About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-7)

Located on the crest of Mount Kessler, surrounded by forty acres of wooded hills and pastures, and engulfed in a tranquil forest of maples and oaks, Deepwood House provides an ideal retreat for small groups, families or individuals who desire a unique, private, and relaxing place to stay while visiting Fayetteville.

The award-winning architectural masterpiece, constructed in the Ozark tradition of cedar wood, stone, and glass, was designed by the late former University of Arkansas Architecture professor Herb Fowler, who aptly christened it 'Deepwood'.

The home is fully furnished and equipped, with a master bedroom and bath and two guest bedrooms sharing a second bath. All the floors are natural flagstone, which beautifully complement a massive stone fireplace dominating a cozy living room. It has a spacious deck nestled in a mature maple forest with views down into Fayetteville and a huge stone patio for barbecuing and entertaining.

Deepwood House can accommodate up to six people, but day-use accommodations for more can be arranged. It is a great venue for weddings. Forest and meadow paths are available for those who like to walk, bike, or run.

Deepwood House is so close yet a world away.

Why Neil Norberg chose Fayetteville

Designed and built for his own family by architect and professor Herb Fowler in 1960, Deepwood has a rich history and was inspired by the 'built-in-nature' designs of mid-century architects such as Fay Jones and Frank Loyd Wright.

Relaxing wooded house!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd visit to the Deepwood house. It is a wonderful treasure just outside Fayetteville. Neil makes sure everything is perfect for the visit. Plenty of firewood ready! We love this wonderful house!

LOVE at first Sight!

  • 5 of 5

Our 25th Wedding Anniversary Celebration was a dream come true because of all of the grandeur and serenity at this beautiful place! Neil made us feel welcome with our first correspondence and right on through the day we departed. We loved that restaurants and sightseeing was close by yet we could escape back to the quiet at the end of the day!

This is a trip and stay we will mark down as one of our best!

Truly a unique treasure!

  • 5 of 5

We have rented many houses through VRBO before, but this was by far the most pleasurable renting experience! Neil was the most gracious host and so accommodating! We came to celebrate our son's graduation from UofA and had the most memorable weekend. We highly recommend this treasure deep in the woods, but so close to town. We can't wait to come back!

Perfect Get Away with easy access to civilization

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 3 thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. With many of the original furnishings and the mid-century design, you really get the feeling that you have taken a step back in time but with all the modern conveniences. The weather was unusually cold, but with the cozy fire to keep us warm and Neil's help restocking the wood pile, we sort of enjoyed the excuse to stay inside in the evenings and read, watch tv, play cards, etc. Neil was even kind enough to lend us a coat on the first day, since we were coming from 60+ degree Dallas and had forgotten to bring one. My only regret about the weather is that we didn't get to spend time on the deck or walking the property.

It is definitely secluded out here, and you feel like you are away from it all but you are just about 5 minutes from WalMart for groceries, and numerous chain restaurants, and only 10 to 15 minutes from downtown Fayetteville, and 35 minutes to Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville.

You will find everything you need here - paper towels, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, etc. so all you need to bring is any food and beverages you might want. The kitchen is well equipped with dishes, cookware, utensils and even some staples like cooking oil, salt, pepper, butter, etc. I did not see a wine opener but we always travel with a Swiss Army knife so we had one (and my guess is there is one somewhere, I just missed it).

We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

Beautiful retreat in the woods

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Deepwood for a women's weekend getaway and it was perfect! We are from Fayetteville, so it offered seclusion in the woods while still being about 20 minutes away from home (and 10 from the grocery!). The caretaker, Neil, could not have been more hospitable. He chopped firewood for the fireplace, offered to help carry bags in, and located a box of rice when one of us dropped a cell phone in the water. Talk about full-service!

The house has lots of history and charm and is located directly across from a Mt. Kessler trailhead that offered amazing views. We could not have been happier with our stay and plan to return in the future for some more R&R!
