Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-9)

Our renovated 1870s refuge is the closest you can get to a comfortable old house in the country, but still be in New York City. The lush landscape with tree swing and play area allows you to switch off Manhattan, but it's just a 20 minute walk or four bus stops, down to the Ferry, then the greatest free ride in the world into town. You can see the Verrazano Bridge twinkling from our windows, and the sea from our street.

Indoors you will have room to spread out, cook dinner and relax after a tough day of tourism. Just bring your clothes, we provide everything else. Extended family and friend groups of 5-9 are our specialty. If your crowd is bigger, we have another apartment upstairs in the same house.

You don't need a car, shops and restaurants are a few minutes' walk away. But if you bring one, you will have no trouble parking on our street without the dreaded 'alternate side' hassles you get elsewhere in NYC.

Staying here does require climbing steps, and some spirit of adventure. You need to feel comfortable in a diverse residential neighborhood where people of many races and economic groups live close together, in harmony.

Add a romantic, adventurous twist to your stay in New York.

Despite fare increases everywhere else, the Staten Island Ferry remains the greatest FREE ride in the world, the most beautiful way to enter New York and view the Statue of Liberty and the downtown skyline. Ferries run 24/7, usually every half hour. The ferry terminal is a relaxing 15 minute walk downhill from the house. If you're feeling less energetic on the way back, cabs are available at the terminal for about $5.

Cheap Eats

Within a few minutes walk of our house, you can enjoy, Mexican, Italian, Polish, Sri Lankan and Senegalese cuisines, among others, at much lower prices than the Manhattan tourist traps. Feast on Downtown Staten Island!

About Elena or Craig

This is a genuine family business run by me, my husband and children. We live a few blocks away and love having our guests discover the pleasures of Staten Island. We are more than happy to help you plan your trip and make the most of our wonderful city.

Elena or Craig purchased this house in 2009

Why Elena or Craig chose Staten Island

Our row of eight Victorian homes stretching up a steep hill above the harbor is a unique architectural phenomenon for New York City. Trees tower above you and cool breezes blow on those hot summer nights. Many of the neighboring houses are owned by the Ganas Community, a modern commune, which gives our block a particular friendly, easygoing atmosphere.

You are in your own world, but the city is at your doorstep. And instead of riding the subway, you get to sail across the harbor, watch the skyscrapers loom out of the horizon, and the Statue of Liberty so close you could almost touch it.

About our recent stay at Vertigo villa

It suited our family group very well. Appreciated the little extras flowers, tea, coffee. My granddaughter loved the dolls house, was her seat the whole trip.

Was wonderful to spend time with our lovely family on Staten island.

The children enjoyed the rope swing and were disappointed not to see any snakes, when they went on a hunt. The weather was great warm no rain,so lucky.

Obviously an old property, but it gave us the taste of old New York economical for a large group.

Will be recommending it to family and friends.

If you want limited space and expensive prices you go to the Waldorf

Great stay for our NY trip!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six really enjoyed our stay. This old Victorian home (along with the neighborhood) has lots of character. The beds were comfy and having two bathrooms was great. We cooked breakfast before heading into the city, and really enjoyed the space after our busy, crowded days in NY. Plenty of very hot water came in super handy when it came time for showers. Would stay there again if we come back to the Big Apple.

The house was clean when we arrived and found towels and linens to as we need .

The owners will be replacing the bedding soon and it will be more comfortable .

Over all , it was a nice experience.

  • 1 of 5

Very old musty smell. So many stairs to walk up the house. Need more then One TV. The stair well need more light, someone could get hurt. Big Raccoon in trees. The second bathroom with shower is bad, it comes right from the ceiling not good at all very hard to get in shower you slide side way to fit in. Basement room no air or extra fan. Very bad smell through house. Not a good home.

Very Pleasant

  • 4 of 5

We wanted to take a family trip to NYC and needed to take our two dogs along with us. We began our search on Home Away because we are a family of 6 (4 children ages 8-15) so we knew we wanted a house rental. We found Elena and Craig with their property on Staten Island. I fell in love with the idea of taking the ferry trip daily into the city as well as having a more quite place to go "home" to at the end of our day. I reached out to Elena and Craig though the site and asked about the dogs as well as some other things I had questions about. They were quick to reply and agreed my dogs were welcome to stay at thier property with us.

