About Elena or Craig
This is a genuine family business run by me, my husband and children. We are more than happy to help you plan your trip and make the most of our wonderful city.
Elena or Craig purchased this House in 2009
Why Elena or Craig chose St. George
Our row of eight Victorian homes stretching up a steep hill above the harbor is a unique architectural phenomenon for New York City. Trees tower above you and cool breezes blow on those hot summer nights. Many of the neighboring houses are owned by the Ganas Community, a modern commune, which gives our block a particular friendly, easygoing atmosphere. You are in your own world, but the city is at your doorstep. And instead of riding the subway, you get to sail across the harbor, watch the skyscrapers loom out of the horizon, and the Statue of Liberty so close you could almost touch it.

Our stay was just about what we expected for the price per day. It could have been cleaner and the mildew smell was pretty strong when we arrived.
Golden Wedding New York 2019
As a family we have stayed in over a dozen Home & Away properties and this was the most disappointing. Thankfully with this type of holiday you don't spend much time in the property. We were a party of 6 adults, 5 of us split across the two bedrooms on the upper level and one using the available camp bed which was set up in the lounge area. This was due to the quality/ appearance / smell of the bedroom downstairs in what felt like, walking down into a cellar. It smelt damp and unpleasant and there was a room off this bedroom which had a sign on it saying additional toilet, which I can't even begin to describe. No one in the party wanted to spend a week sleeping down there.
As in other reviews for this property there were cobwebs around along with dirty blinds/ curtains covering the windows, & areas out of sight such as under the bed, under the table in the lounge, were simply dirty. The standard of overall cleaning left little to be desired.
As for location, it was as described, however we went to the local supermarket on the evening we arrived and it was a very uncomfortable experience and we didn't feel safe at all in the neighbourhood with local youths/adults hanging around on street corners with a feeling of being watched. Thankfully four of us had walked to the shop, so there was an element of safety in numbers to a certain extent.
It was fine to walk to the ferry in the morning but we ensured we caught a taxi every evening back to the house and on every one of those journeys, there had been a police presence in the area leading back to the house. Overall the holiday was amazing and the journey into NYC on the ferry was fantastic, however this house is in urgent need of some TLC and the cellar bedroom area needs some attention regarding the damp smell and overall feel. We have no complaints about how the owner dealt with us before during and after the holiday.
We didn't contact the owner about the downstairs bedroom during the holiday as no one in the party wanted to sleep in the room regardless, so my 25 year old son kindly agreed to sleep on the available camp bed and my 28 year old daughter slept in the boat bed off one of the main bedrooms on the upper level, with her grandparents.
This is really not very fair. These guests lived at our place for a week. We tried to contact them several times to check up, without results. It does say on our ad that the lower floor is a semi-basement. Semi because the slope of our hill puts the sleeping area at ground level. Ventilation can be greatly improved by using the dehumidiffier we provide and opening the windows when guests are present. That extra toilet in the basement is not included in the two full bathrooms we advertise. We just put it in as an :"emergency" so that guests who sleep downstairs wouldn't have to go upstairs during the night. It is not easy to provide a space for big groups in NYC at an affordable price, so we have to use the space we have..
As for the neighborhood, it's not surprising people would have been curious about four tourists passing by speaking with Britiish accents. Nor that pepole "hang around on street corners" as September is still a warm month in NYC New York continues to be the safest big city in America. despite stereotypes, and police presence helps keep it that way.
Nothing was on my spectation
Nothing god bad electricity bad washer on laundry,,the heater very hot no privacy and the agreement not was like the tenant tell me about the pets not happy
It is hard to understand what the issues are here. One of their children played with the thermostat and managed to get the heat on in the middle of the summer. They also brought an aggressive dog without telling us. We found out because we wanted to send an electrician to separate the washer-dryer wiring from the AC. That has since been done. No idea what the guest means about privacy. This is a private two-story apartment.
The house is nicely clean. The area looks scary at night, but the location of the house was peaceful and quiet. It was easy to communicate with the owners.
Thank you very much. Our neighborhood is highly diverse, but out hilltop street is the most beautiful. Most of the neighboring houses are owned by a post-hippie commune -- definitely not dangerous types. Many guests have commented they feel more cozy than they thought when they first drove up.
First vacation to New York
The property is just as it was described. The stairs are very well explained. They are steep! Communication was great. My only complaint would have been about garbage accommodations but that was addressed when we mentioned it. The clear (for recycling) and black (for garbage) bags were not available but were addressed in communication. The garbage was not picked up on Sunday as indicated, but I don't always get my garbage out when I am supposed to either. Elena and Craig were great about communicating with us before and during the trip. Plenty of room for our family of nine and very comfortable. We had my husband and I, our daughter and her partner and five grandkids from 3-22. I would suggest buying the 7 day unlimited Metro Card if you will be there for a bit. It is only $34 and we only discovered it by accident, but it was a real value! Everyone we met was very friendly and willing to help us tourist to figure out the public transit system (that was my greatest concern about this vacation) If we make a trip to New York again, we will most certainly book this home again.
Thank you very much. We target toward larger groups of family/friends who might not otherwise be able to afford the trip to New York. We were very happy to make this possible.
Great location, perfect home!
Thank you for letting us stay in your home! We loved the location and the neighborhood. House was perfect for our needs!
Thank you. Please come again.
Our neighborhood is known as either downtown Staten Island or St. George --, a lively, "up-and-coming" diverse area across New York Bay from Lower Manhattan. You can meet people from all over the planet within a few blocks, and taste their foods for a reasonable price. Then hop on the Ferry to see the sights. If you enjoy an urban setting where people of different skin colors and economic levels live close together (in harmony), you will fit right in.
