The Castelo (castle) apartment is a one bedroom apartment in an 18th century building, near the top of the hill in the oldest neighborhood of Lisbon. A few steps away is Castelo Sao Jorge, with its terrace and walls nestled on the highest point of the hill, affording a 360 degree view of Lisbon, the magnificent river Tagus, and the other 6 hills undulating across the city. Down the hill is the majestic main cathedral Se, built in 1050. The cathedral’s tower can be seen from the balcony of the apartment, along with a partial view of the river. The modern 75m2 (800ft2) apartment is filled with natural light, coming through 5 double glass windows/ doors leading to the 2 balconies. It retains traditional Portuguese character throughout. Amenities include security camera, central audio system, hydro message shower cabin, wireless internet, granite and marble bathroom and kitchen. Upon arrival at the apartment, you will be greeted by a local who can provide help 24/7.

During the day, the castle is a popular attraction. At sunset, the neighborhood reverts to a peaceful tranquility, brimming with historical elegance, perfect for romantic strolls on narrow winding cobblestone streets. (Some guests have recommended turning off all the lights in the apartment at night, and opening all the shutters, to bathe in the amber glow from the street lamps, the sparkling lights from the rustic buildings, and the silvery gleam of the moon). Enjoy relaxed dinners at nearby family run restaurants, and drinks at hilltop cafes overlooking the city and its sparkling lights. Or, visit Resto do Chapito, down the block, a restaurant, cafe and bar, with a terrace famed for its spectacular view of the city and the river. And for a relaxing time, visit the top-ranked wine bar around the corner of the building, where the owner will explain to you about all the wine regions in Portugal.

The apartment is easy to reach by mini bus, tram or taxi from other downtown locations. The bus stop is 10m (30ft) from the apartment (frequency: 15 minutes), and the whimsical tram station is a 3 minute walk. Access to other neighborhoods by foot is quick: Baixa (at the bottom of the hill) in 5-10 minutes, Chiado in 15 minutes, and a major subway station in 10-15 minutes. (A guide to finding short cuts for walking is offered in the welcome book.) Car rental is absolutely not needed in Lisbon. The international airport is approximately 15 minutes away by taxi (12 to 20 euros).

Alfama flat

This apartment is in the best location in Lisbon, Alfama and steps from the Castle. There are great amenities nearby including a great wine bar, Pingo Doce grocery store, Chapito's Restaurant and night club and ceramic art shop. The Commercial Plaza and Baixa neighbourhood are close. The apartment is lovely with hardwood floors, granite countertop, and marble tile. The apartment also has an elevator and two small balconies.

Owner's Response: During the Moorish occupation in the 8th century, the entire city was called Alfama. As the city grew, districting was developed. The parish of Castelo (where the apartment is located), which is the castle and the area surrounding it, was established in 1147. The parishes of Alfama, of which there are 4, are further down the slope or 10 minute walk from Castelo. The apartment’s building was built by Viscount Sao Bartolomeu in 1800s, its 1 meter (3 feet) outer wall as well as original tiles are well preserved. During the building’s renovation, documents were found suggesting that on the land, there had been a small palace for queen Dona Leonor in the 15th century. Small artifacts from Roman civilization were also found. The history is fascinating. Thank you for your review, John. We look forward to having you back.

Great location and spacious comfortable apartment

Before you even get to this apartment, you will appreciate the excellent, detailed travel information that Joe, the owner, will send you via email. Joe's property management company had a greeter waiting for us at the apartment when we arrived. The greeter gave us a tour of the apartment and explained how to work everything (dishwasher, washier/dryer, stove, shower, etc).

The apartment is well equipped for a comfortable stay. Plenty of large, double-pane windows let ithe sunshine pour into this living space. The windows can be opened for good ventilation if desired. We were there in the cool of January, so adequate heat was more important to us. I'm happy to say that the apartment has a good heating system.

The location of the apartment, just below the Castelo de Sao Jorge, in the historic centre of Lisboa, is another plus. There are wonderful views over the city from the grounds of the Castelo (entry fee). Plenty of restaurants can be found nearby. As it turned out, my favourite restaurant, the tiny ' Claras em Castelo ' was just up the street toward the Castelo, and a mere minute walk from the apartment!

Feel like buying some groceries? A few minutes walk down the cobble stone street there is an elevator which

will bring you right to the entrance of a well stocked Pingo Doce grocery store. We used the same elevator when going to and from the apartment and downtown, Rossio metro and suburban train stations, etc.

We would recommend staying here.

Great property with top class amenities

This property is in a great historic area near the castle, set high up upon the hill. The apartment is very spacious with clean, bright rooms and nicely furnished. There is also a dishwasher and washing machine/dryer which are a helpful addition. Very safe building and close to supermarket and nice local restaurants. Joe is a great host who provides loads of travel information. Highly recommended - would stay there again!

Excellent location; great apartment

Wow! What a fantastic apartment; so very comfortable and beautifully decorated. No need for a car to enjoy the area. Public transportation is plentiful and taxi''s are reasonably priced. The apartment has a fully functioning kitchen with a dishwasher. The washer/dryer combo saved us time and money since we had to wash clothes during our 9 day stay. Joe provided an abundance of valuable information before our arrival. He was super responsive and a pleasure to talk to. We have no problem recommending this place to anyone. We appreciated reading the tips/hints from past guests. Thank you for a great vacation spot!

Your own Castle

We are a couple in our 60's and well travelled. I have never met a landlord like Joe. He is a super star. His communication is excellent. As you can read from other reviews, Joe sends a wealth of information before you even leave home. His management company in Lisbon is top rate and provided all we needed and more.

The apartment is fabulous...Lots of light, beautiful views of the streets and buildings leading up to the Castle. The kitchen was well stocked, the bed comfortable, the living area a nice size. You will not feel cramped in this unit.

Those with mobility issues might want to stay closer to the flat of the hill, if there is such a thing in Lisbon. We quickly learned where the elevators are, yes, public elevators to aid your walking up or down hill. The first elevator brings you right to the grocery store, very handy. The second elevator brings you to the main pedestrian walking street. The Castle area is so romantic..looking up at the Castle at night and having your evening cocktails in the neighborhood, with lots of restaurant selections, can't be beat. This is a place that you actually don't want to write a review for, as you want it all for yourself! Book here and you will be happy as we were. Joe is an exceptional host, even though you will probably not meet him, it feels like he is right around the corner. As mentioned, his communication is excellent. We were there in November. The tourist crowds were dying down. In full tourist season, it may be a little noisy but that is part of the charm. I hope to be back in Lisbon someday and I will certainly be booking way ahead to stay at Joe's. It is one of the best places I have stayed in our years of using VRBO/Homeaway. Enjoy

Elegant, well-equipped, well-located, strong wi-fi

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this upscale apartment with a beautiful view a short block from the Castelo Sao Jorge. The instructions and suggestions that Joe sent in advance were very helpful, as was the voluminous information left by previous guests. The greeter, Daniel, was welcoming and efficient, and very happy to assist us in every way possible. We appreciated being able to check in around noon after our overnight flight from North America. We especially enjoyed being able to easily walk to the Castelo, the grocery store and numerous lovely restaurants. The weather was just cool enough in late October that we didn't need the AC but mostly kept the windows open. That's where the portable fan came in handy -- not only to create a gentle breeze but also to mask street noise (which is inevitable in the heart of an urban tourist area). Thanks so much, Joe and Daniel, for a great stay in Lisbon!
