Read more about the Loire Valley Region which you can easily visit when staying at Launay Castle.

The Castle Grounds and Gardens

The property includes beautiful tree-lined paths, an orchard and a one and a half-acre pond.

The château is surrounded by a picturesque moat.

Romantic History: The Château de Launay is also the home of a romantic story that involved the Seigneur de Luce, Charles de Coesmes and Gabrielle d'Harcourt. Their marriage in 1523 was initially disapproved by François 1er following the abduction of Gabrielle by Charles de Coesmes, who was aided by Pierre de Bernay, Seigneur de Launay.

The couple took refuge at Château de Launay and subsequent events are known in great detail including quotes from the angry mother trying to fetch her daughter at night.

But by 1527, because of services rendered by the seigneur and some say because of Gabrielle's remarkable beauty, the couple often joined the court of François 1er at Amboise and Chambord.

Later the chatellenie de Luce was changed into a barony.

Château de Launay is located in the Pays de la Loire region, within easy walking distance to the quaint village of Lombron, which has its own bakery, butcher, café-restaurant and pharmacy.

Château de Launay is ideally located for innumerable interesting day excursions.

-You will be able to explore the many castles of the Loire Valley and return to the castle each night.

-Saumur, Vouvray, Jasnieres and Côteaux du Loir are some of the region's wine specialties that can be tasted at many of the area's wine cellars.

-Paris is a 2-hour drive by car or just 55 minutes on the TGV (high-speed train) from Le Mans.

-Brittany and Normandy are both within easy reach of the castle.

The Château de Launay is a short 20-minute drive from Le Mans.

For the automobile enthusiasts, a stay at the Château de Launay around the second weekend of June each year is a must to witness the 24 hours of Le Mans, the world's most celebrated motoring event.

The old town of Le Mans and its beautiful medieval historic quarter is one of the preferred medieval and renaissance locations.

It is also one of the most filmed in many French movies, including Cyrano de Bergerac which shows the old town extensively.

Horseback riding for all levels of competency, including youngsters, is available within 2 kilometers at the outskirt of the village and some of the riding trails border the property of the chateau.

Notes:
A stone bridge crosses the moat which encircles an old stable, a pigeonnier and a square tower. Pastoral views of the moat and pond can be enjoyed from the very large tiled terrace. The narrow peninsula between the moat and the pond is an especially pleasant place to relax. The pond teems with fish and hosts an interesting variety of waterfowl. The grounds also include well-manicured paths bordered by fragrant linden trees and an orchard composed of several kinds of fruit trees. Beautiful landscaping surrounds the swimming pool. Trails on the property traverse grazing fields and wooded areas and join other well-marked lanes and trails in the surrounding countryside. A professional gardener maintains the property. Castle History: The Château de Launay is an historic 15th and 18th century castle, which has been thoroughly restored. Its renaissance architecture is typical of many châteaux of the Loire region. It is also know as the Château de la Grande Maison

Superbe

  • 5 of 5

Do not hesitate to book your next holiday in this chateau. It really is superb in every way, from the spacious bedrooms and newly renovated bathrooms to the splendid 'grand salon'. Annette served us an excellent continental breakfast every day and was both helpful and efficient throughout our stay. If you really want to finish with a flourish, call in M. Barbotin , a 5 star chef from Le Mans, to cater for your final dinner. Our large family usually get together in a different location every two years but there is only one place we are going to next time - the 'Chateau du Launay'.

Lifetime memories

  • 5 of 5

The Fairy Tale Castle met all our expectations and then some! We were a family, ages 1 to 76, and the Castle was perfect for all of us. The children as well as the adults loved the pool and all of us have special memories of our time on the alfresco-- just like a scene right from the movies. We had two meals prepared and delivered by a local couple, Nadine and Jack, which were absolutely wonderful, high quality, and more than generous in portions. Annette, the housekeeper, took very good care of us, even when some of us could not speak French (sign language always works). All of us would highly recommend the castle, the owner, and her help while planning your trip and working with HomeAway. Our family was able to build lasting memories and celebrate the life of husband, father, and grandfather. Thank you.

Excellent chill In Faubert country!

  • 5 of 5

Excellent chill in a comfortable chateau where history seeps from the walls and local village is timeless. After the hustle and bustle of London, a country life called for late mornings, long walks and feeding ducks and swans. Wonderful staff, too. See you soon.

Beyond Belief

  • 5 of 5

This place was more than I expected. The location was perfect, the grounds were amazing and the house itself was beyond belief. Very comfortable for a place so large. Annette was wonderful and was more than willing to help our group with anything we needed. I would recommend this vacation to anyone looking for a one in a life time experience!

We all had a delightful time.

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Launay was a delight.

The chateau, its grounds and the area proved to be all we had hoped:

Lombron and the chateau were easy to reach from Calais, easy to find, easy to gain access to, easy for all to park.

The rooms were very clean and tidy.

The public rooms provided all we wanted, we comfortably sat 17 down to evening dinner, and breakfast was a pleasure too (courtesy of the wonderful Annette).

The drawing room also accommodated us all superbly after dinner for games, quizzes and conversation; being able to light the log fire was a nightly bonus and delight.

The bedrooms were admired and appreciated by all, especially with their outlooks and ensuite facilities (one of our reasons for selection).

The grounds were super and we were able to play rounders and French Cricket and stroll, and fish.

We were able to sit outside on the terrace in the early evenings and chat.

We were able to find lots of local walks and cycles as well as travelling further afield.

As you know, we had brothers, sisters-in-law, sons & daughters, nieces & nephews & partners all together and the chateau and its grounds gave our party the chance to spend a lovely week together in a way that would not otherwise have been possible; the fact that it was all we hoped it would be was the icing on the cake.

And you were able to rustle up excellent weather too! Thankyou.

This is a spectacular chateau and property

  • 5 of 5

Our group had such a wonderful time at this chateau. The owners were very gracious and professional in the rental process and also in making sure that we were enjoying our stay.

Our housekeeper Annette was the sweetest woman, and was very hard-working and efficient. She made sure we had our breakfast every morning and kept the house running beautifully.

The chateau is beautifully and tastefully decorated, with very comfortable rooms. It was convenient having en suite bathrooms.

The property was just made for strolling and enjoying the moat, lake, fields, woods and pastures next door which contain horses and donkeys.

For entertainment there is also a pool and a small building containing a game room and bicycles.

Within walking distance is the picturesque village of Lombron. There is a charcuterie and patisserie where you can buy delicious food.

This was a very memorable stay and I highly recommend this property.
