Cottage Mary Rose is a beautiful 18th century, white-washed, thatched roof cottage. One of Ireland's few remaining, it is what you dream of when thinking of Ireland. Nestled in the pastoral valley of Mount Eagle with a stream running through the peaceful cottage garden. We boast an all natural garden. It is surrounded by its original dry stone walls and fuchsia.

You are welcomed by the bright red double door. As you enter, you get the feeling that you have stepped back in time. With its stone fireplace and high lofted ceilings in the sitting room it is a great room for conversation and games. Antiques fill the cottage with traditional and comfortable furniture as well. It is amazing to think of what this cottage has survived. It has truly come a long way from traditional Irish life to having the luxuries we dream of. There is a Jacuzzi tub and dishwasher as well as a bright red Aga stove so you can actually enjoy cooking. Truly an ideal place to call home while exploring the many treasures of CountyKerry. Internet now available.

About William Harty

My family is of Irish descent. Our first time to the Emerald Isle was in 1996. I fell in love with it as every one does and knew then that some day I would have a home there.........a Thatched Cottage. Being involved in architechture,I had always been fascinated in thatched roof cottages. When I purchased Cottage Mary Rose in 2000 I never realised how much I would fall in love with it. It is my true passion, named after my mother, Mary Rose Bowler, I wanted to share this amazing bit of Irish History with others....

William Harty purchased this cottage in 2000

Why William Harty chose Cordal

I wanted a historic thatched cottage off of the beaten track but close enough to tourist attractions. I am an avid gardener and knew that this location was perfect for a great garden. There are fuschia & camelias every where! The stream was the frosting on the cake. So dramatic because of the ravine and rushing water below. The sound is so calming and tranquil. I preferred the small village of Cordal because you get a TRUE feel of the real Ireland instead of the touristy areas. I was happy enough with the Church and Kearney's Grocer.....I thought all it needed was a dream was answered and Hughes Pub was built by Sean Hughes a local Cordal lad in 2006. It is a beautiful pub and great for local gab, a great Pint and a game of pool. All with in a 5 minute walk. Our great cottage has stood the test of time. I love sharing this peice of Heaven with others.........

What makes this cottage unique

Cottage Mary Rose is a wonderful blend of a living bit of history. Add to this a Jacuzzi tub, rain shower and hot tub over looking a stream and you have it all. We even provide WiFi internet connection. Large kitchen which is wonderful for entertaining. The Heritage cooker is probably the best method of cooking food. Besides the Irish farm table there is also a front patio for dining and the deck where you can dine with the sounds of the peaceful stream and song of the birds. Nothing beats relaxing in the hot tub at the end of a long day while enoying the stars above...........absolute Heaven.............

Quaint and comfortable; good location for exploring Kerry

  • 5 of 5

I had read the reviews for Cottage Mary Rose when I booked our stay for our first trip to Ireland and thought it lovely. However, it exceeded our expectations. When we arrived, Denis, the caretaker was there to greet us and brought homemade bread his wife had made as well as other goodies. The cottage is so quaint and inviting. There was plenty of room for the 4 of us (myself, my husband, our 20 yr old son and my mother), and the beds are very comfortable. There is a beautiful deck with hot tub overlooking a stream and the beautiful garden. The cottage was a perfect location to make day trips to Killarney National Park, Muckross House and Ring of Kerry. Castleisland is close by and has grocery stores and restaurants. Hughes Pub is within walking distance of the cottage and the people were so warm and friendly. In retrospect, had I to do it over, I would have booked it for longer than 3 nights.

Lovely restored rustic cottage

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable and cozy. Great place to return to after a day of exploring. Great base for day trips.Enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub and listening to the creek at night. Caretakers are friendly and can offer helpful suggestions. Wish we had stayed longer! We loved that we weren't stuck in the crowded tourist areas.Would definitely return!

Cozy and charming/Cottage Mary Rose

  • 5 of 5

Cottage Mary Rose has so much character and charm. 2 couples enjoyed 5 nights with plenty of space and privacy. We enjoyed being part of the local community verses the hustle of big city life. We had a car so we drove to a Ring of Kerry tour, dinner in CasteIsland, Killarney sights and even a day trip to Dingle by way of Connor's pass. There were a couple grocery stores close by for breakfast essentials. In the mornings, we often got our run in and the scenery was breath-taking. Very spacious deck with an inviting hot tub. Water pressure in the showers was excellent. Fireplace kept us toasty and relaxed. We enjoyed the pictures throughout the cottage showing the history and progress of the renovation.

Fabulous stay!

  • 5 of 5

Dennis and Eileen, the caretakers of the beautiful Cottage Mary Rose, went above and beyond in all regards! They did everything, and more, to make our stay absolutely lovely.

We (2 of us) were there with 2 kids and 2 grandparents = 6 people. It's a long drive from Dublin, and when we got there, Eileen had baked us a delicious Irish Soda Bread, and they had provided fruit and some little snacks and treats for us all. They had told us where to get groceries (only 5 minute drive to Castleisland), and Dennis had laid a fire so that the place was toasty warm when we got there.

The house was very clean and had the necessaries. The pull out couch/bed has a VERY thin mattress, so kids are best to sleep on it...more resilient! There is a pretty garden, a stream, and a large deck. We were not blessed with warm weather, but it was still great!

It's a 20-30 minute drive to Killarney and Killarney National Park. Dennis helped direct us to a good fishing spot for the boys too! Hughe's Pub up the road is good for a Guiness.

If you are looking for a quaint cottage to get away from it all, this is a lovely location.

You will NEVER do better than Dennis and Eileen! Thank you!!!

Fantastic family time

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin? My siblings and I were completely enchanted by the photos of Cottage Mary Rose when we first began looking for cottages for our mother's dream family vacation in Ireland. As a lover of old homes, we knew she would love it too.

And she did. We were a little late arriving because we had popped a tire somewhere near the Cliffs of Moher (woops, welcome to Ireland!), but Denis was very gracious and was there to greet us with a loaf of amazing brown bread and a warm peat fire. There were 6 of us and there was lots of space. We enjoyed our home cooked breakfasts and usually ate lunch and dinner out, save for a couple of nights where we made pasta, drank wine, and hung out playing cards by the fireplace.

We loved the hot tub! So much privacy and serenity with no one but the crows anywhere around.

If you are looking for a remote-feeling spot, without actually being that far from restaurants etc, this is a fantastic place. On one night where we decided to go out to some bars and take in the nightlife in Killarney, we hired a mini bus to drive us. It was 10 euros per person each way, really not bad.

William and EileenMary emailed during the stay to see if we needed anything and made recommendations of places to catch live music, and where to spend St. Patrick's Day.

I already miss the smell of the burning peat fire, the smooth wooden floors and the babbling brook in the yard. I can't wait to return to Cottage Mary Rose some day as our family grows.
