Step into another world in this duplex apartment on the top two floors of a 140 year-old hilltop Victorian home. Relax in the evening with the lights from the bay and the Verrazano Bridge outside the window. Yet you are just a 20 minute downhill walk to the Staten Island Ferry, the greatest free ride in the world.

The house is surrounded by a garden and trees, creating a peace and quiet rare in New York, and a cool spot in the summer heat. Descend from the hilltop into downtown Staten Island, a diverse, up-and-coming real New York neighborhood with a convenient strip of restaurants and small shops.

Highly recommended for romantics, antiquarians, visitors who want more than the standard tourist experience, people who are not afraid to climb stairs. Less recommended if you would really rather be in a shoe-box hotel in Midtown for three times the price.

We offer three bedrooms, two with queen-size beds, one with a full. (That one is quite small, but cozy). One full bathroom with tub and shower, eat-in kitchen and large (by NYC standards) living room. Not luxurious, but comfortable. A view to remember.

The Ferry to Manhattan: The Staten Island Ferry is by far the loveliest way to enter Manhattan, a 25-minute cruise across the harbor. You pass very close to the Statue of Liberty and watch the skyscrapers grow enormous as you approach. The boat runs 24/7, usually every half hour. It runs more often in rush hours, hourly very late at night. And it's FREE.

The walk to the Ferry from our house is an easy downhill stroll. Coming back you may prefer to hop a bus 2-3 stops, or a cab for $5-7.

Staten Island: If you stay more than a few days, you may want to see the sights of Staten Island itself, New York's 'forgotten borough.' These include Snug Harbor, a 19th-century sailors' retirement home turned museum and cultural center, the Jacques Marchais Tibetan Art Museum, and the Alice Austen museum, a beautiful waterfront house devoted to a pioneering woman photographer. The south shore of Staten Island offers many miles of sandy beach and boardwalk if you want to take a few hours off from being a tourist.

The island is famous for its Italian food, but newer immigrant groups are making their contributions as well. You will find the prices for restaurants, like lodging, far more reasonable than in Manhattan.

Why Helen Shustikov chose Staten Island

We already owned one house in downtown Staten Island, when we came into some money and started looking for another one. Helen spotted this property by chance walking around and knew it was the one we needed. The owner was ready to take it off the market, but we tracked him down and persuaded him to sell.

What makes this apartment unique

This is a unique house on a unique street, a row of eight identical Victorians, all preserved intact from the 1870s (we think), set back from the street by an elevated sidewalk with abundant trees and greenery.

Our neighborhood is one of the more racially and economically diverse in a city famous for that -- with hippie cafe owners, struggling immigrants and infiltrating hipsters all sharing the same territory. Again, not for everybody, but we love it.

Beautiful property and super sweet owners!

We enjoyed our stay in Staten Island! I visited from Florida with my family. We were very grateful for the affordable cost for the amount of space! The walk from the ferry was great for me and my friends (who are in our 20s). But, I would definitely recommend utilizing the taxi service from the Staten Island Ferry for those who aren't very active. IE my mother did not enjoy the walk as much! Thank you to the owners for letting us stay in your beautiful historic home!

Nice house in a great location

My wife and I with our two teenagers stayed here for 12 days, travelling from the UK. I really liked the house, particularly the bold colour scheme and the wall decorations. It had everything you need from a holiday home and was bigger than I had expected. It was pretty hot when we were there, but the aircon units worked well. The neighbours were super friendly - always taking the time to say good morning. There was one guy there who feeds some local cats - I really liked seeing him each morning. We looked forward to the walk to the ferry in the morning and back later in the day. It really is not as bad as some of the reviews suggest - about 20 minutes each way, and some great views and experiences along the way - you can see the Manhattan skyline. Finding the house was easy - the instructions are spot on. It was easy to park on the first and subsequent days just down from the garages. The supermarket at the bottom of the road (Key stores) has everything you will need, quality is good and prices are reasonable. The best thing about the house was its location. Close to Manhattan, but on Staten Island which has loads of stuff to do that I had not realised - there's a great beach, a quite large shopping Mall and even a zoo. Given it's close to Manhattan though, it's so green and relaxing. I didn't meet Helen and her family, but found them all extremely helpful, and responsive, whenever I asked a question by email or phone. Overall we had a fantastic time - the only downside was having to leave at the end of the holiday. I would definitely recommend this property, and it is far better than the hotel option. We absolutely loved it!!! Thanks Helen for letting us stay in your home, and enabling us to have such a great holiday!

Adequate Place to Stay

I was so hoping to write a five star review, but I could not bring myself to do so. I think it is important to give a balanced review of the rental.

Pros: Great location! Easy to get to & from the Staten Island Ferry and parking was fantastic. Never had a problem getting around and there were various amenities (grocery store, restaurants, the public library -if you need to print- in the area to meet your needs. The owners are also responsive, friendly, and provided good customer service.

