Why Rickie Hall chose Maine

Those who know Maine, know that the western Maine lakes and mountain regions are the best of Maine for skiers, hikers, snowmobilers, and for those who seek seclusion and a connection with nature. Dakota Bear Lodge is 10 minutes from Bridgton, a scenic, small town with an authentic Maine flavor. Western Maine offers hundreds of lakes and beaches, trails, and quiet roads for springs summer activities and ranges of mountains within a 45 minute radius to climb and ski for fall and winter activities.

What makes this lodge unique

You will never hear any sounds other than nature and what you play on the indoor outdoor music system. See Shawnee Peak to your north and the White Mountains to your west. Enjoy family and friends in front of the 25 ft. fieldstone fireplace or outside on the large patio around the fire pit. Hiking trails, snowmobile and biking trails border the property and skiing is just a few minutes away.

The Western Maine Mountains region spans most of Maine’s western border with New Hampshire. A small part of the scenic White Mountain National Forest is located in this area. This is essentially all of Oxford County and northern York County and Cumberland County. Notable towns include Bethel, Bridgton, Waterford, Sweden, Lovell, Naples, Albany, Oxford, Otisfield, Casco Rangeley, and Rumford. Many of the state's highest peaks are located in this region.

The area is known for its skiing, including Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, Sunday River in Bethel, Black Mountain in Rumford, Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley and Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley.

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes through this region, and the portion that passes through the region's Mahoosuc Notch is popularly considered by hikers to be the most difficult mile of the entire trail.

Western Maine is the land of hundreds of small and large lakes, rivers and streams makes Western Maine one of the most beautiful natural regions in New England. Recreational possibilities abound making this truly a four season opportunity to enjoy the awe-inspiring foliage views in the fall, skiing at one of the world renowned ski resorts in the winter and early spring to the hiking and fishing along wilderness trails in the clean refreshing air of a Western Maine summer. Boating, hiking, camping, golf, snowmobiling, you name it, it can be found in Western Maine.

Of course, if you're looking for something different to do, there are opportunities to enjoy llama trekking or digging in quarries for gemstones and minerals such as amethysts, tourmaline, garnet and topaz. You might even try your hand at panning for gold. The well-known Sebago-Long Lake area offers miles of boating and many lakefront activities including parasailing and windsailing. Sebago Lake may be Maine's second largest lake, but it has a small-time feel to it as there are numerous quiet inlets to explore. There are paddle boats and seaplane rides available at the Naples Causeway on Long Lake. The hand-operated Songo Locks, the only one remaining from 27 locks built in the 1830s, makes it possible to see the entire 42-mile waterway encompassing Sebago Lake, Songo River, Brandy Pond and Long Lake. The paddle wheeled Songo River Queen II is also a great way to see an upper portion of this waterway.

Phenomenal

We are a family of 12 and absolutely enjoyed every minute of it. The pictures don't do the real thing justice. A perfect getaway.

Absolutely perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

The pictures DO NOT do this amazing lodge justice. The view is absolutely spectacular. It feels like you have the entire mountain to yourself. The lodge is kept in pristine condition and literally has everything you could ever need or want to enjoy it. A group of us do a trip every summer in a new location and this was by far the most equipped lodge we have ever stayed in. We never wanted to leave and joked that we would just keep coming back here instead of finding new places. Rickie and her team are wonderful and quick to respond with any questions. I cannot recommend this place enough though I selfishly want to keep it to myself!

Awesome Family Vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

Just spend an amazing week at Dakota Bear Lodge. We were travelling with three young children and six adults and the lodge was perfect - well maintained, clean, spacious, and an amazing view from a huge back porch. The check-in/check-out process was easy and Rickie was a great resource through the whole process. I'd recommend this lodge to anyone!!!

An amazing escape from the city

  • 5 of 5

This is the 2nd year we stayed at the Dakota Lodge with 3 other families. The views are breath taking and serene and the house is peaceful. The house comfortably accommodates everyone and gives the grown ups some quiet while the kids play in the basement. There's plenty of skiing near by and a chance to relax for those not hitting the slopes. Rickie takes time to show you the ins and outs of the home and is always willing to help and answer questions. We've really enjoyed the trips and hope to keep them going!
