Imagine an enclave of a storybook casita set among the dreamy landscape in the Land of Enchantment, in Abiquiu, New Mexico. That’s The Casita del Lago - a haven of luxury and privacy that embraces the architecture and design of New Mexico and the southwest. It’s a southwestern paradise on 22 Abiquiu Lakefront acres in The Land of Enchantment. The Casita is exquisitely designed space that celebrates the beauty unfolding outside with expansive windows, verandas and patios, creating myriad spots to experience paradise uninterrupted. Ultimate privacy in a luxury custom home.

THE CASITA

We know that where you choose to stay is a defining part of your journey. At The Casita del Lago, we strive to make our guests feel as though they've come home. So welcome home - and get ready for the vacation of a lifetime in Abiquiu, New Mexico.

Unsurpassed and extraordinary, The Casita del Lago has Abiquiu views, ammenities and comfort that will leave you breathless in The Land of Enchantment. Whether you are looking for a vacation home base to explore Northern New Mexico, lodging for your classes at nearby Ghost Ranch, the perfect spot to create your art, or a get-away-from-it-all vacation - The Casita del Lago is your destination. Conveniently located and yet very remote, The Casita is located between Santa Fe and Taos (60 miles northwest of Santa Fe and 90 miles southwest of Taos) just outside the historic town of Abiquiú on Abiquiú Lake, across the lake from Ghost Ranch. Located in a gated community that borders undeveloped Ghost Ranch land, the views will take your breath away as you drive towards the lake on private roads to reach The Casita. This IS the Land of Enchantment at its most amazing best.

The Casita del Lago is a modern house on its own 22 acres. You will have total privacy in your remote, luxurious vacation home. As your hosts, we will leave you undisturbed unless you have questions or need help....if you do, we will respond immediately.

RATES

Our daily price includes all fees and taxes (with the exception of the $125 cleaning fee and additional lodging fee if your party has more than 4 members), free WIFI, free cable TV, charcoal and firewood. See the Rates section of this site for more information. You may also visit our website to view all policies - including cancellation policies, hot tub use, etc.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION - ON ABIQUIU LAKE!

Why stay on Abiquiu Lake? It's quite simple: if you stay anywhere else, you will miss out on some of the most beautiful views in Northern New Mexico! Renting a home on Abiquiu Lake not only gives you lake access, but it provides you with views that will leave you breathless. From our side of the lake you have views of the ancient red rocks, the quiet and beautiful blue waters of Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River, Cerro Pedernal and Carson National Forest. Best of all, although we are located on lakefront property, we do not have mosquitos or other annoying insects (no more so than anyplace in the state in general). Abiquiu is a wonderful village but there is so much more to see. Outside of town you will find the major attractions - Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, Plaza Blanca, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, and beautiful Abiquiu Lake - and we are conveniently located near all of them. Oh, and yes - we do have cell phone coverage and cable TV for those moments when you decide to reconnect to reality.

MORE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE HOME

Casita del Lago (Little House on the Lake) is a secluded lakefront vacation home with lakefront access sitting on a river embankment right where the Chama River meets the 12 mile long Abiquiu Lake. This stunning thick-walled adobe style casita sits on 23 acres of natural surroundings and is crafted to true New Mexican style. It is well positioned on a gradually sloping hillside for privacy and it's close proximity to the sky blue water and 250 million year old layered Red Rock cliffs provide for spectacular one-of-a-kind views and pictures---right from your home.

We mean it when we say that The Casita del Lago on Abiquiu Lake is located on one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Step into a Georgia O'Keeffe painting right from your doorstep! This modern adobe style vacation home is like no other in design and amenities. Imported granite countertops, custom handmade Spanish Pueblo arched doors, imported Mexican furniture, resort quality bedding and linens, authentic southwest lit nichos, handmade Kiva Lighting sconces, plastered interior walls, radiant floor heat, air conditioning unit, washer/dryer, high speed WIFI, top rated appliances, original artwork by southwestern artists, an indigenous rock woodburning fireplace, and 4 furnished outdoor living spaces! The east and west portales are attached with heated floors and one-of-a-kind views. The southern portal (porch) just off the kitchen offers warm, sunlit days in even the coolest high desert New Mexico temps. And the hot tub will be an experience unique to each guest!

