Photos and Description of this Cordal holiday cottage

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5-7)

Cottage Mary Rose is a beautiful 18th century, white-washed, thatched roof cottage. One of Ireland's few remaining, it is what you dream of when thinking of Ireland. Nestled in the pastoral valley of Mount Eagle with a stream running through the peaceful cottage garden. We boast an all natural garden. It is surrounded by its original dry stone walls and fuchsia.

You are welcomed by the bright red double door. As you enter, you get the feeling that you have stepped back in time. With its stone fireplace and high lofted ceilings in the sitting room it is a great room for conversation and games. Antiques fill the cottage with traditional and comfortable furniture as well. It is amazing to think of what this cottage has survived. It has truly come a long way from traditional Irish life to having the luxuries we dream of. There is a Jacuzzi tub and dishwasher as well as a bright red Aga stove so you can actually enjoy cooking. Truly an ideal place to call home while exploring the many treasures of CountyKerry. Internet now available.

About William Harty

My family is of Irish descent. Our first time to the Emerald Isle was in 1996. I fell in love with it as every one does and knew then that some day I would have a home there.........a Thatched Cottage. Being involved in architechture,I had always been fascinated in thatched roof cottages. When I purchased Cottage Mary Rose in 2000 I never realised how much I would fall in love with it. It is my true passion, named after my mother, Mary Rose Bowler, I wanted to share this amazing bit of Irish History with others....

William Harty purchased this cottage in 2000

Why William Harty chose County Kerry

I wanted a historic thatched cottage off of the beaten track but close enough to tourist attractions. I am an avid gardener and knew that this location was perfect for a great garden. There are fuschia & camelias every where! The stream was the frosting on the cake. So dramatic because of the ravine and rushing water below. The sound is so calming and tranquil. I preferred the small village of Cordal because you get a TRUE feel of the real Ireland instead of the touristy areas. I was happy enough with the Church and Kearney's Grocer.....I thought all it needed was a pub......my dream was answered and Hughes Pub was built by Sean Hughes a local Cordal lad in 2006. It is a beautiful pub and great for local gab, a great Pint and a game of pool. All with in a 5 minute walk. Our great cottage has stood the test of time. I love sharing this peice of Heaven with others.........

What makes this cottage unique

Cottage Mary Rose is a wonderful blend of a living bit of history. Add to this a Jacuzzi tub, rain shower and hot tub over looking a stream and you have it all. We even provide WiFi internet connection. Large kitchen which is wonderful for entertaining. The Heritage cooker is probably the best method of cooking food. Besides the Irish farm table there is also a front patio for dining and the deck where you can dine with the sounds of the peaceful stream and song of the birds. Nothing beats relaxing in the hot tub at the end of a long day while enoying the stars above...........absolute Heaven.............

Absolutely perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We loved Mary Rose Cottage. Such a beautiful cottage with so much history. The attention to detail was amazing, and the beds were soooo comfortable! We lit a peat fire every night and it was wonderful. Denis (the caretaker) built the first peat fire before we got there and it was a work of art. We followed his lead and built them the next 2 night! His wife made us some homemade brown bread and it was delicious! We had it for breakfast every morning. It was the perfect cottage and the best place we stayed on our trip. If you're looking for a quiet man type cottage or a hobbit hole, this is the place (only bigger.) We really miss it! Only downside was the wifi didn't work, but hey you don't stay in an Irish cottage just so you can sit on Facebook all day haha. So I really didn't mind the wifi not working. Enjoyed the peat fires and snuggling with my husband so much more!! Love love love your cottage and would definitely stay again if we make it back to Ireland.

