About Bonnie & Ron Wilkins

This picture is Ron & I at the top of Mt. Baldhead, a high dune in Saugatuck. Yes, we climbed all 282 steps to this deck on the top. Lake Kalamazoo is in the background. Great view. Lake Michigan is just west of Mt. Baldhead.

Ron & I ran Wilkins Hardware Co., a unique hardware store with exceptional customer service, old-fashioned friendliness, and modern convenience and selection in the entire ground floor of the building. We made our home on the second floor, raising our 3 kids. Now we share this wonderful space with you, our guests. Welcome, and enjoy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for a great 2 days. We thought the loft was lovely and beautifully decorated. We really enjoyed the location as we love to walk everywhere (15 miles on Friday!)

We come to Saugatuck area every summer and this was very enjoyable!

Unique and Homey Close to Downtown

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at the loft apartment for a couples' getaway and loved our time at this unique space. The loft was decorated with old pictures and portraits of the former Wilkins Hardware store and had great, above-street views for people watching. It was the perfect size space for 2 couples and had just the right amount of amenities for hanging out at the loft in between sight-seeing and shopping. We thoroughly enjoyed the puzzles. We would definitely recommend this space and look forward to returning to it in the future!

Best Place Ever

  • 5 of 5

As soon as walked into this building, we were in awe of the big open ceiling and gorgeous repurposed furniture, and overall historical feeling. This place was impressively clean. No dust anywhere. In the mornings, it smells like coffee and in the afternoon it smells like cookies from the shop below. There's tons of cool books about to read, and interesting artwork to check out. We had everything we needed provided for us including silverware, towels, extra blankets, coffee cups, and shower supplies. We just love this place and are pretty bummed to be leaving, but will be back very soon! All of downtown is right out the front door, all of what sagatuck has to offer is a short walk from the building. Super cool place to visit, very kind owners!

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful place for a girls weekend. The loft apt is right on the main shopping street. It is such a neat place with the brick walls and how it is decorated. Parking lot right next to the building which is great because with all the shoppers there are a lot of cars parked in the street. You would think it would be loud at night, but it wasn't. This apt in saugatuck is close enough to drive to Douglas, Holland, Fennville, and Grand Rapids. Saugatuck is a such a cute town. People are so friendly. It was a beautiful weekend to walk down by the boats. We are real shoppers and we went to Tanger outlets and then to Michigan city, in outlets. Not far away at all. So much to do. Definitely would stay her again.

Comfortable and charming loft apartment

  • 4 of 5

We came from Kauai for family reunion and stayed in several places but this was one of our favorites. Very comfortable, spacious, clean and charming. Not much of a kitchen but that wasn't a problem as there are many good restaurants in Saugatuck-Douglas.

Cute loft apartment in great area of town

  • 4 of 5

Had a great first time in Saugatuck. The loft apartment was charming. Very eclectic furnishing with the antiques and various rooms. Nice main bathroom which was very clean and good shower with excellent water pressure.

The stairs up to apartment are steep but they have placed a gate at top which was a relief just in case you have kids.

For delicious food try Phil's (perch, gumbo, fish tacos), Ida Reds for breakfast or The Butler. There is a great used bookstore right next store and a good new/used bookstore down the street.

Enjoyed beautiful weather and strolling up and down the docks and plenty of people watching. Nice park across the street and the apartment was at end of the main street so not as congested as further down Butler. All in all great location-great vacation!

Cozy, comfortable spacious loft! Pictures and description were 100% accurate. We had an amazing time. This was our third time staying in Saugatuck, and I have to say this was my favorite rental yet! Loft is incredibly clean, and owners were extremely helpful and friendly! Cannot wait to return, and this will be my rental of choice!

Oval Beach

For more than 100 years, tourists have sought refuge from the stress of everyday life in the Saugatuck/ Douglas area - a peaceful place where no one rushes and no one rushes you. They can mellow out in surroundings reminiscent of vintage, small-town America, whose hallmarks are scenic beauty and a unique collection of shops, restaurants and art galleries. For those who want to mix relaxation with excitement, the area offers a year-round calendar of fun-filled activities and events. No wonder the National Trust for Historical Preservation designated these towns as one of the nation's Dozen Distinctive Destinations!

The two towns, nestled among towering sand dunes, are bordered by the winding Kalamazoo River on its way to Lake Michigan. Activities abound on the two waterways. Both towns maintain public beaches on Lake Michigan for swimmers and sunbathers. Saugatuck's Oval Beach has been rated by Condé Nast's Traveler Magazine as one of the 25 best shorelines in the world and one of America's 11 great Beachtowns. National Geographic Traveler Magazine agreed, rating it one of the top two freshwater beaches in America. More recently, the Chicago Tribune ranked it number one out of the Midwest's five best beaches and Life Magazine judged it Best Dune Town.

In addition to finding unique clothing and accessories for your self and for gifts, and seeing a kaleidoscopic of artwork in the galleries, we love to hike the dunes in Saugatuck Dunes State Park and Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area. We also enjoy touring the winery, farms and studios in next door harvest country. Kids enjoy sifting in the sand searching for stones & shells, including lucky stones. For more info, check out the Lucky Stone Tavern within Saugatuck Brewing Co.
