Overview

About the property

1 bedroom, 1 bath, sleeps 2

Historic Hockaday Cottage nestled behind the main house on Spring Street is right in the heart of the city cradled in a beautiful private garden and yet only steps to the action of the downtown area. The cottage is 2 story with a sitting area and bedroom upstairs which houses a four poster bed with down bedding. The full kitchen and bath are downstairs. Bath has a soaking tub and shower which sits under an antique stained glass window.

The cottage was originally a carriage house for horses and carriage storage for the original owner Homer McLaughlin and his family in the 1880's. Later he turned the top floor into a small local grocery where the gentlemen would sit beside the wood stove and play cards. When we restored the cottage we found old newspapers and playing cards in the walls as well as tobacco stains on the floors around the original wood burning stove. I can just imagine the stories that were made up in that room......

Why Joe Joy chose Arkansas

We always loved Eureka Springs and visited for years before deciding to move. Spring Street is the main street thru the historic district of town. While being only blocks from the downtown area, it is also very quite and private.

Cozy Cottage in a Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect spot for getting to know Eureka Springs. The cottage had everything we needed and was very comfortable, just as advertised. The owners are super nice and we would definitely stay here again!

Perfect Cottage for a weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

My girl friend and I spent the weekend in the hockaday cottage and could asked for a better place. Close to Historic downtown, its own private parking and secluded feel!

Right at Home!

What a cozy cottage! My husband and I felt right at home during our stay. Nestled away on a quiet street, but close to everything that you would want to do! What a perfect getaway!

"The Perfect Honeymoon"

  • 5 of 5

I really enjoyed my stay at the Hockaday Cottage. Its was very cozy and comfortable there, and we enjoyed every minute. This was the perfect place to go for a Honeymoon. Everything from restaurants to grocery store's were right in the area where the Cottage is so we did not have to travel far at all. Everything was perfect!

Hockaday Cottage

  • 3 of 5

The cottage was nestled in a cute spot directly off of the historic loop, which offered great access to the downtown shopping and restaurants. The cottage was cleaned well, however a few things made me drop the rating to three stars. The cottage is obviously old, and due to the nature of it's age, the top level's floor sinks towards the middle. We were a little concerned with the stability of the cottage, as the lower level's ceiling is also bowing down. My husband is a civil engineer, and was concerned.

Secondly, breakfast was only provided for the first morning. We were disappointed as this cottage is advertised as a bed and breakfast, and although a large bottle of OJ was provided, only two muffins were given for our 4 night stay. Thirdly, there seems to be a bug problem. Any dishes placed in the sink almost immediately attracted ants coming from the drain (even after being sprayed down). There were even ants in the refrigerator when we arrived.

We seemed to have a significant issue with spiders during our stay. We did not notice any upstairs (although there were a few flying bugs upstairs), but almost every time we went to the restroom there were LARGE spiders. There are a few holes in the floor on the upper level, and the bathroom window has a hole which may let the bugs in. We actually checked our belongings for spiders before leaving to make sure we did not bring any home with us. The last day, the spiders were so bad, we considered staying elsewhere.

The convenience of the cottage to the city was wonderful, the atmosphere cozy, but the issues listed above would prevent us from staying here until the issues were resolved.

Owner's Response: It is distressing to see this review especially since there was no mention to us of any problem and we were on property the whole time. As for the structural stability, the cottage has been checked by the city and passed on all accounts. We would hope that if a customer had seen a spider that they would have said something to us since we pay a company to spray each month. Again, I apologize that your stay was not up to your expectations.
