Alexander was born in the San Luis Valley in the Monteverde region and has lived all his life here. He started working when he was 11 years old helping his father herd oxen to take milk to the local cheese factory. At the age of 15, he began working for the Children´s Eternal Rain Forest, then he worked for InBio (Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad) researching snails all over Costa Rica, he then worked for ProNativas, an non-profit organization that promotes the use of native ornamental plants as a conservation effort. He believes in changing the world one person at a time, starting with ourselves.
Veronica was born in Mexico and spent 25 years in the States. She worked as a biologist, then as a licensed clinical social worker in various settings including private practice with people suffering from chronic physical illnesses and hospice care. She arrived in Monteverde a few years ago with her 5 year old son, Stuart. She founded PAWS costarica (Promotion of Animal Wellbeing Society), a non-profit organization to help educate people regarding the responsible and compassionate treatment of animals. She believes, like Alex, in changing the world from the inside (OUR inside) out. Everything we do, our choices and lifestyles sum up to our current state of affairs… we have the power to choose again so we can heal ourselves, our planet and all living beings.
Their work with their ecotourism business, their Sustainability Demonstration Center, and rural communities helps visitors understand the intimate connection that we have to the land. The entire community gets to benefit from the tourism that comes to this very rural area and get to share their own wisdom. Everyone wins.
Stuart is 12 years old and attends the public school in Guacimal. He shares our family dream of enjoying the simple things and having lots of fun playing soccer and bird-watching.
Our dream is to achieve sustainability in harmony with nature
veronica sheehan purchased this cabin in 2005
22 years ago, Alexander bought this land. It had been used for cattle and was pretty devoid of tress. He wanted to reforest it and turn it into a safe haven for birds and animals. He built the cabin 6 years ago. It is now a 5 acre paradise!
We love the peace and quiet, the sounds of the parrots flying overhead, and of the birds on the trees. We like having lots of space to roam and to plant things. Our animals are happy here too and we enjoy seeing them free and happy. We enjoy eating what we grow. We feel in harmony with nature. We are close to everything, but when we are home we have our privacy and space. There is enough peace that you can relax, renew and reconnect. Being here reminds one of who we truly are and why we are here.
We stayed for 3 nights and wish we had stayed the entire 9 nights we had in CR. Veronica was extremely accommodating with the warmest welcome after our long drive. We chose this place after reading it benefited the Sustainable Demonstration Center, as well as offering local homemade food from the neighbor Giselle and her family, which was amazing!! We could have stayed at the house all day with the beautiful views watching birds and monkeys but we did explore the wonderful town of Santa Elena and Selvatura Reserve. We have recommended this wonderful place to many friends and hope we can return again someday. It fills me with excitement to revisit this listing with the wonderful experience and memories it provided us. Thank you Veronica and family :)
This place is totally wonderful, remote yet accessible, with an utterly stunning view, everything you need and just fantastic people to rent from. You will not regret choosing this rental!!
We stayed at Casa Cielo for 2 nights--it was not enough time! Perched on a hillside with a magnificent view toward the gulf, this cabin feels like it's in it's own world. It's a unique location and a really special place--do yourself a favor and book a stay here!
On our way up, we stopped by the Sustainability Demonstration Center to meet Veronica, and would strongly encourage everyone to do the same--she's so wonderful and they're doing great work there! We also got to visit the farmers market across the street which was lovely. When we arrived at Casa Cielo, Giselle met us, showed us around, and provided delicious, farm-fresh, homemade refreshments! The cabin has everything you need, and is comfy and cozy. We had some dog and cat visitors, strays or neighbors but all very friendly, so that's a bonus if you love animals! The location is very convenient if you want to visit the cloud forest, and Veronica's recommendation/help with reservations at Selvatura Park was very valuable.
Can't say enough good things about this special place, and can't wait to go back! Very highly recommended!
We picked up the keys from Veronica at the Sustainability Demonstration Center, where she is doing so much good work for the environment and the local community. In fact the rental cost of the cabin goes directly to supporting the center. If you have time to let her show you around the center and explain the work she is doing, you wont be disappointed. The view from the cabin on the side of the hill are so expansive and the number of birds to see is incredible. Giselle's cooking is excellent and a great opportunity to take an evening away from domestic chores, support the local community and enjoy fresh ingredients and a home cooked meal delivered right to your kitchen table. 700 meters up the road is Finca Lindora where you must take the opportunity for only $35 to horseback ride through the hills to a private paradise of two natural rock pools built to capture hot spring water coming out of the hill and adjacent to a gushing stream of cold water. There's even a stone changing room. It was amazing, and totally private - just my husband and I and our 9-year old daughter. Horses are rock steady so no concerns for non-riders. We would definitely recommend for those wanting to get away from it all but yet be only a 10 minute drive to town (Santa Elena/Monteverde).
We stayed at Casa Cielo for 2 nights and wished we could have stayed longer. We first stopped at the sustainability center to meet Veronica and pick up the keys. Veronica warmly welcomed us, and told us about some of the environmental and human rights projects that she is passionately working on. It felt good knowing that the proceeds from the cabin rental were going towards her important work. The Saturday Market was on across the street, where we enjoyed local BBQ'd food and great live music. We were able to buy some fresh fruit and vegetables, and sweets for our stay at the cabin. Upon arrival, Giselle greeted us and had left a delicious warm snack on table for us. The cabin is on the side of a hill and the views are amazing! It is very clean and quaint, with everything we needed to cook our own meals. Perfect for a romantic get away. We put our compost out the kitchen window where the birds and other creatures could benefit from it. I liked that we were only a short drive away from Santa Elena and Monte Verde, but away from all the people in our private little cabin. Unfortunately we were so busy with all the activities you can do in the area that we didn't fully enjoy all that the cabin had to offer. We needed a few more days there. We will just have to come back some day to walk the trails and tour the farm, and especially to have Giselle cook for us. Veronica is a lovely person who is working hard for her community. Proceeds from the cabin rental go towards her work. I would highly recommend staying at Casa Cielo for a unique Costa Rican experience.
We had 5 wonderful nights at Casa Cielo. Veronica was extremely warm and welcoming when we stopped by her Sustainability Center on the way up the mountain. It was Saturday so we were able to shop at the local's market there and picked up some wonderful food for our stay. We were met by Giselle who showed us in and told us the basics of using the washer etc. The house is set on the side of the mountain and the large downstairs windows( which can open wide) look out on the most amazing vista all the way to the Gulf. The upstairs deck for sunsets was a highlight of every day. We were able to visit the Reserves around Santa Elena and then leave the crowds for our little quiet spot on the mountain. Hiking the trails below we'd see toucans and parrots flying by. We had a wonderful dinner brought to us by Giselle one night and hired Grevein, Veronica's brother-in -law, as our own personal guide one morning in the cloud forest. He was exceptional -- the best guide you could possibly be with. His incredible eyes and ears allowed us to see so much of that amazing place that we would have missed otherwise. We have great memories of the Monteverde area because of our stay at Casa Cielo.
Cloud forest preserves nearby, ziplines, birding tours, night hikes, world-famous Monteverde Cheese Factory, chocolate factory, butterfly, frog and orchid gardens. Horse back riding to hot springs 2 minutes away.
We conduct rural tourism tours.
A professional massage therapist will come onsite to do body work and facials.
Route 606 to Monteverde is being made wider and safer in preparation for paving it. The road has restricted access some times and this changes as the road work progresses. Please ask us for details.