Although you can stay inside the 1158 sq. ft. glass walled paradise and never plug-in any entertainment device, this deluxe casita is designed to include them. A large LCD HD TV is positioned above the wood burning rock fireplace and speakers for MP3 and Ipod players are included. If you want to move your entertainment outdoors to the heated floor portales where there are as many outdoor living spaces as indoor living spaces, then hook up to the fastest wireless internet in the area or position yourself to watch the flatscreen TV, or do what I do, take an afternoon siesta.

The 6 person hot tub is nestled among huge rock boulders just off the western portal and it reserves it own spectacular views for itself, especially at night when the billions and billions of stars come out. For the more adventuresome, a short hike to the 'Stonehenge firepit' at sunset for a spectacular outdoor viewing and nighttime fire atop the arroyo is a perfect setting for your favorite ghost story--or fairy tale story for the little ones.

Extra care was taken to craft this home. It is a work of art in itself, erected without one tree being uprooted. And while the window space was maximized -- the Casita del Lago remains very energy efficient and green. Often, indigenous materials were utilized by local craftsmen. For you who have not visited New Mexico before, you will immediately notice the absence of noise, air, and light pollutants. We absolutely love it here and we hope you will, too. You can check in with us for more information about the area and its rich history.

For those of you familiar with the area, Casita del Lago is spectacularly unique. The drive down towards the water with the incredible Sedona-like views is worth the trip in itself! This is the area's most private and secluded resort setting; you will be amazed at the views that surround you and you will want to wake up early just to witness the break of dawn. Then settle in for an afternoon siesta on one of the outdoor daybeds; or curl up to a book; go down to the water; start a gourmet meal; sightsee (if you must); horseback ride; photograph; hike the arroyos on your property; draw, paint, write, dream, and much, much, more.

About Carolyn Calfee

We fell in love with Abiquiu Lake and the surrounding area during a trip here several years ago. We balance raising our family, managing our careers and trying to spend as much time in Abiquiu as we can. We are pretty much regular folk who fell in love with Abiquiu and wanted to create something very special. We love it here as do our 3 teenage kids, riding horses on the property with Hollywood stuntman Fred. Our goal is to spend as much time here as time allows. When we can't be here, we rent out our home so others can enjoy the experience. It is our goal that everyone who stays with us has the most perfect experience and we work very hard to make sure you are satisfied.

Carolyn Calfee purchased this house in 2009

Why Carolyn Calfee chose New Mexico

Quite simply, this spot on Abiquiu Lake found us and the timing could not have been better. There are only four Lakefront parcels in the area, and only one remains available for sale (and that is the property we own adjacent to Casita del Lago.) When you visit here, and you view many of the scapes Georgia O'Keeffe painted in their original context, you will understand why she could never leave.

What makes this house unique

Rare lakefront home on Abiquiu Lake. 360 degree panoramic views of paradise in Abiquiu, New Mexico! The Casita del Lago is built in traditional adobe style with 14' thick walls. The New Mexican charm is enhanced by the fully arched architectural doorways and the pair of built in lighted nichos opposite the woodburning fireplace. But it incorporates todays most modern conveniences. It is very private but also very conspicuous to boaters as it sits high on the hill overlooking the river. You can be as private as you would like to be, because you have 23 acres to roam. Bring your camera to photograph the vistas, relax in the two outdoor daybeds, take in the stars at the incredibly luxurious hot tub, light a fire indoors, or on the western portale, or venture out to the western outdoor pit. Admire the sunrise, or heat up the Eastern Portale and enjoy it from the bench. Walk down to the water for solitude or to drop a line in. Or just curl up on the 5' circular oversized chaise on the south portal and warm up to the afternoon sun. And those are just a few of the daily options you have at Casita del Lago.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Most grateful that this place, this magical place, whose us. This place -under the meteors, the white fluffy clouds, among the red orange purple cliffs and equally brilliant sunset - we begin our new life together.

Peaceful & serene!

