Rock of Ages has been sitting on the shores of Lake Erie since 1861. It is built of native, local limestone, and is listed on the National Historic Register. There simply is not another comparable home on Lake Erie. It is wonderfully unique and fun to explore. It is very solid (like a 'Rock') and in great shape, but we have renovated the first floor, creating a new Great Room and state of the art kitchen with everything needed to cook for and dine 30+ guests.

Rock of Ages overlooks the Lake Erie islands and is in the quaint village of Marblehead and is only a hop, skip, and a jump from the east gate of Lakeside (The Chautauqua of Lake Erie) in one direction and the historic Marblehead lighthouse in the other. The lighthouse is a spot of natural beauty and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes.

We have traveled around the world and this is our favorite place on earth! Friendly, down-home people, great entertainment (at Lakeside and the islands), wonderful local history, great boating and fishing, Cedar Point, and the waves and the winds of Lake Erie, are constantly there. What a place! From Rock of Ages'tower room is one of the best views of Lake Erie in the area. Come and see!

Rock of Ages has a 120-foot spacious lakefront patio and three other patios with plenty of furniture for sunbathing, eating and gazing at the lake and watching the boats and ferry to Kelley's island. Of course, you can swim off the flat glacial rocks right in front of the house. A large sandy beach is a short drive away. We still have the original limestone fossil walkways from when 'The Rock' was first built. There is a large hot tub overlooking the lake.

We have plenty of room for the whole family (7000+sq.ft.) and lots of bed and bath options. There is a first-floor suite with a king bed and its' own bath for those who do not do stairs. On the second floor each of the five bedrooms has a king-size bed and a private bath. The third floor is great for kids. Six bedrooms surround a large common area with a large-screen TV.

There is one king bed, one queen bed, 5 full-size beds, 3 twins and 4 rollaways up there. The third floor bedrooms share a fullsize bath and two half baths. You have already heard about the view from the tower room! It has a kingsize bed, its' own bath, and a roof-top patio. Folks will fight over who gets to sleep there!

On the first floor as well as the kitchen and dining/great room, there is a living room with TV and computer with internet access. The first floor also has two half baths. The lower level - not really a basement (it was the old summer kitchen) is a large game room area with a pool table, pingpong table, TV, half bath, and tables and chairs. There is a backyard patio with two large grills. Rock of Ages has a large parking area to accommodate big groups.

Although it is wonderful in the summer with the windows open and the lake breezes, we do have air conditioning. Rock of Ages can be used year round and the lake in all its glory in the winter with ice and snow is something else!! It is a great place for business or church groups or special interest retreats and seminars, for example birders or artists.

Our rates are for the entire property, not per person as in an inn or bed and breakfast. Our kitchen can easily handle the needs of a catered event or a weekend getaway. We can put you in touch with a couple of local catering companies just around the corner from Rock of Ages who have catered a number of groups staying at Rock of Ages. They can cook for you all week,or just do a special meal indoors or outdoors.

Wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at Rock of Ages three times with a group of 10 women! It is a wonder place to stay. Large enough for the whole group, yet cozy corners to get away from it all. The kitchen is large and great to work in. The view of the lake from almost all the windows is an added bonus! If the weather is nice, you can walk right up town to all the shops and places to eat. I can not say enough good things about this place!

Family Gathering

  • 5 of 5

We spent a great week at Rock of Ages with our family of 31 - my mom, her 7 kids and significant others and her 18 grandchildren. We loved the location and made the most of the yard for volleyball, the lake for swimming, paddle boarding, jet skiing and boating and were able to walk to the Kelleys Island ferry, Marblehead light house and the local winery. The kitchen was well stocked for preparing meals for our large group. The rooms were comfortable and linens and towels plentiful. All in all it was a wonderful week and we are already booked to come back in 2019! Thanks!!!

