Elizabeth is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. Andrew is from Grand Rapids Michigan. In 1977 we bought the homestead complete with cows. We grew specialty organic produce for restaurants in Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque for fifteen years.
David is from the Los Angeles area. He came to the ranch in 2002. He is our caretaker, and webmaster.
The ranch is featured in many magazines, such as Martha Stewart, Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset, Gourmet, Saveur, Country Home, Bon Appetit, Wine Spectator, Horticulture, Countryside, Country Living Gardener, Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta, Rocky Mountain Gardening, New Mexico, The Santa Fean, Santa Fe Reporter, The Good Cook, Exotic Beans, Southwest Passages, Fine Cooking, Denver Post, Los Angeles Times, and New York Times.
One of us will check you in and out. If you need anything during your stay, feel free to ask any one of us.
Elizabeth purchased this cabin in 1977
The geology of Gallina Canyon is similar to Bryce National Park and Sedona AZ.
Nancy and I stayed in the Wilderness Casita for several days in June 2009. People aren't kidding when they say New Mexico is a powerful place, the "Land of Enchantment". Well, this goes doubly for the Gallina Canyon Ranch. After arriving, we promptly fell dead asleep for 3 hours, then awoke to the magical late afternoon light in the canyon. I spent the next 10 hours on the front deck laying on the comfortable lounge gazing at the sunset on the cliffs, then the transition to night with countless stars above. During the next couple days we explored. First, a hike down the canyon, fording the beautiful Chama River for a visit to the Christ in the Desert Monastery.
Next, we hiked up the enchanting Gallina Canyon, easily crossing the Gallina River 14 times to the Wilderness Jacal (this would be a great place to stay!). Beyond lay more canyon, the mesa, ruins, and more, but our time was limited. Elizabeth and Andrew were quite thoughtful and stopped by to offer us a ride back down the valley. They are good folk- they leave you alone (this place is quiet!), are ready to give assistance when needed, are informative and easy-going: the perfect hosts. If you are flexible and like a little adventure in your vacation, this is definitely the place to visit. Just don't book it when we want to return!
Spending 5 days in the Casita cabin was an unforgettable experience. The coziness. The night skies. The secluded canyon location was exactly what we wanted. We were blessed with cool days and nights; clear skies and beautiful weather. The cabin was everything we expected, but the ranch was so much more. Hiking immediately behind the cabin in the national forest ~ hiking in the creek that flows into the Rio Chama ~ hiking up the cliffs with Tristan & Sushi (their 2 dogs) was the best hike ever. Elizabeth, Andrew and David's hospitality and graciousness was more than we could ask for. The cabin was well appointed and clean. Bedding soft and comfy.
The love of their life on the ranch was evident in everything we experienced. We hated to leave, but knew we would be back in the springtime to experience the Wilderness Casita, located 4 miles further into the ranch. David took us to the cabin and we knew it would be the right place for our next visit. Unplugged. Off the grid. Solitude and God's country. Thank you so much for sharing your little part of Heaven on Earth.
We stayed for two nights, one of which was spent on the sleeping porch, and absolutely loved this spot. The views of the canyon are stunning, and the fall colors were breathtaking. David was incredibly generous with the late season harvest from the garden - we couldn't eat it all! The dogs were our buddies and everything about the place was cozy and comfortable.
I really enjoyed my week-long stay, I was looking for a place where I could get some time to myself in the outdoors to hike/paint/chill. There are so many places to explore with endless possibilities. Incredible beauty, solitude, and quiet - just the sounds of nature - wind, birds, river. The color/shadows/appearance of everything changes so much with the passing of time/clouds. At night, when there are no clouds the stars are wonderful - you can really see them SO well and the twinkling is obvious, something I really need to squint to see in most places. I can't remember the last time I could make out the Milky Way! I was there when some storms came in during the day and they were a beautiful sight. Just be aware the roads can become impassable if enough rain falls!
The casita was so nice to come back to at night. It had everything I needed - good sized fridge, stove top, and a very comfortable bed/pillows. I used the sleeping deck to hang out and also to take a few siestas in between hikes. I needed it especially the first two days when I was acclimating to the altitude.
The hosts are super nice and were kind enough to share some of their harvest - lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, and eggs. All very delicious.
I hope to come back again! Maybe I'll bring my family. Maybe. :) Thank you to Elizabeth, Andrew and David!
The Casita is so comfortable. The Sabastians have thought of everything to make you feel at home. The outdoor deck is breathtaking! I can't wait to go back.
The drive to the Casita was kind of exciting, yes little bit rough. It kept us in suspense to see what we would see/find at end of road to the Ranch. What we found was just breathtaking. Beautiful, peaceful, everything we were actually wanting to experience. David was such a great help, sharing lots about the Ranch, and our stay at the Casita. We felt very welcomed. Elizabeth had for us in refrigerator fresh crisp lettuce of different kinds from the garden, a very nice chilled bottle of Champagne which we were celebrating a month early our 35th Anniversary, and the most golden fresh dozen eggs from their chickens, which we enjoyed for breakfast. The Casita was so cozy, clean, and everything you needed was available. We were free to explore and wonder about the Ranch. We had the most relaxing, peaceful time at the Wilderness Ranch Casita. We will most definitely be back.
Thank you so much for opening up your Ranch to us, Elizabeth, Andrew, and David.
GALLINA CANYON RANCH
Just to get there is a beautiful adventure. The dirt road slows you down, but it also enables you to admire the colorful high desert country with its scenery that changes every few minutes.
The casita is spacious and comfortable, with a well-equipped kitchen, fantastic views of the cliffs from the dining table, and a deck that lets you relax and read in perfect quietness. From this same deck we saw the most perfect starry sky at night, something we didn’t remember even existed.
During the day, the birdsongs were lovely in the quiet surroundings. The hummingbirds came to visit regularly.
Andrew and David were very helpful but not intrusive. Andrew brought over some of the most delicious fresh eggs we have ever had! The chickens are truly free-range and lay their eggs wherever they please, so Andrew has to go looking for them.
We enjoyed some time on the “sleeping deck,” but only during the daytime, to read and to admire the cliffs across the river. The different perspective from the sleeping deck presents a wide panorama of changing rock colors.
One time we hiked the road that runs through the ranch and got as far as the Anasazi cabin. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get onto the property (probably our own lack of inventiveness), but we enjoyed the views. On this hike, we were accompanied by the three ranch dogs; they made sure we were safe.
We also liked the “beach” on the Chama River. We hiked from there in the direction of the Monastery, which we could see from a distance.
We stayed a total of 4 nights and wished we had booked for a longer stay.
Ranch Casita is two miles from Rio Chama; you may wish to bring your own kayak or canoe. Our website includes many more pictures, our rate sheet, and directions on how to get to the ranch.
