Mountain Crest,Deadwood,Authentic,Hand-Hewn,Secluded,Free Wi-Fi, 5 Ac,100 M view

Bedrooms 2
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms + Other (see description), 1 Bath (usually sleeps up 1-5)

Beyond the 'usual' cabin experience... 'Mountain Crest' is a beautifully hand-hewn, non-smoking, authentic log cabin. Located 6 miles from Deadwood and 7 miles from Lead, from its mountaintop perch you can see as far as 100 miles. (See the video.)

The cabin occupies five acres on a mountain northwest of Deadwood, off county-maintained, Maitland road, the 'backdoor’ road to Spearfish, SD. While wonderfully secluded and private, you still have the option to enjoy free Wi-Fi.

This unique log cabin makes for a delightful romantic getaway. The trees that grew on my mountaintop are still there. They repose as a part of this handmade log cabin. There is something about the massive logs, the warm, cozy setting and natural serenity, the evening’s celestial beauty, and the amazing views. All of these combine to set human nature at ease and conjure up a special feeling of closeness.

Mountain Crest is well suited for gatherings. The acreage provides a large adjacent parking area that can accommodate multiple vehicles. It is a great location to come together with friends, entertain visitors, conduct family reunions, etc.

It is very clean and well maintained and provides guests complete privacy from the hustle of the outside world. A recent guest and his family have the cabin featured on the tube website as Mountain Crest.mp4.

Secluded, with dual access, well-maintained roads, this cabin works well to enjoy winter sports, delightful spring and summer activities, or to just 'escape' and 're-charge' one's self.

Snow Mobilers: Mountain Crest enjoys abundant snow fall. Given its relatively secluded location and being adjacent to national forest land and trails, it is ideally suited to have fun playing in the snow. Where else can one drive their snow mobile up to their front door?

The cabin provides excellent support to its guests. While delightfully secluded, there will always be guest support available to assist and answer area questions.

The special appeal of this cabin... I bought 'Mountain Crest' in 2005, a dream come true. I accidentally stumbled upon this unadvertised/unlisted property when I encountered its owner while off roading in my jeep exploring old settlements and mines. Watching eagles soar, deer graze, chipmunks play, or turkeys strut and simply enjoying nature, is something I always yearned to be able to do. By sitting on the veranda or looking out of the kitchen windows, you can, too. I love having the freedom to adventure out and not come across barbed wire limitations.

Why Tom McCord chose Black Hills

And why the Deadwood area.... Since the Air Force assigned me to South Dakota in the late 80's, I have loved the Black Hills. They are always open and accessible (public land), safe (no bears), and the people here are so very friendly and welcoming. They actually appreciate visitors.

The northern 'hills' are especially beautiful and have so much history and fun things to do. I very much enjoy my stays at Mountain Crest. I take great interest in making sure my visitors are able to enjoy and appreciate it as much as I do.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hey Debbie, Pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Mountain Crest and that it was especially meaningful for you. In addition to its natural beauty and ambiance, I strive to provide guests a lasting, memorable experience. Maybe we 'hit the mark' during your stay. Unique to Mountain Crest, Bob & Lynn are more than cabin greeters or maintainers; they genuinely do set the tone for our visitors to enjoy a delightful experience in the hills.

Peaceful Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Great mountain cabin! My wife and I stayed at Mountain Crest for 6 nights. The log cabin is in a very quiet and peaceful setting. We saw deer on the property almost every morning and night. Our dogs loved their walks and were very happy at the house. The interior of the home is very comfortable and clean and has everything you'll for your stay. The home is located about 25 minutes from either Deadwood or Lead (mostly travel up/down the mountain). We will definitely stay here again on future trips.

Owner's Response: Hi Rick, Appreciate you taking the time to share your Mountain Crest stay experience. As a vacation property owner, I routinely use the word 'guest' in correspondence. We genuinely do strive to provide a quality, fun, and unique experience to our customers. However, you, your family, and the others, are truly my 'guests'. You will always be treated that way. I am very pleased to know that you enjoyed your stay. Would love to welcome you back.

Mountain Crest Peace! Quiet! Nature! Beauty!

