About Jan

Family owned cottage near our childhood home. We looked after this cottage on behalf of other owners for many years and later bought it.

Jan purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Jan chose Port Stanton

This area is close to amenities, and well serviced, yet has a truly removed-from-it-all feel. Lots of great boating right at the dock. Sparrow Lake is only five minutes down stream. Georgian Bay, Lake Couchiching, and all the other great places on the Trent-Severn are close by. The Torrance Barrens is a 20-minute drive. The private Muskoka Wildlife Park is 10-minutes away. The cottage is about 100 years old and was originally on of several built along the river by a group of friends who all worked at Simpsons-Sears in downtown Toronto.

What makes this cottage unique

It's so wonderful to wake up in the morning and sit out on the porch and enjoy breakfast while looking over the river and the birds and wildlife. Later in the day we have a choice to go biking, hiking, or boating right from the cottage.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Jan's place is a historic cottage located on the river with all the amenities and enough space for an average to large family to function. excellent kitchen utilities, two dining areas, many places to sleep, and nice size dock and river facing yard. be warned that the train tracks are within hearing distance. walking distance to the marina and docks at the mouth of the river into Sparrow Lake. nice neighborhood to stroll through. cottage comes with as many fans, radios and other appliances necessary to make your stay comfortable. will book again in future, due to the nostalgic location for our family on the river.

Second visit to this cottage - and we'll go again!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is exactly what a cottage should be like - charming, comfortable and cozy with a beautiful view on the water. Having visited this cottage a couple of years ago, I specifically looked for the same property when my friends proposed a weekend away. With plenty of space for everyone to sleep, sit around and talk, enjoy quiet time apart or play board games around the dining room table - it was just what we were hoping for.

Meal time was easy as everything we needed for cooking was here. We were lucky enough to have great weather in October so that we could even enjoy a meal on the screened porch.

We'll be back again, I'm sure!

We really enjoyed our stay, beautiful location!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay, the location is beautiful and it was very helpful to be provided with all the information (FAQ sheet sent out prior to our stay). We had a 16' aluminum boat and it was great to have it parked right at the cottage and available the entire time. Also very nice to have the canoe provided, best way to see the canal!

Good choice!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this cottage for 2 weeks and we were very happy with it. It is a very old cottage, so you will get the real cottage experience. Of course it has all the amenities you will need though. I would have given a 4 star as we did have a little issue but Jan had it taken care of and all was good so I rated 5 star. The cottage is very comfortable and the location is fantastic.

Looking forward to coming back, hopefully next year.

Celebrating Canada's 150th birthday!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family rented this cottage the first week of July to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday. In total, we had 6 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs in our group. Although the cottage in some parts shows its age and could use some exterior maintenance, overall it was clean and cozy, had all of the needed amenities (linens, cleaning products, bbq, etc.) and it had just enough room for everyone in our group.

Jan the owner was easy to get in touch with and was able to answer all of our questions. On our first morning, the cottage coffee pot had a crack in it (oh no!!!!!), and I sent him a message to let him know, and he had it replaced by that afternoon. We really appreciated that, because drinking coffee every morning, sitting in the front porch as the sun filters through the tall trees is a must!! The screened in porch was also such a bonus for eating meals and playing cards, especially in the evening when the mosquitos were out. We really enjoyed sitting out on the front deck overlooking the water. The gate on the deck was helpful to keep the dogs and children safe. The dock was where we spent the early part of the day, as thats when the sun is there. We loved watching all of the big boats passing by, and jumping off the dock into the river. The water is clean and deep and very refreshing. The front lawn is perfect for lawn games, however with such high amounts of rainfall this spring, the ground was still very saturated, and the area where the fire-pit is was all muddy, because the tall trees on the property didn't allow the sun to dry it out. (I'm sure that this was not a problem later in the summer).

One thing that I wish we had brought was a boat. We were not able to explore the Trent Severn and Sparrow Lake from the water. As an alternative, we rented a boat in Gravenhurst (25 mins away), and spent the day exploring Lake Muskoka, and Port Carling. I would highly recommend bringing a boat, or renting one during your stay.

Overall, we had a marvelous stay at the is property and i would recommend it to others.

Beautiful view. Lots of boat traffic. Lots of surrounding noise. Cottage smelled musty.

  • 3 of 5

Outdoor view was beautiful. Loved the screened in porches! Fishing off the dock not great, and river was a bit quick for a row boat or canoe so I would recommend renting a boat, but be careful of wrekless boaters. We saw quite a few. Loud music at several surrounding cottages at night. Upon entry to the cottage there was a foul, musty smell. We got used to it, but upon reentry after being outdoors, it was definitely there. We would have liked to open more Windows but many of the screens had tears and there were quite a lot of bugs. Internet VERY slow even for use on low usage smartphones. The Owner is very nice and easy to get ahold of. We had a pretty nice time, just a few small things that we had expected to be a bit nicer based on reviews that we read.

Owner's Response: We checked in several times with Emily during her stay and she told us everything was fine and she was having a great time, so we were surprised by some things in her review. We, and a maintenance person, were both in the cottage less than an hour before her arrival and there was no smell. Nor was there any after her stay. The cottage is dry, has a new roof, and is well ventilated - it's two to three feet off the ground. It WAS the wettest spring on record this year, with rain almost every day for almost three months, so perhaps the surrounding vegetation smelled damp after that day’s rain. We asked the guests who stayed right after Emily if we could drop by to inspect and fix any screens immediately after seeing this review; and out of the ten window screens in the cottage, there was a rip in one, which we repaired. The river has an 8 kilometer speed limit and is policed so generally traffic is slow and quiet. Compared to being on a lake, the river is quieter because boats and jet skis cannot race around. The canal closes in late afternoon or early evening (no later than 7 each night) and traffic drops to nearly nil. The current in the river was faster than normal this spring because of the record high rainfall, but normally the current is mild. Even so, the current is not that fast. This is a great opportunity for us to remind everyone spring in Muskoka is always subject to weather and there can be LOTS of mosquitoes and black flies. Our two screened porches are a wonderful way to avoid them and enjoy the outdoors, but if you go right outside in spring you WILL NEED BUG SPRAY or long pants and sleeves ESPECIALLY. This can also be true on a wet day in the summer. The cottage is very quiet, we always have wonderful sleeps there. Noise has never been an issue, as our neighbors are all seniors within two houses each side - and across the river. There is a noise by-law in Gravenhurst and Severn and the Ontario Provincial Police will attend if loud noise continues after hours. But this has never been necessary.

Excellent weekend on the Severn River!

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed our weekend get away at the cottage. Was comfortable and spacious for 8. The main reason for the stay was fishing and the best spot we found was literally 100 feet from the dock. This is a very convenient location.
