About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

This North Higashiyama house is a classically beautiful Machiya town-house in the perfect location for anyone visiting the Ancient Capital, Kyoto. This recently and lovingly restored traditional Machiya Town House is located on a quiet narrow cobblestone lane just 20 meters off the Sakura tree lined Shirakawa canal in the historic Higashiyama area. It is a truly classic, old style Japanese neighborhood of old wooden houses, family run restaurants and shops, temples, shrines and historic sites. It retains its traditional flavor and is blessed with proximity to the green hills and peaceful waterways which grace the eastern sector of Kyoto. Women in Kimono and monks from nearby temples chanting for alms are still common sights in the narrow lanes of Higashiyama. This special area still retains a 'village' feel though only a ten minute walk from downtown and on the edge of the historic district of Gion.

A five minute stroll up the canal will bring you to the Museum district and Heian Shrine. A quiet and lovely ten minute walk down the canal finds you in the center of Gion, the historic entertainment quarter where Geisha and Maiko pass in the evenings. The hiking trails of the eastern mountains begin and end just minutes from your door and a full array of fine dining and drinking establishments are within easy walking distance. The Higashiyama subway station is just four minutes away and conveniently and quickly connects you to further sights as well as Kyoto train station and Kansai Airport.

Many of Kyoto's most famous temples, shrines and historic sites are also nearby. There is also a convenience store and several supermarkets, including one of Kyoto's oldest 'shopping streets' a short walk from the house. For those interested in learning more about Japanese food, there are a few half day courses in Japanese cooking in Kyoto and the house's kitchen is fully equipped with what you need to practice what you've learned.

The restoration of this house was completed in February of 2010. The house retains its original traditional beauty while being discreetly fitted with modern western amenities in the kitchen, toilet and bath. Guests sleep on double thickness futons and all linens and towels are provided. The house is furnished with period antiques and textiles and a lovely Japanese garden in the back of the house. This combined with its beauty and location make it the ideal site for your stay in Kyoto.

Start and finish your days of sightseeing within the quiet refined charm of this classic period Japanese home. A stay in this lovely house will add greatly to your appreciation of this amazing city.

We look forward to greeting you at Your Home In Kyoto.

About David

David is an over 20 year resident of Kyoto. He has worked on Cruise Ships, in Ski Resorts and for the Hyatt Regency and is presently a professor of English at a Japanese University. Yoshiko has lived her entire life in Kyoto. She formerly worked in the Kimono industry and is an avid photographer.

David purchased this house in 2010

Why David chose Horiikecho

After more than 20 years living in a number of different parts of Kyoto, Yoshiko and I have found the Higashiyama area to be our home. It is a truly classic old style Japanese neighborhood of old wooden houses, family run restaurants and shops, temples, shrines and historic sites. It retains its traditional flavor and is blessed with proximity to the green hills and peaceful waterways which grace the eastern sector of Kyoto. Women in Kimono and monks from nearby temples chanting for alms are still common sights in the narrow lanes of Higashiyama. We have tried to make the house a part of this serene and traditional area and hope to share its unique beauty with our guests.

What makes this house unique

After many years living in the Higashiyama district, Yoshiko and I were very fortunate to find this beautiful house, just around the corner from us. The restoration was done by local traditional craftsmen, temple carpenters and an architect experienced in seamlessly and discreetly blending traditional style with modern amenities. Yoshiko and I have decorated the house with the best from our over 20 years of collecting at Kyoto's temple antiques markets. As we are living just one minute away, one or both of us is always available should you have any questions or requests. A comprehensive and updated guide to restaurants in the area is provided in the house and we are happy to make reservations for you. This house is our only rental property, so all our attention and care are reserved for the house and our guests. The unique and serene beauty of the house and its location, combined with personal attention when requested, make this classic house, the ideal choice for your visit to this lovely city.

Though located close to the heart of the town and many historical sites, Koto Inn is situated on a incredibly quiet stone lane in a very traditional old neighborhood. Many guests comment that it is so amazingly quiet and serene and that they have never slept so well. Often, guests will spend a whole day in the classic atmosphere of the house, looking out on the serene garden, a cup of tea and a book from the house library, only venturing out for exquisite meals nearby. A true taste of classic, traditional Kyoto.

** Do NOT Miss the Opportunity to Stay Here ** You Will DEFINITELY Want at LEAST 4 Nights

  • 5 of 5

No words can adequately describe how INCREDIBLE this HOME is, nor how WONDERFUL the HOSTS are, or how PERFECTLY SITUATED the LOCATION is. We've been back home for almost 2 weeks now and have taken so long to write a review because we wanted to get it "just right". But honestly -- we cannot.

