About the property

Villa Mitchell--3BR/2½BA

Classic Costa Rican construction with stucco walls, tile floors, beautiful tropical hardwood ceilings and doors, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Grounds include avocado, mango, papaya, and citrus trees with many tropical flowers. Howler monkeys, iguanas, and parrots frequent the area, as well as many other species of birds and beasts. The house is high enough to have a wonderful view, but is within walking distance of the beach, and the climb back up to the house will keep you in shape while you are away from the gym! Also, the soothing sound of the surf is like a lullaby. The house is comfortable with a well-equipped kitchen, large dining room, beautiful Costa Rican original art work, newly tiled pool overlooking the ocean, pit barbecue, a wonderful maid, and overall, beautiful surroundings. Also we now have new living room and TV room furniture. SKY TV and VCR/DVD, radio/CD/IPOD player, new TV, high speed Internet and wifi.

The kitchen has handmade tile, depicting designs of the local indigenous people, made by a renowned Costa Rican ceramic artist and her husband, a well-known American architectural ceramic artist. It also includes a toaster oven, microwave, gas stove, refrigerator, blender, and nice glasses and china. Pots and pans are adequate for most cooking needs. Telephone service is available with long distance available only with a telephone credit card. There is a washing machine and dryer, and the maid will wash anything you want. There is a wet bar in the living room with a small refrigerator. On the deck are two wooden tables with umbrellas and four wooden deck chairs with cushions. The house comes with all linens but you will need to bring shampoo, etc.

There is also a CD player/radio and satellite TV high speed Internet and wifi

Many excellent restaurants, the best sport fishing in Costa Rica, river float trips, surfing on a gorgeous beach, snorkeling at low tide, canopy tour, wonderful area for nature walks. Guatil, a historic village for ceramic work is only about an hours drive from the house where you can see artists at work and many interesting pieces both modern and indigenous. The Flying Crocodile is about a half hour from here where you can take breathtaking ultra light rides over the ocean and coastal mountains. The area is quiet and peaceful with not too much development. The road from Carrillo to Samara is paved which is a great improvement for travel although it is only three miles. Horses are available for rent from Luis Rodrigues--Celenia can contact him for you. Sea kayaking and float trips available from Popo's, owner Tad. A new zip line is available as well as the Flying Crocodile, an exciting ultralight ride.

Contact owners for specific info on sport fishing.

BR B Area: /B BR This is a beautiful, tropical area of the north coast of Costa Rica. About Kay Mitchell

We are a family from Pensacola, Florida who love our Costa Rican paradise. We have shared it with many people over the years, many of whom have come back every year or so and consider it their home as well. We are college professors, attorneys, farmers/ecologists, scientists, sailors, artists and people who love to have a good time.

Kay Mitchell purchased this house in 1993

Why Kay Mitchell chose Puerto Carrillo

Villa Mitchell and Playa Carrillo are both secluded non-touristy places which it make the home and the area a paradise away from the commercialism that has taken over much of Costa Rica. There is plenty to do there without condos and highrises! The most beautiful beaches in the world, clean water, wildlife, peace and serenity--also good places to eat, fish, swim, play.

What makes this house unique

Over the years we have improved the property, planted many trees and plants--mangoes, lemons, flowers etc--and restored the house along the way by adding new custom made Costa Rican furniture and Costa Rican artwork. We also have an excellent library from scientific books on plants and birds to the best novels as well as plenty of 'beach reads!' The view from the pool deck of the Pacific Ocean to unrivaled; sitting as the rail overlooking the ocean has become a daily and nightly place to be to relax and enjoy the view, the stars, the monkeys--you name it!

Guestbook comments from the owner

I've been trying compose this letter to you in my head even before we left

Costa Rica. I absolutely fell madly in love with your house. We could not

have chosen a house that would have fit our family better.

I applaud you both as it felt like home, not just a house, from the moment

we arrived.

I loved everything about it, the eclectic collection of dishes, the endless

drawers of utensils, the quality pots and pans, the well loved sheets and

quirky coverlets. We all loved the giant cupboard of towels of all size and

color and the perfectly placed bowl on the kitchen table where we always

threw our keys. I loved the great reads in the bookcase and found it

refreshing not to find the typical lusty romances. The King Arthur table

and chairs was perfect for playing games and family dinners. Carter, the

youngest, spotted right away the Mama Bear, Papa Bear and Baby bear leather

rockers in the front room. How fun to swim late night with bats swooping

down for insects underneath a dark sky full of stars. I just loved every

perfect and imperfect part of your home and cannot fully convey with words.

Absolute paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Had a great stay in your beautiful home and thoroughly enjoyed our time in Samara. One of the highlights was a cooking class we did at a local Costa Rica home in Samara learning to make the local food. Hoping to be back with our kids one day! Thank you for sharing your lovely and peaceful home.