Great for reunions

  • 5 of 5

We had a three-generation family reunion with 28 people at Rock of Ages in late June. The location is beautiful, especially the great seating on the waterfront; the area is wonderful (we loved the Chatauqua at Lakeside, right next door). The kitchen is fantastic for cooking meals for 30+ people and the dining area is also great for big, group meals. I couldn't believe it, but we never ran out of dishes. There's a big difference in comfort between the bedrooms on the third floor (the former servants quarters?) and the rest of the house. Adult couples who were assigned to third-floor rooms complained (beds too small, not enough natural light, cramped space, only two showers for the whole floor), so I would recommend only putting children or teens up there. The 5 rooms on the second floor, the "suite" on the ground floor, and the tower room are all fabulous for couples. Also, we have two mobility-impaired seniors who had trouble getting into and out of the house via the steep old stairs in front and back, and only one of them was able to have a first-floor bedroom, as all the rest are upstairs. There were good grab bars in the bathrooms, though. Overall, the family loved it, and the people who were in the nicer rooms kept raving about how great the house was. The owners were super-friendly and responsive, taking care of a few maintenance issues we identified in the first couple of days. We would certainly go back.

Owner's Response: Loved having your family at Rock of Ages! Our dear old 156 year old house does have it's quirks! The six bedrooms and the common room on the third floor are as the house was originally built. We have added one full bathroom and two half baths to the third floor. One of the third floor bedrooms has a king bed, the rest have queens, doubles or twins. All are normal modern sized beds with very comfortable mattresses. The other seven bedrooms in the house have king beds and private baths. Rock of Ages is our vacation home and is not a hotel, inn, or bed and breakfast. It is not handicap accessible and we try and make that very clear to people if we know that is something they are looking for. It is a very unique historical property and we walk a fine line between keeping some of the original character while still making it comfortable and welcoming for our family and many guests.

family reunion

  • 5 of 5

Rock of Ages (the stone house) was absolutely perfect for our family reunion. With 14 siblings (& spouses) it is extremely difficult (if not impossible) to find accommodation for all of us under one roof so this was a huge plus. Also, Marla had THE best stocked house we have ever rented...she thought of everything & had plenty of it! Everyone (even the picky ones) commented on the lovely linens and the super comfortable beds. Could not have been happier with our stay and would love to go back someday :)

Top Notch!

  • 5 of 5

Our church staff of 9 stayed at Rock of Ages Feb. 21-23. We had amazing weather for February and were able to enjoy the our door seating, walked to a nice cafe in town. Great location.

The rental home was stocked with EVERYTHING! I've never stayed at a rent home that kept up on the dishes, utensils, paper towel, trash bags, etc. this is a top notch place!

Almost every room as its own bathroom. The view was amazing! The owners and staff were very good to work with. I would highly recommend this place.

Friends winter weekend getaway!!! A 150 year old house that's always fresh and clean!!!

  • 5 of 5

Even though the Rock of Ages is over 150 years old, Marla keeps this huge house updated, fresh, and clean every time! Our group of friends, some couples, some singles, have been making this our go to place for our winter weekend getaway nine years in a row! We wouldn't even consider going anywhere else because nothing could compare. We each have our own master bedrooms each with attached baths, a huge, extremely well stocked kitchen, several separate sitting areas for all of us or some, new reclining leather chairs overlooking the beautiful lake, a fireplace, and much, much more!

Our weekend usually starts on Friday at 1:00, when we meet for lunch in Port Clinton. We all can't wait until we get to the house and draw our room numbers! We're always excited to see what is "new" in the house. Sometimes it's new bed linens and comforters, new chairs, new dishes, new curtains, and most exciting- the new blue tiled main floor powder room(beautiful),whatever it is, it is the best kept house we've ever rented(and we go away a lot) (and we're pretty picky!). Friday night is filled with drinks and appetizers that we bring and share. Saturday morning starts with homemade waffles, fresh fruit, eggs, and bloody mary's! We then take an hour long walk along the lake-snow and cold will not keep us down! This year, we were thrilled to see a new winery right at the end of our street on Clements. A few of the shops on the main street are open in the winter and we like to browse. Saturday night is filled with games and music and lots of talk! Us girls even dance like we were in high school(the floor in front of the fireplace is as big as a dance floor and by the way, we're all in our 50's and 60's)! Saturday night, my husband makes us all a beautiful dinner of beef tenderloin with all the fixings. There is nothing lacking in the kitchen as far as utensils and cooking items. Sunday is sad as we all go our separate ways, but we know we have year TEN to look forward to!!!