If you read the VRBO description plus all, most or even just SOME of the reviews for this property, you will get an accurate description of the "details". Instead of repeating the same things, I will try to focus on just the overall "feel" of our time at the Koto In.

If you want to experience what living in Kyoto was like in the 1800's -but with modern conveniences like indoor plumbing and a kitchen - you MUST stay here: Beautiful, Peaceful, Elegant, Historical, Quiet, Convenient, Private.... PERFECT. IN. EVERY. WAY. We have travelled all over with VRBO: Hawaii, Ireland, Japan and have been blessed with incredible hosts every time... But I must say that hands down David and Yoshiko are the BEST among a 5-star group of hosts that we have experienced. From the moment we made a simple inquiry about possibly staying at their property up until the day we checked-out they communicated with thorough and detailed emails. They lived nearby and were easily available if we needed them throughout our stay and that was really helpful, especially being in a place where we didn't speak the language. David and Yoshiko go out of their way to meet you upon your arrival so that they can show you exactly where the home is and then walk you through all the important details of how things work and answer any last minute questions, etc. Everything you could possibly need is provided... from coffee and teas to books, magazines and games. Yoshiko even created a detailed restaurant review binder with ratings, menus and hours of operation. Their attention to detail is impeccable.

YOU WILL WANT TO STAY AT LEAST 4 DAYS, and one of those days you will want to JUST hang out in home to enjoy it completely. (Now this is totally not traditional at all, but one of my highlights was the talking bathtub that filled and emptied automatically and kept your bath water at what ever temperature you set it to. After 13 days of constant walking and activity throughout Japan... ending it with that was..... AHHHH BLISS.

You will NOT regret a stay here. Your only regret will be not staying long enough.

God-Willing... We WILL be BACK :) ~Gordie, Helena & Alex

We felt in love with this house, a couple of minute walk from metro station in a quiet old traditional Kyoto, walking distance from Gion.

The property seems to be brand new even if is 130 years old, everything is perfect, you can feel to be a Kyoto citizen!!

Owners are really friendly and careful of your staying

Definitely the best place we stayed in years of travelling

Kids are welcome and ours cryed wen we had to left.

Beautiful little townhouse in the heart of Kyoto. With all the necessities for ourselves and our teenage children. Lovely hosts who have put a lot of love and care into maintaining this property for others to enjoy.

Amazing home, fantastic area, wonderful owners

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just returned from Kyoto, where we stayed at the Koto Inn for 4 nights. It was a truly remarkable and wonderful experience. From the first inquiry we made to the property owners (David and Yoshiko) months before our trip (we do not speak Japanese, but they do), to the time we checked out and left the Koto Inn, we could not have been happier. The property is an immaculately remodeled machiya (much of the remodeling work performed by temple artisans), yet has modern appliances. It was so nice to be able to wash our clothes halfway through our trip (allowing us to pack lightly). The bathroom and tub are awesome, the tatami living space and dining room are lovely, and the whole house is beautifully curated. To top it off, the flowers in the small garden were in full bloom. It was perfect.

David and Yoshiko were very helpful in giving recommendations, and are both extremely charming people. If you are flying from Osaka or Tokyo, the Shinkansens (bullet trains) make this property extremely convenient (if you have an afternoon flight out of Haneda Airport, you could easily leave in the morning from Kyoto). If you have not been to Kyoto, you should definitely visit (it is now one of our favorite places on Earth). If you visit, we highly, highly recommend the Koto Inn.

Historic Home in a Great Location

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful restored home in the heart of Kyoto. This home allowed us to really feel the traditional vibe of Kyoto. We were able to take advantage of its great location to walk to many sites. Home had great amenities including cooking utensils, fridge, laundry, etc. which was welcome after travelling for several weeks. Highly recommend.

Koto Inn

  • 4 of 5

A short walk off the traffic corridor in North Higashiyama, following the pedestrian walkways, leads to this very well rebuilt Machiya. The facility accommodated our group of four quite well. The careful care from David and Yoshiko was evident in the furnishings and the literature. Carefully placed art was a delight. We arrived at an ungodly hour, many thanks to David and Yoshiko for the warm welcome for these weary travelers. In February the temperatures are a challenge for the systems to keep up with, any other time of year they should be fine. Having a well stocked kitchen with utensils is a real plus, as we could "breakfast in" then get to the sites.

The location, walking distance to the subway, buses, museums, coffee shops and Beer Komachi (shameless plug) was indispensable. The post office ATM as well.

Our travels used all public systems and walking, we will go back and use bikes as well on the next trip.

We enjoyed the local Sushi place around the corner, walking along the canal. The proximity to Shoren- In, Chion-in, walking to Chion District and the museums made this an easy choice. Our 9 days experience at the facility was top notch and worth a re-visit.

Thanks to our gracious hosts