  • 5 of 5

Mountain Crest... My husband and I spent a wonderful time here!! The views are breathtaking!!! We arrived late evening but we were so welcomed by this quaint little cabin on the Mountain Crest. :) The moon was gorgeously full, the breeze in the Ponderosas so fragrant. Gave us that 'coming home' feeling. :)

Tom, the owner, gave us really good directions for the winding roads. My hubby likes to get a bird's eye perspective of the lay of the land so he studied the satellite view before leaving our home. Combined with that and Tom's very clear direction's, we drove right to the door.

The kitchen was very nicely furnished for a cabin. Full fridge, Keurig, lots of dishes, pans and little extras for that thing you may have forgotten.

The bed in the main room was very comfy! We were super excited about the electric blanket for that first night. Arriving late like we did, the heaters were unable to catch up to the chill quick enough. The wood stove was great! Only we didn't think to light it when we arrived. Silly us! We did enjoy it the rest of our stay smelling the wood smoke and hearing the crackle of a fire all while feeling cabin cozy warm.

The bathroom was very nice for a cabin! Full tub/shower, nice big vanity, big mirror, good lighting, washer and dryer.

We were pleased with the cleanliness as well. Lots of little extras, like fans, blankets, games.. things to make staying here more like home.

There were neat, unique features that you will only find in Mountain Crest. The logs used (if I understand correctly) were from trees grown on the property. Our favorite was the beautifully carved stairs. The craftsmanship of the hand carved steps bringing out the natural God made beauty - a true work of art!! The owner has secure handles on the top and all the way down to assure safe passage on this unique feature.

Tom, the owner, was so nice to work with!! We scheduled very last minute and he was so good to work with our 'sudden' trip. He was prompt in communication. Very clear in details for us to follow as guests. We barely arrived home and he contacted us about our security deposit refund as well as to be sure our stay was pleasant. It sure was!!

We recommend Mountain Crest to anyone who is looking for the perfect quiet get away cabin with many of the niceties we creatures seem to 'need'. So come on home to Mountain Crest!! Relax, breathe and ENJOY living in the moment!!

Owner's Response: Hi Kyle, Marla, Thanks for taking the time to write about your experience staying at Mountain Crest Log Cabin. Yes, it actually is composed of the original trees/logs that grew on that mountain. I know that I always enjoy spending time at this cozy, little cabin situated on this crest. Each time I am there, I challenge myself to try to notice a little extra natural something. It is amazing what one can see if they spend a quiet moment simply observing their surroundings. You write well and certainly observed a lot during your visit. (smile) I always want my guests to feel like they are staying at a comfortable place outfitted as though it were their own. Happy to know that you appreciated those guest-friendly touches. (smile) Would love to welcome you back.

A little paradise in the Black Hills

  • 5 of 5

We never know what to expect when we visit a new vacation rental but we were more than pleasantly surprised. All the reviews were spot on. This place is clean and private and comfortable. The kitchen was stocked with not only the essential utensils but everything is clean and well maintained. We used the grill on the patio and it also is clean and well maintained. Tom refunded the cleaning deposit very quickly. The road up to the cabin works out fine as long as you follow Tom's directions. We enjoyed the deer that visited every morning, and the chipmunks running around. We also were able to enjoy the wood burning stove in the cabin as a cold front came through while we were there. Tom has thought of everything to make the cabin an enjoyable experience.

Owner's Response: Very pleased to learn that Mountain Crest lived up to your expectations and that you enjoyed your stay. My housekeepers and me always try to focus on: 1. attention to detail, 2. how we would want to be treated, and 3. treating guests not as customers, but really, as guests. Hopefully, this approach is working. I know that we are more than just a 'hop, skip, and a jump' from Seabrook, TX, but we would love to welcome you back.

We just left, and already miss it!

  • 5 of 5

Mountain Crest is appropriately named, perched on the top of a beautifully wooded mountain, just outside Deadwood. The cabin feels solid and cozy, we marveled at how well made and well cared for it was.

Our kids (7 and 9) thought it was pretty cool to sleep in the loft, and my 9 year old daughter exclaimed, "This place is cool, Mom! You did good!"

We feel lucky to have stumbled across this gem, and spent a carefree week exploring the beauty of the black hills and always happy to return to the comforts if this beautiful cabin.

