About Eric Vollmecke
I'm Eric co-owner of Whippoorwill Manor Farm which part of it has been in our family since 1950. I've traveled to over 155 countries and all the states but believe that this is one of the most beautiful places on earth in a region full of great American history. We strive hard to maintain a park like atmosphere of the home and property. Our friends and extended family love to spend time together here as there is so much to do year round. You never need to leave the property.
Eric Vollmecke purchased this Farmhouse in 1980
Why Eric Vollmecke chose Madison
Our family has been enjoying this area since my grandparents purchased the adjacent farm in 1950. In 1980 our father purchased this property and began working his dream to create a 'park like atmosphere' for his family and friends to enjoy. All the barns and buildings were refurbished in the 1990's, and finally in 2004, he began the complete renovation of the farm house. A new wing was added for the baths and the kitchen as prior to this time the house had no running water.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Despite the dramatic growth of the Washington metro area and the expansion of the suburbs, this property remains as quiet and beautiful a place as it was 50 years ago and yet it is only on average 1.5 hours from Washington DC. We are avid hikers and cyclists and we believe there is no better venue for enjoying both in the entire mid-Atlantic region.

A total of 9 of my family and in-laws stayed two nights there. The property was wonderful and nicely organized. We were pleasantly surprised by small details here and there in the house. Our group was from 7-year-old child to 70-year-old grandfather but all of us truly enjoyed the stay. There were tons of stuffs to entertain ourselves doing ping-pong game, biking, table soccer, etc. The outdoor table and grills were well prepared and super clean. We also enjoyed the fire ring outside which was also well organized. We will definitely be back with bigger group next year! Thanks!
Our favorite Family Vacation
This property is great for a large family. It has activities for all to enjoy, basketball hoop, a fire ring for roasting marshmallows. other sporting equipment, hiking trails, room for archery, even a shooting range, etc., The house itself has a kitchen with everything you might need to prepare meals. We love it.
Charming and Idyllic
This is a beautiful property, steeped in family history, and incredibly well-appointed and organized. There was also so much to do that we didn’t get to everything. We will definitely be back!
Great home with everything you need for a weekend away!
Ten ladies stayed here for a bachelorette weekend away and it was absolutely gorgeous, even better than the pictures. There were 10 of us and we had plenty of room. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. The kitchen had plenty of dishes and cookware and everything to grill outside. The beds were very comfortable. The outdoor area had plenty of seating to dine. We made a fire in the pit out back to enjoy one evening. It was about twenty minutes to get to get to the Old Rag trailhead, an hour to Luray for a tubing trip down the river, and 30 minutes for dinner out in Culpepper. Eric was great and very helpful, responded very quickly to my messages. There was even a few local beers for us made from the hops on the property, local whisky samples, and local treats for us in a welcome bag when we arrived. I would definitely stay there again!
A wonderful weekend away
We had an amazing time celebrating my husbands 40th and Father's Day with our family and friends. Some much needed time in the country. The house and grounds are well maintained and amenities plentiful. What a special place. We look forward to returning!
We loved staying here. Beautiful building, comfortable beds, beautiful property with nice trails, and so many things available on site for everyone to enjoy! Thank you for sharing your home with us. I hope to come back sometime.
Over four miles on hiking and mountain biking trails on the property to include a trail that leads to the second highest point in Madison County with a great view of Old Rag Mountain.
