Photos and Description of this Cordal holiday cottage

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5-7)

Cottage Mary Rose is a beautiful 18th century, white-washed, thatched roof cottage. One of Ireland's few remaining, it is what you dream of when thinking of Ireland. Nestled in the pastoral valley of Mount Eagle with a stream running through the peaceful cottage garden. We boast an all natural garden. It is surrounded by its original dry stone walls and fuchsia.

You are welcomed by the bright red double door. As you enter, you get the feeling that you have stepped back in time. With its stone fireplace and high lofted ceilings in the sitting room it is a great room for conversation and games. Antiques fill the cottage with traditional and comfortable furniture as well. It is amazing to think of what this cottage has survived. It has truly come a long way from traditional Irish life to having the luxuries we dream of. There is a Jacuzzi tub and dishwasher as well as a bright red Aga stove so you can actually enjoy cooking. Truly an ideal place to call home while exploring the many treasures of CountyKerry. Internet now available.

About William Harty

My family is of Irish descent. Our first time to the Emerald Isle was in 1996. I fell in love with it as every one does and knew then that some day I would have a home there.........a Thatched Cottage. Being involved in architechture,I had always been fascinated in thatched roof cottages. When I purchased Cottage Mary Rose in 2000 I never realised how much I would fall in love with it. It is my true passion, named after my mother, Mary Rose Bowler, I wanted to share this amazing bit of Irish History with others....

William Harty purchased this cottage in 2000

Why William Harty chose County Kerry

I wanted a historic thatched cottage off of the beaten track but close enough to tourist attractions. I am an avid gardener and knew that this location was perfect for a great garden. There are fuschia & camelias every where! The stream was the frosting on the cake. So dramatic because of the ravine and rushing water below. The sound is so calming and tranquil. I preferred the small village of Cordal because you get a TRUE feel of the real Ireland instead of the touristy areas. I was happy enough with the Church and Kearney's Grocer.....I thought all it needed was a dream was answered and Hughes Pub was built by Sean Hughes a local Cordal lad in 2006. It is a beautiful pub and great for local gab, a great Pint and a game of pool. All with in a 5 minute walk. Our great cottage has stood the test of time. I love sharing this peice of Heaven with others.........

What makes this cottage unique

Cottage Mary Rose is a wonderful blend of a living bit of history. Add to this a Jacuzzi tub, rain shower and hot tub over looking a stream and you have it all. We even provide WiFi internet connection. Large kitchen which is wonderful for entertaining. The Heritage cooker is probably the best method of cooking food. Besides the Irish farm table there is also a front patio for dining and the deck where you can dine with the sounds of the peaceful stream and song of the birds. Nothing beats relaxing in the hot tub at the end of a long day while enoying the stars above...........absolute Heaven.............

Cottage Mary Rose

Magical, mystical, memorable! My stay far exceeded anything for which I could have hoped!

The cottage was neat, clean, and well-prepared, and Irish Soda Bread on the large wooden kitchen table welcomed me.

Stunning gardens and Hydrangeas, Cosmos, and Roses were softly stellar. Baskets of flowering plants at windows and on the ground charmed. A nice deck connected the cottage’s backdoor with a lovely stream—relaxing, soothing.

The red trim theme of the exterior was continued inside by a delightful red antique stove in the kitchen that was balanced by a red sofa and chair in another part of the cottage. Impressive.

The mammoth fireplace with its massive cross-beam became one of the favorite aspects of my stay. I often reclined on the over-sized padded antique bench, leaned back on the pillows, and enjoyed the fire.

Another touch that made it feel like I was borrowing a friend’s get-away instead of being in a rental was the ideal sprinkling of antique photos blended with family photos.

A soft rain fell one afternoon, then the sun broke through to highlight the flowers and plants. The effect? As if liquid diamonds had blown into the gardens—magical.

In the evenings, I dimmed the lights with dimmer switches. Warm, relaxing, almost mystical.

The large brass bed was another plus. As soon as I snuggled into the plush bedding on the ideal mattress, I drifted into a deep sleep.