Breath taking views and amazing wildlife from this worn-out (in need of maintenance) home

  • 2 of 5

We loved the view, the pool was very therapeutic, the location was perfect, the wildlife and insects were abundant and Isa (the house keeper) was supportive, thorough and on time. Long story short... there are multiple screens that had holes or hanging/broken screens- four days after reporting this (and the multiple reported insect invasion in the home) to Isa and Home owner- some of the screens were fixed, but not all! The owner (very responsive to emails) kept telling us “it’s a jungle”... “it’s CR”...”leave all lights off and doors/windows shut from dusk to dawn daily”...

The issue we had was there is no reason to have tarantula/s, a scorpion, poisonous spiders, centipedes, let alone all of the variation in ants... in the home while you are wanting to walk around indoors or sleep! Most of the exterior doors have huge (up to 2 inches) gaps between them and the floors, holes/broken screens, gaps in exterior walls and broken/missing/non-functioning window shutters. We booked this place for 9 days and ended up staying 4 nights there🤨? After the first two nights of no sleep, waking up with spiders/ants in the bed and a rash of unknown origin we stayed at other BNB (example...Sunset- right next door) & hotels atleast every other night to get sleep/rest. All of the other four places we stayed were absolutely bug free at night. Most of those places had air conditioning but all of them had no holes in screens, snug doors, working shutters and were routinely treated for insects. We would just sleep other places and go back to the house during day light hours.

With that being said we thought the Home could be amazing with routine upkeep and immediate repairs and treatments.

While we were at the house we were able to see howler and white face monkeys, iguanas, multiple birds, coates families and some of the most beautiful sunsets...

We would recommend this place, in the future, if you are open to be with all types of insects or if they put some deep TLC in it. Note- no working safe either.

We plan to go back to Costa Rica routinely... we have some amazing memories and love everything about there.

Owner's Response: I’m sorry but that is just not true. Two glowing reviews from the two previous renters should prove that. We had repairs done as soon as someone could come—2 days. We do not believe in using poisons to kill harmless insects. But the house is in the Jungle and open with screens. A few bugs are inevitable and it is Costa Rica. Be assured, no one else in 22 years has even mentioned insects as a problem! These folks were just paranoid about insects. The housekeeper thought they were crazy!’ Also, there is a family there now who has rented the house twice a year for several years and we have NEVER heard anything like this. The previous renters used every one of our good towels--that then had to be washed--to cover every window in the house at night. That is just crazy behavior. Our housekeeper and our accountant, who came over to see if there was a problem, both thought they were crazy. And I think the previous reviews show that it is truly a lovely place, not run down or dirty.

One of the Best Views in Carrillo!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Mitchell house for the first two weeks of February 2018. The house was spacious and very comfortable for five adults. We spent lots of time in and around the pool, enjoying the view and listening to the endless surf, howler monkeys and beautiful birds. At night the stars were spectacular..It was the perfect location form which to take advantage of all the activities, sites and sounds that Carrillo and Samara has to offer. We highly recommend this piece of Paradise in Costa Rica.

Spacious, comfortable, well equipped in the kitchen

  • 5 of 5

Love the open air and view from the pool deck. Spent plenty of time in the living room watching all the birds. Delightful to have regular house cleaning. Our fourth stay - that says it all.

A Wonderful Costa Rican Experience!

  • 4 of 5

The home was large and comfortable. The three bathrooms were appreciated by the seven of us. The location was the best. A one minute drive to Carrillo beach, or a five minute walk.

Just outside the house, we saw Howler monkeys, White Face Capuchin monkeys, a pair of Scarlet Macaws, and a Coati. Inside the house we found a Tarantula! We scooped him up and let him go, outside. The only downside is the ants were abundant in the kitchen, and not having air conditioning at night for sleeping. The ceiling fans were helpful. We loved the deep and shallow pool! Isa the housekeeper came every second day.

Stunning Location - Great for Families

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed at Villa Mitchell for 12 days over Christmas and it was perfect in every way. The location is unbeatable. Snuggled in the middle of the lush jungle hillside, the villa was comfortable and well equipped. The house is situated above the midway point of Playa Carillo so the views are sweeping and the pool area is sun drenched for the entire day. Even in the heat, the house stayed reasonably cool because of the open air layout.

The neighbouring house is visible through the kitchen window and one side of the dining room, but other than that, there is complete privacy.

One of the many highlights was New Years Eve. From our high vantage point, we were able to see the fireworks set off from Playa Samara, Carillo, Estrada and one beach south of Carillo. It was quite spectacular.

It was a memorable Christmas and I would definitely like to return for another stay.

Nearest Airport
72 Kilometres
Car: necessary

Playa Carrillo is located three miles south of Samara on one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. The beach is a huge horseshoe lined with coconut palms with a rocky headland on each end. There is no commercial development on the beach which adds to its natural beauty. It is in Guanacaste province on the northern Pacific coast in a area that so far is not overdeveloped and still retains the lovely natural beauty without condos and golf courses. You are sure to see parrots, howler monkeys, iguanas, frogs and many species of birds and other animals. It is the perfect place to relax, but there is plenty to do if you want to venture. There are horses, a zip line, surfing, swimming, snorkeling, fishing(some of the best sport fishing in Costa Rica) as well as short day charters that fish close to land. If you decide to rent out home, I will send you a detailed list of things to do and places to go.