Cottage Mary Rose - Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

Cottage Mary Rose met all of our expectations. The old world charm made you feel like you were living back in time but with all the new world conveniences! Even before we arrived Eileen and Denis were checking in with us to make sure we had arrived safely and were on our way from the airport. When we got to the cottage they had lit candles throughout and set out fruit and homemade Irish Soda Bread. It was magical! I can't say enough about the caretakers. They sent messages throughout the week with suggestions on events in the area and to see if we needed anything. Denis even offered to stop by and setup another fire in the fireplace for us. The cottage was neat and clean and wonderfully decorated. I loved looking at all of the pictures and paintings as well as the unique old world touches throughout. We found the cottage was a good base for all of our travels and a short drive to many interesting areas. The hot tub certainly provided a nice respite a the end of the day. While the cottage is not near town (one of the benefits), we found good restaurants/pubs and larger well-stocked grocery stores in nearby CastleIsland. We would definitely return to Cottage Mary Rose and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic 'Irish' experience!

old Ireland at its best

  • 5 of 5

I don't think I can praise the cottage more, just modern to a point maintaining old Ireland. We loved our stay Denis the caretaker made sure we had plenty of peat to burn at night after a wonderful day of sight seeing in Kerry. First night stove was a bit of a challenge but one call to Denis and his wife we had it down. Also look in cook books (above sink to the right) all directions there. As always Ireland warms your heart.

Cottage Mary Rose

  • 5 of 5

Magical, mystical, memorable! My stay far exceeded anything for which I could have hoped!

The cottage was neat, clean, and well-prepared, and Irish Soda Bread on the large wooden kitchen table welcomed me.

Stunning gardens and Hydrangeas, Cosmos, and Roses were softly stellar. Baskets of flowering plants at windows and on the ground charmed. A nice deck connected the cottage’s backdoor with a lovely stream—relaxing, soothing.

The red trim theme of the exterior was continued inside by a delightful red antique stove in the kitchen that was balanced by a red sofa and chair in another part of the cottage. Impressive.

The mammoth fireplace with its massive cross-beam became one of the favorite aspects of my stay. I often reclined on the over-sized padded antique bench, leaned back on the pillows, and enjoyed the fire.

Another touch that made it feel like I was borrowing a friend’s get-away instead of being in a rental was the ideal sprinkling of antique photos blended with family photos.

A soft rain fell one afternoon, then the sun broke through to highlight the flowers and plants. The effect? As if liquid diamonds had blown into the gardens—magical.

In the evenings, I dimmed the lights with dimmer switches. Warm, relaxing, almost mystical.

The large brass bed was another plus. As soon as I snuggled into the plush bedding on the ideal mattress, I drifted into a deep sleep.

No review would be complete without mentioning the caretakers of Cottage Mary Rose! They didn’t only take care of the physical property, but served as outstanding host and hostess, as well.

In the wee hours of the morning I was leaving, while stirring the dying orange embers, a song I hadn’t heard for decades floated through my mind. At first, I couldn’t quite place it. Then I realized it was the end of the finale to Camelot:

Don’t let it be forgot

That once there was a spot

For one brief shining moment that was known

As Camelot.

I doubt that any place or experience could ever come closer to life in Camelot than my stay at Cottage Mary Rose!

What a super place to stay in County kerry, we loved it 👍

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here while doing a course at Gortbrack Organic Farm. We really loved it. The place has been really well restored and retains an old world charm but has the mod cons that make it very comfortable, and of course there's the hot tub. The garden is fantastic and has a huge decked area with a stream running by it. There also some lovely pathways around a mature and interesting traditional cottage garden. Credit to the owner for a wonderful restoration that can be enjoyed by those who stay there. Denis and Eileen are also lovely people to deal with during our stay. I can see why this place is popular. I hope we can come back again sometime in the future.

Amazing experience

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this delightful cottage for 4 nights, and we all wished it could have been for longer. This cottage has been lovingly restored and is in a beautiful spot in Cordal. Dennis and Eileen were fabulous hosts and William kindly responded to all my questions and concerns. It was an incredible experience to stay here, and to be woken by the sound of cows and crows. The hot tub was also a wonderful extra, particularly enjoyed by my kids. The cottage was very well equipped and spotless, the beds were comfortable and the en suite, though small, was very nicely done and much appreciated. There were 6 of us, and there was a good amount of space. We even went to the nearby pub one night, where everyone was very friendly. Nearly Castleisland (5km) has a couple of large grocery shops and restaurants. We felt this was an ideal location to explore County Kerry while the nearby Crag Cave (less than 10 mins away) was a great way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy morning. The time we spent there will be remembered for a long time, and I would go back in a heartbeat. I would give 6 out of 5 if I could.
