very accommodating for a couple's retreat. It is also perfect for family reunions. The 8 acres, dock, and lake make for great quality time among the generations. And although we have WiFi and WII games, the woodsy nature of the property encourages our guests to turn off the electronics and spend their time with one another. For that we are grateful. Thank you for a lovely review. We would love to host you again.

Overall, very happy. Only one negative was the hot to started to smoke and we called it in, but no one showed up to work on it. The grandkids were disappointed.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We strive as much as possible to keep everything well maintained so each guest has a wonderful experience. Unfortunately sometimes the unexpected breakdown occurs. If at all possible, we will get it repaired that day, but a hot tub requires a hot tub repairman and in the height of summer, it is hard to get an immediate appointment in a town of hundreds of hot tubs and pools. And once the repairman came we had to wait a couple days for parts. This is an unfortunate and rare occurrence, but I always keep up with our guests to let them know the progress and we always, as we did with this guest, compensate them for the inconvenience. Once fixed the hot tub has been up and running and an enjoyment for our guests. Again, we are happy you found the home accommodating overall and we apologize for the inconvenience.
