Despite getting off on the wrong foot due to a miscommunication, Cheryl and Rich were excellent hosts and accommodating. We so appreciated the beautiful bouquets Cheryl had around the house and her lovely photographs. The school house is beautiful and unique and a nice setting off the beaten path. Good internet service and very comfortable bed.

Unfortunately, we happened to rent on a very hot weekend. Because there is only one window that opens on the second floor (and that window you need a step stool to actually look out), the cottage was pretty stuffy. The AC unit was inefficient and really we hate AC and wanted to hear crickets. Because downstairs is a beautifully preserved historic museum, it was not possible to open those windows (no screens). We would have liked to hang out there more. Therefore we chose to NOT spend really any time in this cottage besides sleeping (we put a lot of mileage on the car this weekend). I had hoped to enjoy some time reading and drawing and brought books and art supplies, but the cottage was just not conducive to that (I enjoy lots of light and looking out the window).

My only other issue is that we felt uncomfortable cooking there with all the fresh local produce as we had hoped. I totally get their concern about the holding tank and not to use much water upstairs where the kitchen is (we also have a holding tank at our cottage) so we ended up eating out lunch and dinners, which is not what we wanted and is why we booked through VRBO. FYI the bathroom is downstairs and there is no issue with water usage there. Additionally I would suggest buying a tea pot to boil water for tea.

I recommend this place for those who don't want to cook and have plans to be out hiking or sight seeing during the day (there is a ton to do in the Berkshires). It is really pretty and the hosts are accommodating. Additionally, it is a unique kind of rental especially for those who love Americana. I do not recommend it for those who want a house to hang around during the day to say read or enjoy natural beauty from their window or deck. But I think many people would enjoy this rental.

The Stone School House is a sweet piece of history established in 1832(?). It was very charming, clean, comfortable, well appointed and just a pleasure for my husband, teenage son and me to retreat to for sleeping, meals, reading and playing games. There is great hiking just a mile or so up the road to Mount Greylock. Short or longer self guided hikes are available for the novice and more experienced. Trails are well marked.

Rich and Cheryl were very easy to deal with and accomodating. We will surely be back again and recommend this lovely, rustic and yet clean and peaceful cottage without reservation.

Lovely Stone School House in the Berkshires

  • 5 of 5

This is a truly charming and unique property, in a lovely country setting. Rich and Cheryl have lovingly realized a historic preservation matched with a spacious, comfortable, and modern living space. We enjoyed ourselves very much, with loads of room to spread out, and lots to explore in the area. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a historic property, and is looking for some R&R in this lovely corner of the Berkshires.

Charming and Memorable

  • 5 of 5

My Mom and I planned a New England tour this Summer and we were lucky enough to find the Stone School Cottage. Cheryl and Rich were super helpful and easy to work with. The Stone School Cottage had so much charm and was so unique that it made this portion of our trip days to remember. We spent most of our days traveling to the Brimfield Flea Market and had the best time. It was a distance (about 1.5 hours) from Lanesboro to Brimfield, but the easy interstate access worked well for us. We loved the charming schoolhouse set-up and the history of the place. We loved the grilled muffins at Bob's Country Kitchen and went there every morning for breakfast. If we go back to the Berkshires we will definitely want a repeat stay.

As Imagined

  • 5 of 5

We have four boys & in an attempt to create a lasting memory for them, we booked The Stone School Cottage for a long weekend before the summer ended. Mission accomplished. The place was perfect and Cheryl & Rich were as pleasant and helpful as can be. I've always loved this part of the Berkshires. I didn't have time to hike Mount Greylock in earnest, but we spent a good while at the summit (such a nice drive). The boys insisted on Krispy Cone (baby took his first steps there) and swimming at Margaret Lindley Park at least once a day. But what they'll remember most is "the schoolhouse".