  • 5 of 5

The Casita del Lago was perfect! It is very clean, well stocked and has amazing views. The house is designed beautifully with the adobe and has a resort feel. The owners have thought of everything their guests might need. Watching the sunset in the hot tub was wonderful. It's amazingly quiet and the night sky was gorgeous. We only had one night to stay but will definitely return some day!

Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Abiquiu casita! It was the perfect home base for our adventures in O'Keeffe country. The house was clean, thoughtfully designed and had amazing views. We were able to hike down to the lake right from the property which was a bonus.

Exceeded Expectations

  • 5 of 5

The casita certainly exceeded our expectations,(and they were high). The beauty of the home inside and out was exactly what we hoped it would be. The silence and solitude might not be everyone's "cup of tea". But it certainly was ours. We visit Santa Fe several times a year and always plan a trip to the area when we go. Now we have found the casita, we will be returning. Hope to visit again in the fall .Thank you Caroline for your "eye", attention to detail, and being such a great host. We can recommend this property without any reservations. Well Done!!! Bob and June Overholt. Texas

The best place in the world.

  • 5 of 5

I don’t usually write reviews but I must for this vacation rental. From the moment we contacted the owner until we completed our vacation, the owners were so helpful. The house is amazing. It sits on Abiquiu Lake and you have views of the lake, the river, Pedernal, the twinkling lights of Ghost Ranch and the ancient red rocks of Abiquiu. You really can’t describe how beautiful and peaceful it is at the home. The house itself is a joy to stay in. It is very comfortable and fully furnished. Even the pantry had seasonings, condiments, spices and many food items that we had forgot to pick up. The bed was very comfortable and linens high quality. Much of the furniture is southwestern style. Countertops are granite. The family room and master bedroom have TVs. Internet worked great, which we weren’t expecting. Really, the nicest place we’ve ever stayed at. Outside is another treat. They have 22 acres so you can spend the day hiking on the property. We went down into the arroyo and hiked down to the lake. You can also hike up the mesa and find a cool chair to relax in, overlooking the arroyo. There is an outdoor fire pit built into the hill. Lots of cool things to discover. At the base of the property there is a cove in the lake which was perfect for our kids to swim in. We hiked, fished, swam – and this was all before we explored Abiquiu. The road back to the house was a dirt road for about 3 miles, but it is very smooth - it has been well maintained, unlike some other roads in the area. The roads to Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, and the Monastery are also dirt roads. We loved the ride in to the house – very remote and beautiful. We felt like we were in our own paradise. There are other houses you see in the area though so we felt very comfortable. We hiked Plaza Blanca and Ghost Ranch. I also suggest El Golondrinas outside Santa Fe for kids – this is a replica (huge) of an old village and the kids learn all about life in the past. Very cool and interactive and our kids loved it. I can’t say enough about this house and exploring Abiquiu. We found this home online and it was less than a casita at Abiquiu Inn. We are SO glad we had our own home in paradise rather than a crowded hotel in town. You won’t regret it.

Owner's Response: Hi Mandy, We really enjoyed you and your family - and thank you so much for your awesome review! "The best place in the world"!!! That made our day and we are so happy that you loved it here as much as we do. Sometimes it's hard to leave the house because it is such a great place to be - and it sounds like you explored all there is to offer: the lake, the river, the arroyos, and you even found the chair on top of the mesa! Please come back again - we'd love to welcome you back! Carolyn

Abiquiu at its best

  • 5 of 5

I still can't believe the view from this comfortable home at the end of the earth. The gaze lingers on Abiquiu Lake, the yellow and red cliffs of Ghost Ranch, the serene landforms as far as the eye can see, the endless blue sky. Behind the home, Georgia O'Keeffe's Pedernal stands timeless and intriguing. It's a 40 or so minute drive to the monastery where wildlife abounds or to Georgia's O'Keefe's Abiquiu home in the other direction, but who needs to leave this place of rare beauty? You will understand why O'Keeffe was drawn to the area. On a practical level, the house is elegant yet in tune with its surroundings. Best of all, the host, Carolyn, is a pure delight. I promise, I am going back.
