About this property

A Very Special Place:Privacy plus Views at Simple, Secluded Lakefront Cabin

This is a very special, peaceful place to spend a week--unlike most crowded, noisy waterfront properties you will find listed. The rustic pine-panelled cabin has a 180 degree pond-and-mountain view and comes with a dock, float, canoe and sailfish. It offers seclusion and privacy--far from roads, at the end of a long dirt driveway, on a quiet pond with abundant wildlife, no motorboats (they are prohibited), and a wilderness feel. And it is among the most affordable on the pond.

Despite the wilderness feel, our tenants get the best of both words: the camp is close to major tourist attractions and outlet shopping as well as some of the best hiking, biking, fishing and outdoor recreation in New England.

Center Sandwich is 75 miles from the seashore and Portland Maine, and a short drive from Squam and Winnipisaukee, with their classic tourist attractions: water slides, water sports, restaurants. Not far from North Conway with its outlet shopping and cog railway up Mt. Washington. The towns of Sandwich and Tamworth are classic New England villages with white clapboard churches and antique stores, and gorgeous scenery that attracts many artists and craftsmen. There's also tennis in Sandwich, as well as golf; and hiking or biking right out the front door, in the White Mts. and Chocorua. There's trout fishing in nearby trout ponds, and fishing, swimming, kayaking, and canoeing right on Bearcamp Pond, with its islands and public beach. At night you'll be lulled to sleep by the loons calling to each other, and you may well see deer, moose and beaver.

This camp has been in our family for decades, and we try to maintain a family feel to our rental of it. The ideal tenant is not looking for the typical 'DVR in every room' rental, but something that is a throwback to a simpler time. People return year after year

Reviews: Please note we are new-ish to Home Away so have no reviews, but we are happy to supply reviews from our old site (TripAdvisor):

"I stayed here as part of a ladies' weekend of artists who wanted a getaway for peace and quiet and friendship. The setting is lovely--we saw a moose in the pond (which is clean, cold, and still swimmable in October if you get the right weather) and a pair of loons. Hot shower and indoor plumbing, of course, but if matching cups and new furniture is your thing, don't stay here--this is a classic "camp," not a fancy Maine cottage. If you're looking for a rustic, sweet, peaceful getaway, this is it! I adore this place." --Oct., 2016

"This place is a steal! A number of friends and I went up to North Sandwich to spend a quiet weekend, and found exactly what we were looking for here. The house has plenty of space, a great large space with kitchen, dining table and living room for eating, visiting and relaxing, and of course, the lake, which is fantastic. The owners checked via phone to make sure everything was as it should be, and were generally very accommodating. I look forward to going back again-maybe even this summer for a second time!."

"Bearcamp Pond Lodge is a lovely rustic get away, perfect to soothe the soul. The pond itself (yes it is right on the water) is not only gorgeous and serene, it is quite large, much more like a lake than a pond. They do not allow power boats so it is an exceedingly quiet and peaceful and BEAUTIFUL place. The house is actually quite spacious when you include the "sleeping house" that is connected by a breezeway. We just used the main house which was plenty of space for the 2 of us and since you really only want to be outside here. The house is no frills just as the owner advertises, although the memory foam bed is actually quite luxurious."---July 2016

"Bearcamp is nestled on a knoll at the pond's northern edge affording spectacular mountain and water views and sun from the east in the mornings and from the west in the afternoons. The docks are located on both sides, making it easy to launch a resident canoe or swim or fish from either point. The house is fully equipped with a kitchen, large family room with a fireplace and a bedroom and bath in the main cabin; the attached bunkroom has two additional bedrooms that sleep 6 and a bathroom and storage area. Only 5 minutes from us Route 25 and you feel the special remoteness and timelessness that is so characteristic of the Sandwich, New Hampshire region. Walking trails from Bearcamp lead to open country roads for cycling or a well-maintained trail system courtesy of the Wonalancet Outing Club, providing access to Mt. Chocorua or the many companion peaks in the Ossipee Ring. Fall is spectacular but summer is also a great time to be here because of the swimming, boating and quiet reading on the shaded decks attached to the house. If you want sun and solace, park yourself on either dock and enjoy!"--2011

Great family vacation
This is out ideal place for vacation. It is simple, rustic, quiet, comfortable. We heard/saw the loons, even a glimpse of a bear on the other side of the cove. I brought my rowing shell, we used the kayak, brought an extra of our own, my husband brought his fishing boat - he and my son caught lots of bass, also some pickerel. We played disc golf in Sandwich (free but bring discs) went to Beede Falls and Madison Boulder (walks vs hikes - great for kids or older visitors) and did some more challenging hikes. Lots of other things to do, Center Sandwich and Tamworth are great. We're doing two weeks again next year - hoping for less rain!

An unspoiled retreat
This was our fifth stay: for us, this place is magical! The views from the cabin are breathtaking, and the lake is an unspoiled treasure. The listing is accurate: this is not a luxury rental but an old-fashioned camp on the lake. We love its vintage vibe and look forward each year to immersing ourselves in the beauty all around.

Quiet secluded traditional New Hampshire camp
We truly enjoyed our week at this traditional camp. The description is very accurate... no frills, but privacy, incredible views and quiet. The lake is beautiful and felt like ours alone.

Truly rustic cabin
The location has great scenic views and is very peaceful. The cabin is at the end of a long and winding dirt road and was not very easy to find as the number is posted on a tree quite a way from the main road and then we did not know which way to go at the fork. The interior of the cabin was mostly clean, but had older couches that need a deep cleaning. I was glad that I brought my own pots and paper products to use for our stay as there was no dishwasher and there were bugs and rodents in the house. We greatly enjoyed the lake, but had to drive 20 minutes to town to buy more paddles for the boats as there were only two in the boat house. Guests are responsible for their own trash. The local dump is only open a few days a week, so be sure to plan ahead for when and how to remove your trash.

I am a children's book writer, and wrote my first children's book while staying at Bearcamp (Little Beaver and the Echo)--inspired by the echo on the pond here.

My parents built this place in 1955 and I have been coming here since i was very little. I learned my love of nature from summers spent here, swimming, canoeing and fishing on the pond. That picture of me is feeding one of the generations of tame chipmunks we've taught to eat from our hands. (That's why the no-pets policy!)

My three kids and four grandchildren still love coming here. We live in Portland and it's an easy drive for us. We love to share it with

Why they chose this property

See above--been in my family for two generations.

What makes this property unique

You can forget about everything else going on in the world while you are here. I have done some of my most creative work here, as have many of my artist friends. It's a magical place for children as well.
