Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-9)

Our renovated 1870s refuge is the closest you can get to a comfortable old house in the country, but still be in New York City. The lush landscape with tree swing and play area allows you to switch off Manhattan, but it's just a 20 minute walk or four bus stops, down to the Ferry, then the greatest free ride in the world into town. You can see the Verrazano Bridge twinkling from our windows, and the sea from our street.

Indoors you will have room to spread out, cook dinner and relax after a tough day of tourism. Just bring your clothes, we provide everything else. Extended family and friend groups of 5-9 are our specialty. If your crowd is bigger, we have another apartment upstairs in the same house.

You don't need a car, shops and restaurants are a few minutes' walk away. But if you bring one, you will have no trouble parking on our street without the dreaded 'alternate side' hassles you get elsewhere in NYC.

Staying here does require climbing steps, and some spirit of adventure. You need to feel comfortable in a diverse residential neighborhood where people of many races and economic groups live close together, in harmony.

Add a romantic, adventurous twist to your stay in New York.

Despite fare increases everywhere else, the Staten Island Ferry remains the greatest FREE ride in the world, the most beautiful way to enter New York and view the Statue of Liberty and the downtown skyline. Ferries run 24/7, usually every half hour. The ferry terminal is a relaxing 15 minute walk downhill from the house. If you're feeling less energetic on the way back, cabs are available at the terminal for about $5.

Cheap Eats

Within a few minutes walk of our house, you can enjoy, Mexican, Italian, Polish, Sri Lankan and Senegalese cuisines, among others, at much lower prices than the Manhattan tourist traps. Feast on Downtown Staten Island!

About Elena or Craig

This is a genuine family business run by me, my husband and children. We live a few blocks away and love having our guests discover the pleasures of Staten Island. We are more than happy to help you plan your trip and make the most of our wonderful city.

Elena or Craig purchased this house in 2009

Why Elena or Craig chose Tompkinsville

Our row of eight Victorian homes stretching up a steep hill above the harbor is a unique architectural phenomenon for New York City. Trees tower above you and cool breezes blow on those hot summer nights. Many of the neighboring houses are owned by the Ganas Community, a modern commune, which gives our block a particular friendly, easygoing atmosphere.

You are in your own world, but the city is at your doorstep. And instead of riding the subway, you get to sail across the harbor, watch the skyscrapers loom out of the horizon, and the Statue of Liberty so close you could almost touch it.

About our recent stay at Vertigo villa

It suited our family group very well. Appreciated the little extras flowers, tea, coffee. My granddaughter loved the dolls house, was her seat the whole trip.

Was wonderful to spend time with our lovely family on Staten island.

The children enjoyed the rope swing and were disappointed not to see any snakes, when they went on a hunt. The weather was great warm no rain,so lucky.

Obviously an old property, but it gave us the taste of old New York economical for a large group.

Will be recommending it to family and friends.

If you want limited space and expensive prices you go to the Waldorf

Great stay for our NY trip!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six really enjoyed our stay. This old Victorian home (along with the neighborhood) has lots of character. The beds were comfy and having two bathrooms was great. We cooked breakfast before heading into the city, and really enjoyed the space after our busy, crowded days in NY. Plenty of very hot water came in super handy when it came time for showers. Would stay there again if we come back to the Big Apple.

Truly a home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We created beautiful memories celebrating our sons graduation. The home is clean and well maintained. We met Elena and communicated with Craig via email.

Vertigo Villa is an appropriate name. Many steep steps, good for the glutes, not the knees 😂.

We felt very much at home and had a fabulous time!

PLEASE stay here if you are Coming to see NYC without hassle!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 stayed here on our first ever trip to NYC. This house is charming and comfortable, perfect to have as a base to start and end or busy days of sightseeing. The location is really perfect- we drove down to the ferry station (use the parking garage on central) and for only $8, you are set for the day- not having to worry about parking again! About .3 mile walk is the station to catch the ferry. When you exit the ferry in NYC, it leads strait to the subway, train 1, which we took uptown to explore each day. The house was well stocked with fresh linens and towels, some food items, and cooking tools if you wanted to cook. Craig answered my call upon our arrival, and I feel like had we needed anything, he would have been able to help us- fortunately, we had what we needed! One little suggestion: stock some washclothes with the towels- again, I am sure if we would have asked, we would have gotten them! If this is your first time here, do a little homework beforehand and bring your sense of adventure! We also booked a city tour with USA guided tours- look them up!! When I return to the city, I will definitely stay here. Our 6 year old said our house was “Awesome!” She had her own room with a boat bed and felt really special. The middle child had the bedroom that was set off the kitchen- it was huge! Our oldest had the basement to herself- there was a lot of room to spread out and take breaks from eachother, and the living room/kitchen was our gathering space. We felt safe and at home- just what you want on vacation! Thank you so much Craig for a wonderful stay!

Full of character, spacious, we really enjoyed our stay.

  • 4 of 5

We were a family of four, and the villa was perfect for our weekend in New York. The hosts were friendly and accommodating. The Staten Island ferry to Manhattan became part of our daily routine. Would definitely recommend.

Very comfortable

  • 4 of 5

While it’s clear the the neighborhood has seen better days, equally as clear is that the neighborhood is at the beginning of a renaissance!

The home was cozy and comfortable. Everything worked as intended. Our dog (small 22lb Cockapoo) was welcome and the backyard was ideal.

The home is an easy drive to the Staten Island Ferry, 8 dollar daily parking and a 22 minute ride past the Statue of Liberty and you’re in lower Manhattan. Oh, and passage on the ferry is free!

The home was just what our family of four needed as a base to explore the city.

Fun time in NYC

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this home. There was plenty of room for the two of us and the 7 adults and teenagers we brought with us. Even with snow during our stay, we never had a problem parking in front of the house. Riding the ferry into and out of Manhattan was easy and free, with parking cost of $8 per vehicle for 18 hours. There was a slight musty smell in the house, but it is not overwhelming. The radiant heat kept the house very warm even with the cold temps outside. Plenty of hot water for all of us, even when we were all getting ready at once. There are tons of towels and extra blankets and sheets available. We accidentally left an item behind, and the owner's son was able to meet us when we had checked out almost 7 hours before. We all agreed we would stay at this home again. Thanks so much for making our first home rental such a great experience!

Our neighborhood is known as either downtown Staten Island or St. George --, a lively, "up-and-coming" diverse area across New York Bay from Lower Manhattan. You can meet people from all over the planet within a few blocks, and taste their foods for a reasonable price. Then hop on the Ferry to see the sights. If you enjoy an urban setting where people of different skin colors and economic levels live close together (in harmony), you will fit right in.
