Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-4)

In the spring of 2010 Martinez Casita opened also for short term rentals. Conveniently located next to Barranca Plaza Casita, a favorite of many Ghost Ranch visitors for the last 7 years!

Barranca is an old Hispanic hamlet just west of Abiquiu above the Chama River. On its small plaza there are a few adobe houses, one of which is this very charming one bedroom, one bath vacation home.

The thick adobe walls have built-in banco's in the living area. Throughout the casita are tiled and wooden floors. A woodstove gives you great comfort in the winter. The thick walls keeps the house cool in the summer.

A large garden with fruit trees surrounds the casita.

In Barranca you will find a lively creek coming from the mountains. Follow the spring-fed creek up-stream and enter the Santa Fe National Forest with sensational views of the Abiquiu valley and the surrounding mountain lands. Badlands with goblin-like formations are nearby. The Chama River, along which are cattle ranches, is great for fishing.

The casita is just minutes from Georgia O'Keeffe's home and a short drive from the Piedra Lumbre basin. Ghost Ranch is worth many visits and don't forget to drive out into the Chama River canyon to hike or visit the Benedictine Monastery. The Chama River Wilderness is paradise for explorers.

The acequia, the traditional Hispanic community water system, is still held in high regard in Barranca. The mayordomo decides who irrigates when. The casita’s garden can be irrigated on Saturdays.

Great day trips can be made to Ojo Caliente Mineral Hot Springs, Taos en Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Chama (with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad), Bandelier National Monument, Chaco Culture National Historic Park, Valle Grande, etc. etc.

Family gatherings and reunions:

Both Martinez Casita and Barranca Plaza Casita offer full privacy. Yet since the casitas are sitting together on one end of Barranca Plaza, they form an ideal gathering place for groups of eight family members or old school friends. BBQ facilities are provided and there are great shadowy spots to linger under the trees. Special rates are available when both casitas are rented.

Comfy accommodations in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a really enjoyable stay at this Abiqui casita. The Martinez family is most welcoming and the casita is very pleasant, well maintained, and right in the midst of some amazing hiking. We loved being so close to Phantom Ranch, Abiqui Lake and other outdoor recreation areas, and to see Georgia O'Keeffe's home was a real treat. At the end of each day, we returned home and watched the sun going down from our screened porch - and we appreciated the opportunity to pick tomatoes and peppers from the Martinez garden to accompany salad at dinner. Thank you for a delightful long weekend. We look forward to returning and continuing to explore the area.

Very charming and we'll kept property. It had everything we needed for a relaxing stay.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in the Martinez Casita very much. The Abiquiu region is very beautiful and a perfect spot to stay and take numerous day trips. The Martinez family are very gracious hosts and it was a pleasure speaking with Ninfa to learn more about the history of the Casita and the area. We would love to stay again when we return to New Mexico. It's never a matter of "if", but "when" we return to this beautiful state. Many thanks for providing such a wonderful home away from home.

Perfect accommodations!

  • 5 of 5

The Martinez Casita was the perfect place for us to stay while visiting Abiquiu. It was convenient, spacious, cozy and quiet. The Martinez family were terrific hosts, offering ideas for things to do, see and places to eat, along with stories about the area. Thank you Floyd and Ninfa for making us feel so welcome. We plan to come back!

Very nice place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Casita was exactly as described. Central location made it easy to get to many sites. Kitchen is fully stocked and easy to use. I didn’t realize how well the adobe kept in the heat at night - nice and warm.

A Taste of Quiet, Rural New Mexico

  • 5 of 5

What a pleasure to wind down and experience the area that once was home to artist Georgia O’Keeffe. The owners / hosts are a family that have lived here a long time and they have been friendly and welcoming to us. Situated in the rural, rustic community of Barranca, our casita was roomy and had everything we needed, including wi-fi. The large kitchen was well equipped and we made 2 dinners for ourselves as well as our coffee in the mornings. One really great thing was instant hot water...we never had to wait for the sinks or shower to warm up! Overall the place was very clean and the queen bed was very comfortable. The unique beauty of Northern New Mexico is right here: the Ghost Ranch Conference Center and its museums are only a 20 minute drive from here, and the landscape along Highway 84 is stunning. For food and supplies, Bode’s General Store is just a couple of minutes away in Abiquiu, though we brought most of our groceries along with us from Santa Fe for our 3 night stay. We will definitely be back as soon as we can!