Fully stocked kitchen, plenty of hot water, towels, washing machine, blankets and pillows... it felt like home.

Thank you, Tom, for sharing it with us!

The perfect get away.

  • 5 of 5

If your looking to get away from it all, this cabin is perfect. Mountain crest is situated on top of a Mountain between Lead, and Deadwood. Watch the sunrise while relaxing and enjoying a cup of coffee on the veranda. While there we had the luxury of witnessing the northern lights overlooking Deadwood, a couple of beautiful sunrises, and many woodland creatures. The cabin itself is very cozy. The beds were quite comfortable, and the cabin was clean. Having a washer and dryer onsite was a very welcome addition, It feels nice to come home without having a weeks worth of laundry to do. Flat screen TV with Satellite, and HBO made the teenage sons day. Along with the ability to connect to our cell providers 4G network. The drive from the main hi way to the cabin was a bit nerve-wracking for the first couple of trips. hair pin turns, bumpy roads, and locals driving it like a nascar course, but after a few trips up and down the mountain we had a pretty good grasp on how to handle it. Toms directions were spot on, and like he recommends drive it during the day for the first time. I would recommend driving during sunlight hours always, as you can't see around the tight corners during night hours very well. Being pet friendly we were able to bring our four legged family member too. Our pooch Ozzy, enjoyed being able to run free, and smell anything he wanted. This was really a great whole family vacation. The only real draw back is that we couldn't stay any longer. Thanks Tom for opening up your cabin for others to enjoy. If we're ever back in the blacks hills we will book this again.

Owner's Response: Hi Derek, I enjoyed reading your well written review. Your fellow travelers will appreciate your stay description and your suggestions. I do appreciate you taking the time to be so thorough. I think you aptly described what one can expect while staying on this mountain top. (smile) I envious that you were able to see the Northern Lights during your stay. I had that same wonderful experience a few years back while enjoying a Christmas there, but you got to see this in August! I think it is a rare treat when the weather conditions cooperate and we in ‘the lower 48’ get to enjoy this sight. Thank you again for choosing Mountain Crest Log Cabin. Would love to welcome you back and extend to you my repeat guest discount

My idea of a perfect cabin experience

  • 5 of 5

This was our 3rd time renting Mountaincrest.....and it just gets better every time. We have rented cabins in various places in the US and Canada ( mostly Canada),for over 30 years, but we have never experienced a better place. The Black Hills is very beautiful, but also a hot, and busy place. Great fun is guaranteed...but you will be so much happier up on the mountain. It just makes the whole Black Hills experience so much better. Totally quiet; listen to the wind whisper to you through the pines.Watch the deer and wild turkeys.Star gaze at night. . Large BBQ and extra propane, wrap around deck, Satellite TV, great fire pit, games, Keurig for coffee on the upper balcony in the morning. Cabin is fully stocked, other than your own groceries, drinks, etc.It is evident that the owner and his caretakers have put a great deal of thought into the comfort and safety of their guests. Very, very clean.....and the owner is absolutely excellent to deal with. Tom is incredibly fair and just, prompt and efficient. Do not miss the opportunity to visit Mountaincrest; an experience you will not regret. A real gem....and I dare you to find a better cabin experience.

Nearby, one can hike, fish, bike, explore, 4WD/off road, snow shoe, cross country or down hill ski, or snow mobile. It is only a short drive to ski at Terry Peak or Deer Mountain or to hike/bike the Mickelson Trail. It is adjacent to forest service/public land, trails, and nearby rustic, Carbonate Road (back way to Terry Peak skiing).

Mountain Crest is located close to the fun, historic, and exciting communities of Deadwood, Lead, Spearfish, and Sturgis in the 'northern hills' (arguably, the most beautiful area of 'the Hills').

These communities also offer the traditional services one might expect, including parks, recreation centers, libraries, restaurants, grocery stores, etc.

One can easily drive to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, scenic Spearfish Canyon, or other hills destinations.

Other activities available: Cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, wildlife viewing, rock climbing.

Ski: Mountain Crest is a great location from which to enjoy snow mobiling or riding one's ATV. The area is relatively secluded, borders forest service land, and there is very little traffic on nearby roads and trails. One can actually drive their snow mobile up to the cabin's veranda and steps.
