About Maggie Johnston
Maggie is the Dean of Education at Camp McDowell. She manages the McDowell Environmental Center and Farm School, as well as Magnolia Nature Preschool. Mark recently retired from 26 years as the Executive Director of Camp McDowell, near Jasper, Alabama. He is now a full-time carpenter, buying, renovating and flipping amazing houses. They are proud of the work they do to protect and educate people about the natural world around us.
Maggie Johnston purchased this Cabin in 1988
Why Maggie Johnston chose Talladega
Maggie lived at the Triple Creek Farm in Waldo for over 16 years while teaching science at the Alabama School for the Deaf. She raised goats, horses, chickens and bees. There is still a beautiful garden spot near the covered bridge being managed by a thoughtful neighbor. Maggie still loves this place!
What makes this Cabin unique
There is nothing quite like communing with nature in a beautiful place near a moving stream. Even if you are visiting for a special event like the Talladega Race or to do day hiking along the Pinhoti Trail, you will find it valuable to spend some quiet time just sitting on the porch and listening to nature!

Absolutely Wonderful
My 2 adult daughters and I had a wonderful 3 night Thanksgiving get-away at the cottage. We were amazed at the very well furnished kichen, bathrooms and books/games. Plenty of cookware, serving bowls, bakeware, silverware and every kitchen appliance and gadget you can think of. Even spices to cook with. Baths are well stocked with all you need as well! Huge walking/hiking areas. Plenty of outside sitting areas and chairs. Firepit ouside is great! All three of us were unanimous in deciding that this was the best family get-away spot yet. We will be back!! We want to go back in the spring/summer when the creek is warmer.
Thanks for the sweet message and also thank your daughter for her amazing artwork of the Waldo covered bridge... beautiful!
Great getaway
My friends and I had a great time staying here. The house was nice and well furnished with everything we needed. The location is secluded and the woods and stream are beautiful. We didn't find the trains to be a big deal, but they do tend to run more frequently at night. We will come back again in the future.
Much Needed Retreat
My husband I needed a week of rest and relaxation . The week prior, our home was struck by a tornado . After storm cleanup, filing insurance claims, we thought we might have to cancel. So glad we didn’t ! We enjoyed the quietness and cozy feel of the cottage . The morning walks to the creek were enjoyed by our dogs , Chewy and Bentley . We spent some time hiking at various places and did some shopping at local flea markets and outlets . Some days we had no plan at all !
Almost perfect!
Loved the place other than the trains. Maggie is great, checking in with us when we first got there. You can tell that she cares about her place and her guests!
Solitude
My best friend and I had a very relaxing week at Waldo Cottage. We love coming here for our annual together time. Hiking and exploring are my favorite things. Thanks Maggie
I love sharing my home with you!
Mixed bag
Property is wonderful,...house is comfy and spacious but could use some deep cleaning, and general tidying -up. And did I mention the TRAINS ??? not that I was counting, but 7 trains yesterday am between 4:12am., and 5:15 am.
Already awake due to all the mattresses in the house being "tired" and then the trains seem to never stop...
Owner was super nice and responsive,...but things fell a little short of our expectaions after arrival.
I’m so sorry for any disappointments you had. We have no control over train schedules and I try to be honest that there are trains. Sometimes none at night other times they are busy. I guess that shows the economy is doing well! I can tell you that I get more positive responses about the trains the negative. Seems they bring nostalgia too many people!
We just recently put new mattress memory foam toppers on beds. The mattresses are not old But wanted to give them a soft top.. Not sure but maybe you didn’t like the soft toppers.
Thanks for the suggestions. Have a great week.
