About the property

6 Bedrooms, 6 baths, sleeps no more than 12

Large 6000 square foot living space in restored barn. If you like open, airy loft living, this is your property in the country. 2 large master bedrooms, one with Jacuzzi, 1 smaller bedroom and 3 unique bedroom/baths each located in a converted silo. Large kitchen with professional appliances, dining area, fireplace area, living room. 600 square foot deck overlooks a 24 acre private lake. Gunite pool. The property has many trails for hiking (including a walking trail steps from the house), and there is the opportunity (under a separate arrangement) to participate in a working cattle ranch featuring grass fed beef.

Located 5 miles from the Town of Litchfield, the property is in a very private area and is surrounded by 2000 protected acres of the Waterbury Water Company. Litchfield is a short (8-10 min) drive away and features numerous bars and restaurants, museums, nature preserves, antique shops, yoga studios and general sight seeing opportunities.

This is the perfect spot to go with family and friends to enjoy the country and bask in the outdoors or inside the spacious barn.

Although the barn sleeps 12 people, we are not looking to rent to a large group of unrelated people-ie a 'share' type situation or a party house. The person who is contracting to rent the property must be at least 27 years old.

The barn is located on a 700 acre estate/working farm. We raise grass fed beef, and pastured pork and poultry. For an additional fee, we can offer a farm experience depending on the season at an extra cost to be determined by the type of experience desired and the number of people involved. Meat is available for purchase down the road and there is a grill at the house.

There is air conditioning in 4 of the 6 bedrooms, and the other bedrooms remain cool most night and have fans. The slight elevation of the Litchfield Hills makes for cooler nights in the summer than other nearby areas, e.g. coastal Connecticut and New York. There is no air conditioning in the main living spaces of the house and we have never felt it necessary. For the occasional summer heat wave, there is a pool.

The house is also near the well-known Litchfield Daffodils, a twelve-acre planting of narcissus which bloom each Spring and attract admirers from near and far.

A note on Weddings & Parties:

We do not host outdoor parties or weddings in the backyard of this property. Small indoor gatherings are possible - please contact us for details.

If you are interested in an outdoor wedding or party, we have other locations nearby on the estate which are suitable for tents and outdoor events. There is a large field 1/4 mile away, which has electric and water, and there are several other spots around the estate which would be suitable for wedding photos or a small ceremony (e.g. the private lakes, additional fields, etc).

If you are interested in hosting a wedding or party, please note that we have a 1-week minimum rental from June 15-September 9. We would require you to purchase additional liability insurance (please contact us for details).

Spectacular setting, comfortable renovated barn suitable for family reunions

  • 4 of 5

3 generations of my family spent a week at Skyscape Barn at the very end of August. The charming town of Litchfield is just a few miles away and has everything you would need, but the barn and the expansive property around it feel very remote. It was so quiet at night we sat on the back deck and could hear nothing but ourselves. The main level of the barn is huge with multiple sitting areas so there was a lot of room to spread out. The six bedrooms include 2 large master suites and smaller rooms in 2 silos which gave the feeling of privacy even though we all felt very much together. The kitchen is well-appointed and roomy. It was a perfect setting for families that enjoy each other's company but also like some space of their own.

Huge space, full of charm

  • 5 of 5

We have been renting the barn for a few years now. We love the house and in particular the large space it offers and great comfort it offers , especially coming from New York and being a large group with several children. John, the owner is very accommodating and always ensure our stay is perfect, which we appreciate a lot each time we rent the house. Again thank you John!

Wonderful location with a unique character filled facility

  • 5 of 5

The clever conversion of two silos to 3 bedrooms with their own bathrooms is just part of the charm and character of this unique property.

The main barn/house is a spacious meeting dining space with sophisticated rustic charm. The glass walled/curtained end of the downstairs living room/dining area opens onto a big deck that faces out on the swimming pool, field, pond and sunset facing west view of the Litchfield hills.

This conversion was done a while ago so there is a weathered patina on the deck, some of the windows are balky and the big restaurant quality cook stove's pilot light is finicky but these were minor issues for us as the facility itself is well appointed and maintained by John, its owner, who made himself available and was attentive to our needs.

If you're looking for corporate event perfection this is not your choice. If you appreciate a family owned and maintained unique setting with character and charm this may exceed your expectations. For a group retreat/reunion or family vacation Skybarn checks all the boxes.

We were celebrating our 42nd college reunion and half of our group stayed at Skybarn with the other half at Smith Tavern down the road, also owned by John.

Skybarn was the perfect peaceful spacious setting for our group. The wifi facilitated Skyping in with west coast classmates who couldn't make it east for our gathering. The big kitchen cook stove and gas grill by the kitchen door allowed easy preparation of large group dinners.

My wife had a writers group gathering here last winter and suggested it as a perfect reunion location. She was right. :-)

We all agreed it was one of the nicest reunions we'd ever had.

A group of ten of us went up and had a terrific time. There is so much space for everyone to spread out, enjoying the deck and huge living room. We enjoyed walking around the pond and taking the canoe out for a glide. The bedrooms did the job, and the check in/check out procedures were very easy.

It was a surprisingly hot September weekend and we would have enjoyed taking a dip, but the pool filtration system was not working which was too bad. The sunsets were breathtaking - a perfect spot place to relax, enjoy good wine and good friends!

Owner's Response: the pool filtration was working, it's just that we lower the times it's on as we get into September. The water was perfectly OK for swimming. But in any case, I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves. Hope to see you again. John