Cons: I read through all of the reviews and the responses from the owners so I thought some of the concerns were addressed. I assumed incorrectly and there are a couple that are of importance to note.

1) Only one of the three beds has a frame. The other two beds are a mattress and a box spring on the floor. Our children slept fine, but my husband and I slept ok. We did not get restful sleep and that was due to this and the second con.

2) For our family, having a sense of safety is high on the priority list. Although there are two doors for the main entrance, there is one simple lock which we used to lock the exterior door. No other locks were on the interior or exterior door. When I asked about the locks, the owner noted having trouble in the past with renters and the locks so they have been removed. I tried to come to terms with this response, but I can not. By not having an additional security feature, it prompted us to all sleep on the top level as we wanted to be closer to our children (hence the sleeping on the bed with no frame).

3) The bathroom drain was not clean. We try very hard to keep things orderly and as clean as possible. On our last day, I went to clean out the drain of the tub only to find there was a rather large, long clump of hair and debris that did not belong to us. I literally gagged while throwing it away. It is not possible for us to have made that large of a clump within our stay and was not fond of cleaning up after others in this manner.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay & had an amazing time in NYC. We only used the rental for sleep & showering so it wasn't so frustrating to have the above situation or experience occur. With that said, our deal breaker in returning to this location is the fact that there is not a secure enough lock on the exterior door and no lock on the interior door. When traveling, peace of mind is essential.

Hope these cons are taken into consideration and adjustments are made.

Owner's Response: OK, we have heard the voice of the people. We bought two new beds, and put a lock on the second entry door for extra security (though we have been renting here for seven years now with no harm to persons or property). So please come back and try us again.

Not as advertised - shabby.

“Lush, terraced garden” is a heavily overgrown messy property. Description of house and neighborhood is greatly exaggerated. Two separate, steep staircases inside (32 steps); 31 steps outside. Street is one-way with parking only on one side so we parked several houses away, then dragged luggage up all the steps. Thrift store furniture and drapes at windows. Upstairs bedrooms have mattresses placed ON FLOOR. Dangerous electrical conditions exist. Circuit breakers are overloaded, with only 1 breaker for outlets in house, which is where all the AC units were plugged into. Individual AC units could not be run simultaneously without blowing circuit. Missing window screens meant we could not open windows to help cool rooms (temperatures were in the ’90’s). Non-functional bathroom fan. Shower faucet fell off when turned. Upstairs TV not connected for use except to play DVD’s. Obvious dust accumulated under living room couches. Property owners have not invested a single dime to make this property safe or in any way inviting. VRBO should investigate this property before allowing it to be rented again.

Owner's Response: We apologize for some of the conditions this guest experienced, and have taken steps to correct them. We hired a new cleaner, cleaned up the garden, and are arranging for a new caretaker. We did repairs in the bathroom and completely rebuilt the front steps. We always have someone on call to address guests’ concerns during their visit. BUT, guests have to think themselves about what kind of experience they want from New York. Yes, we have a lot of steps (maybe not 63 of them), but the reward is a spectacular view across the city from our top floor. We do try to furnish in the style of our unique 19th-century property, while also keeping costs down so we can offer our attractive rates. We do have one large TV, and don’t see the need for a second one. If you would really rather be in a standard, tiny hotel room, then this is probably not the place for you. If you want a special New York house, big enough for a family, among the rooftops and treetops, then you may love it. (The people who stayed just 10 days earlier gave us five stars.) We have owned our house for eight years now without any electrical problems, and had our system inspected by several licensed electricians. (One of them lived with us for a few months after Hurricane Sandy.) True, our Victorian house was not built for four room air conditioners. But if you shut off the living room AC when you go to bed and turn on the bedroom units, as we should suggest, that should solve the problem. We value feedback from our guests and always want to improve. But this may also have been a bad fit.

Excellent and relaxing stay

I, my wife and our two year old son stayed for 2 nights at this nice property. Hosts were very considerate, who allowed for early check in and late check out considering our flight was late. It's very spacious and nice house, from house you can see very good view at night of the bridge. The house has 3 bedrooms, Helen also provided extra mattress, toys for our son, also lot of extra towels were kept. To and from ferry, one can take a taxi, costs about 6 or 7$, better to take this rather than bus, because bus costs 2.5$ per person. Staten island ferry is very relaxing, we took ferry the day we reached this property in the evening. Then next day as well, we took ferry in late evening, so while coming back, at night you get a night view of Manhattan. So take evening ferry, ferry drops you at battery park, where you can have a nice view of water along with sunset. Near the property, specifically we liked Tony's pizzaria, very delicious food. Overall it was a very good stay at the property.