No review would be complete without mentioning the caretakers of Cottage Mary Rose! They didn’t only take care of the physical property, but served as outstanding host and hostess, as well.

In the wee hours of the morning I was leaving, while stirring the dying orange embers, a song I hadn’t heard for decades floated through my mind. At first, I couldn’t quite place it. Then I realized it was the end of the finale to Camelot:

Don’t let it be forgot

That once there was a spot

For one brief shining moment that was known

As Camelot.

I doubt that any place or experience could ever come closer to life in Camelot than my stay at Cottage Mary Rose!

What a super place to stay in County kerry, we loved it 👍

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here while doing a course at Gortbrack Organic Farm. We really loved it. The place has been really well restored and retains an old world charm but has the mod cons that make it very comfortable, and of course there's the hot tub. The garden is fantastic and has a huge decked area with a stream running by it. There also some lovely pathways around a mature and interesting traditional cottage garden. Credit to the owner for a wonderful restoration that can be enjoyed by those who stay there. Denis and Eileen are also lovely people to deal with during our stay. I can see why this place is popular. I hope we can come back again sometime in the future.

Amazing experience

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this delightful cottage for 4 nights, and we all wished it could have been for longer. This cottage has been lovingly restored and is in a beautiful spot in Cordal. Dennis and Eileen were fabulous hosts and William kindly responded to all my questions and concerns. It was an incredible experience to stay here, and to be woken by the sound of cows and crows. The hot tub was also a wonderful extra, particularly enjoyed by my kids. The cottage was very well equipped and spotless, the beds were comfortable and the en suite, though small, was very nicely done and much appreciated. There were 6 of us, and there was a good amount of space. We even went to the nearby pub one night, where everyone was very friendly. Nearly Castleisland (5km) has a couple of large grocery shops and restaurants. We felt this was an ideal location to explore County Kerry while the nearby Crag Cave (less than 10 mins away) was a great way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy morning. The time we spent there will be remembered for a long time, and I would go back in a heartbeat. I would give 6 out of 5 if I could.

Idyllic cottage

  • 4 of 5

Cottage was just what we were looking for to get away from London. It's a beautiful combination of the very traditional and modern comforts. You couldn't meet friendlier locals! It was perfect.

Only down side is the cottage is on a main busy road and the fence around the decking in the garden is not kid friendly as our 19 month old could easily slot through the gaps and drop the sheer drop to the stream below.

Thank you for a memorable break!

Owner's Response: Cottage Mary Rose is located on the Cordal Road that heads up the mountain. It is a main farm road and not by any means a crazy main high way! There is a church, Hughe's Pub and Kearney's small grocery store on this road. Other wise it is just the local cows, horses and sheep amidst the gorgeous surround hills and mountains. As you can see many people have enjoyed this historic Irish thatched cottage.... We look forward to having you as our guests!

A living time machine whether you have roots in Ireland or not!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was beautiful with authentic and historic elements while also offering modern comforts. Everything one might need for a comfortable visit is provided with a shop and pub within walking distance. The space was spacious enough for our family of 4 but also cozy enough to enjoy a true family vacation together and a place that holds treasured memories for our family now.

From the moment we drove to the gates of cottage Mary Rose we knew this was the holiday to remember. Eileen and Denis were excellent on arrival and through out our stay, a pleasure to have met them both.thank you for the fresh fruit and fresh bread on arrival. A clean warm cosy cottage with everything at hand. This cottage is everything we had expected. we feel everyone should take time out to visit a place like the cottage Mary Rose. "Old with the twist of new" we can honestly say we feel refreshed after such a calm tranquil peaceful break."what a good nights sleep so peaceful warm and comfortable" Thank to William for sharing what has has made a beautiful place and also for the personal touches throughout each room the person garden book, and the story about the nettles were a fabulous read, we are keen gardeners and were inspired to have come across such a book. The hot tub under the stars with a wee cheeky drink is truly romantic. We had taken our rescue beagle dog Ross with us to Mary Cottage Rose he loved the garden and walks around Kerry. We will recommend to others and we will be visiting again we loved Cottage Mary Rose.
