The views are stunning. Beyond that it is a bit quirky with the steep staircases, mentioned in the listing, and sloped floors and sloped walkway leading to the entrance. If you aren't sure footed it might be an issue (toddlers, elderly). The furniture has seen better days but nothing I did not expect for a rental. The owner is very nice and was quick to respond when we had a problem with the shower. The handyman was equally quick and very polite. The area is great as you can get to Helen, Vogel State Park, Brasstown Bald, Anna Ruby Falls, all just a short drive from the property.
Seriously, without even mentioning anything else, this cabin has the most stunning views in the area, bar none. The main and lower decks both look out over gorgeous rolling farmland and in the early morning when the mountains in the background peek out of the fog it's like a Rembrandt. Chiaroscuro for days.
On the inside the cabin is clean, comfortable, charming, everything you'd want from a little A-frame in the woods. The kitchen is small but the gas range is great. Stairs ARE steep but my 5 year old could navigate them with ease. Literally none of that matters because THE VIEW.
It's just as beautiful from the ground. Head down around the back of the cabin, through a field of Queen Anne's Lace, and take a walk along the road. The cows are cute and curious, the neighbours are generous and friendly, and about a mile down there's a group of goats that will yell in a cute way if you talk to them (say hello to Paul, specifically; he's a good goat). I don't have much to say about Helen and the surrounding environs - yes, they're very cute, the hiking is great, take a morning to go fish for trout, but mainly pack your hiking boots and just go walk the grounds around the cabin. Absolutely, with no exaggeration, the most peaceful and beautiful walks I've ever had.
IF for some reason you feel the need to do something else - take a couple days to check Helen out so you can try different restaurants. We like Hofer's (there can be a long wait, though the black forest cheesecake makes it all worthwhile), Hofbrauhaus (great for people-watching, sit by a window facing the river), and Muller's (the best warming food after you yourself get out of a tube from the river). Charlemagne's Kingdom is VERY cool, especially for kids and adults who like tiny details. Windmill Dutch Imports has the salted liquorice you crave, and the De Groots are both very sweet and personable. Eurofood is fantastic for those of us who miss european sweets and the owner is GREAT - friendly and funny. Do the ropes course at Cool River. Check out Jumpin Goat coffee (bourbon pecan, so good) and the Nacoochee antique store across the street. Go in Unicoi Outfitters for fishing flies that look just like cute cicadas.
Owner Chris is kind and communicative! Rent from this man! One of the easiest weeks we've ever had (his Netflix recommendations must be bonkers) and frankly underpriced just for the beauty of it all. Highly, highly, highly recommended.
Great Adventure Georgia
This place was everything we were promised and then some. Perfect for our group of 7. The view was fantastic, the accommodations were superb, we had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Had 5 teens with us that thought this place was a fantastic hideaway of their own. Stairs were a bit steep, but we were told of that, they just got steeper with each days hike as our legs wore out, but I have never had a better stay in any place that we have rented before. I would so highly recommend it to everyone. With in a close beautiful drive of anywhere you would want to go. Shopping close enough to be convenient, but far away enough to be secluded from the world and all it's troubles. You can just sit with a cup of coffee on the balcony and let the world pass you by as you relax and enjoy God's creation. Everyone needs to try this place.
This stay had great views and located out of town but in driving distance to Blairsville and Hellen. I have teenagers and they had no problem navigating the stairs in the house. Enjoyed the stay.
Helen, Ga Vacation
We enjoyed staying here and the view is spectacular!
The house a nice view from the back of the house & I love the area that it is in. The stairs inside the house are very steep, probably not good for elderly or small children.
Thank you for sharing, we make that very clear in the listing and I hope you read it carefully before booking.
Choestoe Hideaway is a charming cabin on a hillside overlooking Track Rock Valley, Brasstown Bald, and the tallest mountains in the state of Georgia. At 2100 feet of elevation, the cabin puts you up in the clouds where the breezes are fresh and cool, even in the hot Georgia summers.
When you go on vacation, you want to be close to everything, and that is exactly what you get when you stay in this cabin. A short drive will put you in Blairsville, Helen, Young Harris, or Hiawassee. The Hideaway is literally surrounded by mountains, meaning no matter what direction you head off in, you will be greeted by the beauty and grandeur of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Literally on the edge of the Chattahoochee National Forest, the cabin is nestled back in the woods while still affording spectacular views of Brasstown Bald and the tallest mountains in Georgia. Vogel State Park is only 4 miles away, and you can be hiking the Appalachian Trail within 10 minutes of the driveway.