We arrived late but entry to the property was easy. Craig had told me he too had planned a trip at the same time and would be staying in the apartment upstairs. I was a bit worried that it wouldn't be as private of a stay as I had planned, but that was not the case at all. We barely knew he was there, he came down to introduce himself and meet us on the first full day of our visit but never really saw him again until we had run into him packing his car to head home himself.

Some reviews of this property state it is not a nice neighborhood, I would disagree. I never felt unsafe no matter how late we came home. Some spots in the area can look rundown but the street itself is perfectly fine. You need to keep in mind this is an urban setting, if you are looking to travel to the city you should expect city life when you arive. There were friendly neighbors all around, we stayed for 5 days and had met a few people along the way. The house itself was clean and had everything we needed, pots, pans, bedding and towels. The house had plenty of room for our large family and two dogs. We did not feel at all cramped and enjoy the property as much as the sightseeing we did.

We all agreed we would stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thank you. We particularly appreciate the comments about the neighborhood, coming from a family with children. The residents on our street are a tight-knit, stable group and watch out for each other.

Older House get what you pay for friendly owners though

  • 2 of 5

I know it is an older house but it could use a good deep clean there is stuff all over the walls and the floors were gross. Also I have lived in a diverse area and this was not diverse this is a not so great part of town when we would come home we would have people ask for money and when we would say we didn't have anything they would call us names.

The owners did send an email asking about the house and no I did not respond bc we were also on the go except when we would be there to sleep and eat breakfast. So it isn't all there fault about the issues because I did not complain the but their cleaning person should be replaced the floors were dirty the coffee pot still had stuff in it and the house smelled like raid bug spray bad. The down stairs was super scary to go down and the air conditioner did not work and when we would come back at night there were a ton of flies downstairs. My teenage daughter went to get a blanket out of the closet and a pair of panties came flying out which was super nasty.

My kids did enjoy the outside rope swing. But once again you get what you pay for.

Owner's Response: Some of this is fair to us, and some unfair. We have stopped using the cleaning person who prepared the place for these guests, and hopefully are doing better on that front On the other hand, there are a number of exaggerations in here. We don''t have an air conditioner on our bottom floor, for instance. It is cool enough down there without it. It could be that flies get into the house during the summer (if guests leave a door open), but no one else has noticed "tons of them." The core issue here, it seems , is our neighborhood, which many of our guests love but some do not feel comfortable in. You need to decide which group you are in before you book, or talk it over with us. New York has been the safest big city in America, statistically, for years now. Our block is very stable and kept-up, with most houses occupied by long-standing owners.. The Ganas Community of "post-hippies" owns half a dozen houses all around us, and maintains an informal block watch. If you go one block away (not toward the ferry or shops), the atmosphere is quite different. But this is common for New York, and other cities. Our own grown children frequently stay in this house when they are passing through New York, and we raised them a few blocks away. You can get aggressive panhandlers anywhere. The best remedy here is better communication. If you are coming to New York with a fearful attitude, please talk it over with us before booking. And please let us know about any complaints while you are staying, not after you leave. We will do anything within reason to keep our guests happy, if we know about it.

Staten Island - May 2017

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stayed. There were 4 of us and we had lots of room to ourselves, although we basically just stayed there to sleep. I've been told that the neighbourhood is questionable, but when you wake up in the morning and leave, the neighbours were very friendly.

We were hoping to do a lot more on Staten Island, but it took awhile to get anywhere (ie. we went to the Mall and went during rush hour traffic, and it took us over an hour on the bus).

Therefore, we chose to go back Manhattan daily. Easily accessible to get to many destinations once you were off the ferry ride daily. We did Coney Island, Yankees game in the Bronx, Empire State Building, Central Park and made our way to Brooklyn for an afternoon.

Owner's Response: It sounds like you did have a good time. We applaud your ambition to experience all five boroughs of New York, but admittedly Staten Island is easier to get around by car (and not during rush hour!). There is certainly all the shopping anyone could want in Manhattan, and the Ferry never hits any traffic.

Our neighborhood is known as either downtown Staten Island or St. George --, a lively, "up-and-coming" diverse area across New York Bay from Lower Manhattan. You can meet people from all over the planet within a few blocks, and taste their foods for a reasonable price. Then hop on the Ferry to see the sights. If you enjoy an urban setting where people of different skin colors and economic levels live close together (in harmony), you will fit right in.
