Overview

About the property

Farmhouse, 6 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 11-14)

Lavender Hill Farm is well known on Vashon Island for our U-Cut lavender stand and farm store, open from late June through early August. The property has 1500 lavender plants and more than 15 varieties, as well as beautiful gardens and stunning views. Come vacation in this tranquil setting in a 1930's farmhouse, thoughtfully updated and spacious enough for a reunion of friends and family. The long farmhouse porch is the perfect spot for morning coffee overlooking the gardens, fields, Quartermaster Harbor and Mount Rainier. Listen to the bees as you stroll through the fields and wander into the town of Burton, just a five minute walk, for supplies, coffee, and some browsing or a meal on the deck of the Quartermaster Inn. Inner and Outer Quartermaster Harbor is a short walk.

The house is light and bright, with nicely appointed guestrooms and three bathrooms for guests. The kitchen works for a crowd, with two ovens, a large center island, 6 burner cook top and large pantry - and there's a second fridge in the basement. The living room has two seating areas, there are two tables in the dining room and the long porch table seats twelve.

Enjoy the stars at night, the quiet, and spend your days biking, riding horses, kayaking or just finishing a book or writing one (wireless internet throughout the house). The island has a movie theatre, movie rental (and you've got cable as well) and many concerts, performances and gatherings to keep you as active as you like.

About Cathy MacNeal

Tom works as the head of a labor union local in Northern California and Cathy is an actor who also runs a non-profit providing education in Cambodia, where we adopted our two younger daughters. We also have a grown daughter and son. Tom is also a writer of slang books - we live in Berkeley, California during the school year and hope to retire to Vashon eventually. We have learned a lot about lavender in ten years and love our time on Vashon.

Cathy MacNeal purchased this farmhouse in 2006

Why Cathy MacNeal chose Vashon Island

I've been visiting Vashon since 1994, when good friends moved here from Los Angeles. It's a very special place. Tom and I bought a small cottage in 2003 and fell in love with the lavender farm when we came to pick lavender. In 2006, we were lucky enough to buy it. We kept the previous owners' tradition of opening a U-Cut stand and farm store and have learned a lot about lavender. For three years, we participated in the lavender farm tour, a wonderful weekend with 2500 visitors coming to enjoy the lavender. Each year we run our lavender farm business from mid-June through July, with the rest of the year available for vacation rentals. We love our time on Vashon.

What makes this farmhouse unique

What do I love most about Lavender Hill Farm? The view is amazing - Mt. Rainier, the boats in the harbor, the lavender. We think of it as Maine and Provence rolled into one, with snow-capped mountains as a bonus. It's quiet and the stars shine bright. I love working with the lavender - very relaxing. The house is big - it's so cheerful and so many places to curl up with a book. There's room for a lot of guests and the porch is the perfect gathering place! I soak in the claw foot tub in the master bedroom and then sink into the king-size bed. Truly a vacation from our lives in the Bay Area - and no traffic! It's also so easy to get here. The airport is a 20 minute cab ride or 30 minute bus ride to the ferry, and the island bus comes to our corner (and sometimes right past the house). The island has good restaurants, an arts scene, pools, and lots of opportunities for biking and hiking.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Everything was absolutely wonderful! Our friends and family loved the Lavender House. One of my friends said she wants to organize her family reunion there next year!

Thank you for providing such a special place that is so homey but elegant.

Comfortable Beautiful Stay at Lavender Hill Farm

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the most incredible few days at Lavender Hill Farm. Cathy (owner) and Janet (house manager) were both kind and professional and pleasant throughout the planning. The house was adorable with the most AMAZING views! Everything was spotless! The windows were sparkling and the views out each one was spectacular. We had a small family celebration, and we are all still talking about how wonderful it was! Six bedrooms! All of our guests commented on how comfortable the beds were. It really is the sweetest most darling place.

Incredible island experience for a family reunion

  • 5 of 5

Lavender Hill Farm is an exquisite way to show your family the beauty of Vashon Island. When you're not enjoying views of Rainier from the deck, or soaking up the sun surrounded by lavender, you'll be loving the clean decor of the house, the warm sunlight streaming in through large windows and the incredibly stocked kitchen.

My family is Italian, and we LOVE to cook. This kitchen had everything and more that we were looking for. We baked, barbecued, made cakes and cookies for a tea party, canned some krauts and veggies, hosted a surprise birthday party - if you love to cook, this is the place for you.

The bedrooms were all so comfortable and large. With a Martha Stewart meets Laura Ingalls Wilder vibe, you're going to be comfortable wherever you stay. The master bath offers the perfect place for a girls' night (i.e. facials with cucumbers and bath robes), and an incredible view from the bedroom. The deck is a perfect place for a cup of coffee and a good book, and the yard is excellent for an evening meal with wine and music. Basically, this house will accommodate whatever you want to do. And if you have any questions, Jannett is so helpful and will readily answer any questions or offer help if you need it.

The fireplace and dining room offered the perfect place for our family to sit and talk, look at photos and play fun games. This house helped us to slow down and enjoy being together, sharing stories and memories. Some members of the family thought of going into Seattle, but Vashon presented us with so many fun activities and the house offered such warmth and character, that we never left.

I live on Vashon, and I would recommend this beautiful home to anyone who is looking for a Pacific Northwest Island getaway. You're only 15 minutes from town, and if you need something in a pinch, there is a small general store just steps away. But really, you're getting away from it all and soaking up those island vibes. You will not regret visiting Lavender Hill. I promise!

A perfect get away for a group of 5 or 6 ( or more!). Comfortable beds, clean rooms, large kitchen that is very well-stocked (if you want to cook), exceptional views from the large sitting porch....and lavender!

Comfortable, casually elegant place

  • 5 of 5

My extended family stayed this past weekend. It was lovely, comfortable and animal-hair free. My nephews basked on the porch, marveled at the view, and lived the neighborhood.
