About Marybeth Ray
My husband and I live in the coastal NC town Southport. We're both majorly into anything water related - sailing, exploring by motor boat, kayaking, standup paddling and just strolling the waterfront. We also enjoy cycling on our funny looking, but very comfortable recumbent bikes around town with our little dog in a basket behind us. We both love the outdoors and hiking in the woods. I work for the NC Ferry Division as captain of the M/V SOUTHPORT, A 180 ft car ferry. We work week on week off. During the off weeks, I'm running our small standup paddling excursion business. George is a former ship fitter/welder turned computer engineer. He's mostly retired now and having completed his 'dream shop' behind the house, is very much a jack of all trades and ready for any project. In the last 5 years, he's got his captains license, sailed trans-Atlantic and assisted on many sailing deliveries from Rio to the Caribbean. Our big project these days is refurbishing our 1989 steel Colvin gaff rigged pinky schooner. We have a fantasy of the Kitty Hawk someday lying at anchor off Mill Point.
Marybeth Ray purchased this Cottage in 2001
Why Marybeth Ray chose Machiasport
George's parents stumbled across this property on as they were on a trip celebrating his Dad's retirement from the navy in 1975. It was basically a fish camp - no water, no plumbing, no insulation, no electricity. They did a total remodel of the cottage over several years. Every summer they'd escape the SC heat, rent out their Isle of Palms beach house and enjoy downeast Maine and Mill Point. George and I were lucky enough to have to cottage passed on to us in 2001. Mill Point was a lovely cottage then. George noticed the floors had a slight list to them - no surprise, the cottage was built in 1930! Straightening out that list morphed into a total remodel as in, 'as long as we're doing this why not go ahead and...' It turned into a seven year project with most of our vacations becoming working vacations. But all worthwhile, as we're thrilled with the results. And we both find ourselves very happy 'just messing about' Mill Point. Oh, there once was a grist mill on the 'island', hence the 'Mill Point' name.
What makes this Cottage unique
From the first moment I arrived, I thought that Mill Point was magical. Everybody says that pictures don't do it justice, you've got to "feel" Mill Point. To me, it's the intimacy with the constantly changing light and sea and sky and tides and breeze and sounds of the sea. And while you can find this many places, at Mill Point is so very close and so uniquely personal and private. With the cottage having so many windows, I've been told that we brought the outside in. It's great on a not so pretty day, to still feel that connectedness with the outside as you're cozily inside. Mill Point property is incredibly scenic all the way around - great for just strolling about. I love the fact, that as a circular property, you can still have a fabulous view as you choose between sunny, shady, breezy & calm. Two friends that visited tell me that when life gets too hectic, they take a mental vacation by visualizing Mill Point. One friend that visited with me, not sure she would like it, after a day, said 'I get it - you can't describe this place, you've got to feel it'. She fell totally in love with the place and can't wait to go back. My 25 year old nephew, had just completed 3 days driving across the country from Washington to NJ. My sister coerced him into joining us for a week at Mill Point. So he got in at midnight Friday, we left a 6 am Saturday for a 12 hour drive. He was not thrilled! He kept saying 'this better be good!' When we arrived at Mill Point, he kept saying emphatically, 'awesome! This is so awesome! I'm so glad you made me come!' And he survived, non complaining, without phone and Internet! He can't wait to go back. Mill Point is fabulous for hanging out and relaxing and getting in tune with nature. It's great for kayaking and walking. Close by are some phenomenal hikes on Cutler's Bold Coast Trails. You're far from the crowds, but close enough (2 hours drive) for day trips to Acadia and Bar Harbor. It's one hour to Eastport and Quoddy Head State Park.

Home away from home. Relaxing, beautiful location, didn't want to leave.
Simply amazing! Beyond all expectations!
What is there to say but pure ‘magic’? Mill Point was everything we thought it would be, what others here have written about, but to experience it yourself is another matter. A generous cottage caressed by dozens of white pines and cleaved by nearly 360 degrees of water. When foggy and overcast, it’s beautifully moody. When bright and sunny, it’s a limitless horizon of tranquility. A precious stone that isn’t dulled in any way by the need to be conservative about water usage or the lack of electricity. If anything, the allure is magnified by the absence of those conveniences. Our entire family of 5 adored it, the beach and privacy. The only improvement i would recommend is upgrading the grill, which wasn’t functional and could use a serious cleaning. Stay here and it will change you.
Kevin, thanks so much for your poetic review. You captured well Mill Point’s magic. I’m so happy all of your family enjoyed it.
I appreciate you letting me know about the grill. It was functional when we were there in May and hadn’t heard otherwise. Sorry you did not have use of it. I’ll get a new one headed that way.
Great escape to the coast
One of the best place I have stayed to escape the constant drum of daily high tech. That is why I return every year. Love this place.
Glad to have you back every year (and often twice a year!) Shel.
Less is more
It was a delightful location to enjoy the quiet and beauty of nature with no electricity or cell or Internet.
The cottage is located on a private peninsula, at the mouth of Machias bay on the 'Point of Maine". It is in the Starboard community, 14 miles downriver from Machias, 8 miles from Machiasport, 100 miles east of Bangor, 70 miles northeast of Bar Harbor, and 40 miles from the Canadian border.
